A European-marque specialty shop in Marion asked us a question we hear constantly: is buying a used car lift automotive setup really a bad idea, or is that just what dealers want us to think? The shop had built its reputation on wheel bearing service for premium European vehicles — precise work, high-value cars, techs who cared about millimeter tolerances. They were expanding to a third bay and had gotten a great price on a ten-year-old two-post from an auction. Something felt off, so they called us before signing. What followed was an honest conversation that busted several myths on both sides — some of them ours. This article shares the myth-by-myth walkthrough we did with their owner.

Myth 1: Used Is Always a Bad Idea

This is the myth most new-lift sellers push and it is not honest. A used car lift automotive setup can be a fine purchase — under specific conditions. If the lift is from a known brand with a documented service history, if the cables and hoses were replaced within the last three years, if the anchors have been re-torqued regularly, and if the previous owner can show you the log, then a ten-year-old commercial two-post has plenty of runway left. We have installed used lifts for customers when the math worked.

Where the used-is-fine story breaks down is when any one of those conditions is missing. No service history? Assume nothing was maintained. Unknown brand? Parts pipeline risk. No anchor log? You are inheriting a slab you cannot verify. In the Marion shop’s case, the auction lift had none of that documentation. The seller was liquidating equipment from a shop that had closed, and the previous owner was unreachable. That was the deal-breaker. Not the age of the car lift automotive product itself — the missing documentation. When we walked the customer through it, he agreed. He bought new instead, and we credited him a small amount toward the install for taking our honest advice over the auction bargain.

Myth 2: New Lifts Do Not Need the Same Diligence

The counter-myth is also wrong. Buying new does not exempt you from due diligence. A brand-new car lift automotive shipped from a warehouse still has to be inspected on arrival, installed by a qualified installer, anchored to a slab that meets spec, and cycled through a first-day acceptance test. We have seen new lifts arrive with shipping damage that the buyer did not catch until install day, and by then the return process is expensive. On every new install we do an uncrating walkthrough before we torque anything.

The other new-lift myth is that the manufacturer’s warranty protects you from everything. It does not. Manufacturer warranties typically cover manufacturing defects for a defined period on major components. They do not cover installer errors, slab problems, unauthorized service, or normal wear items. Your installer relationship is what fills those gaps. A shop that buys new but skips the installer relationship is nearly as exposed as a shop that buys used with no service history. The value in buying new is not the sticker — it is the paired warranty and installer support. On a car lift automotive purchase that is meant to run for fifteen years, the paired relationship is the actual product. The steel and hydraulics are the delivery mechanism.

Myth 3: Wheel Bearing Work Is Just Wheel Work

The Marion shop’s specialty is wheel bearing service on premium European sedans. This is precision work — the bearings themselves are tight-tolerance parts, and the geometry of a wheel-off, hub-out job puts specific demands on the lift. The vehicle sits on the lift with the wheels off for extended periods. The tech works with the hub in a state where axial load on the arm can be significant when press tools are engaged. And the entire time, arm restraints are the only thing keeping the arm from rotating under side load.

Not every car lift automotive product is spec’d for this kind of work. Some low-end two-posts have arm restraint systems designed for tire-swap use and rated for lower side load. They will hold up under a rotation but not under repeated bearing work with press engagement. When we build a quote for a European specialty shop, we spec commercial-grade restraint systems with hardened pins and gear teeth designed for high side load. The Marion shop originally thought all restraints were the same — they are not. This is where the used-vs-new decision gets specifically important: an aging restraint system doing bearing work is much more risky than an aging restraint doing tire rotations. Component wear compounds with the load profile.

Myth 4: The Cheapest Path Is Always Cheaper

The used auction lift was priced at maybe a third of a comparable new car lift automotive setup. On paper that felt like a huge win. When we walked through the total cost, it changed. Add anchor re-drilling because the previous slab pattern would not match theirs. Add a full cable set because the existing cables were of unknown age. Add hydraulic hose replacement for the same reason. Add a seal service on the cylinder. Add an installer to actually put it in. Add uncertainty on parts availability if anything else goes bad in year one.

By the time we added those line items, the used lift was about 70% the cost of new — and 100% the risk. The new lift came with a warranty, a fresh cable set, documented anchor bolts, and our installer’s phone number. That is the calculation we walk every customer through. Cheap purchase prices hide expensive service tails, and the tail on a used lift with no history is long. The Marion shop’s owner appreciated the math being laid out plainly. His decision to go new was not because we pressured him — it was because the numbers landed there once we saw them together. Cheap is only cheap if the total is cheap. Otherwise it is just deferred cost.

Myth 5: Any Installer Will Do

This one comes up more often on used purchases than new. When a shop buys used they often think, we can hire any handy guy to bolt it down. This works exactly until the first cable stretches unevenly and no one can diagnose why. The installer relationship is where the diagnosis happens. On a new car lift automotive purchase our installer team knows the platform intimately — we have installed hundreds of the same model and we know the failure signatures.

On a used lift, unless you can carry the installer relationship over from the previous owner, you are essentially adopting an orphan. The Marion shop had no relationship with the auction lift’s original installer. We told them we would still be willing to install and support the used unit, but at a higher labor rate because we would be documenting the platform from scratch and taking on unknowns. That labor delta closed the used-vs-new gap further. The lesson: if you cannot inherit the installer relationship, buying used is more expensive than the sticker suggests. Buying new with a fresh installer relationship is often the cheaper total path.

Myth 6: The Decision Is Only About the Lift

The final myth is that the used-vs-new decision is a purchasing decision. It is not. It is an operational decision that ripples through cable stocking, seal service intervals, arm restraint pin replacement cadence, and parts pipeline diversity. A shop with two new lifts of the same model has one spare parts kit that covers both. A shop with one new and one used lift of different models has two spare kits and twice the pipeline complexity.

For the Marion shop, choosing new meant standardizing across all three bays on the same car lift automotive platform. That standardization pays off every day — techs move between bays without recalibration, spares are cross-compatible, and service intervals sync. It also pays off during hiring and training. New techs learn one platform, not two or three. This is the operational math that used-lift buyers often miss. It is not just the cost of the steel — it is the cost of running a heterogeneous fleet of lifts through a fifteen-year service life. When we help a shop think through the total picture, the new-lift decision almost always makes sense for a specialty operation like theirs. Not always. But almost.
