A rural farm shop owner outside Marion, Iowa, called us about adding a car lift automotive to the corner of his machine shed. He does a lot of wheel bearing service on his own equipment and on a few neighbors’ trucks, plus the occasional hydraulic cylinder seal job on farm implements he brings back to the shed. His question was direct: what should he check before he wires money, and what should he do to the building before the lift arrives. We built him a pre-purchase checklist, and this article is that checklist expanded, in the same order we run through it with any farm-shop buyer in eastern Iowa.

Measure the shed before you spec the lift
The first item on the checklist is ceiling height at the highest point directly above where the lift will sit. Not the peak of the shed, not the wall height, but the clearance under any purlin, joist, or truss chord above the footprint. Farm sheds often have exposed trusses that hang below the roof deck, and we have measured sheds where the usable clearance was a full foot less than the owner assumed. For a car lift automotive rated at 9,000 or 10,000 lb, you want a minimum of 11 feet 6 inches from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction.
Second is the working footprint on the floor. Column-to-column spread is usually about 11 to 12 feet, and you want at least three feet of walkaround on the sides and five feet at the head. Add another five feet in front for vehicle entry. Farm sheds are wide enough for this, but the shed is often full of other things: a welder, a bench, a plow attachment sitting against the wall. Clear the footprint before we deliver. Clearing after is a bad afternoon.
The concrete question every farm shop faces
Older Marion-area farm sheds sit on slabs that range from four-inch reinforced concrete to a two-inch mud pad poured over dirt. A car lift automotive needs a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete under the columns. Anything less requires a cut-out and repour under each column, typically a two-by-two-foot section down to at least four inches, tied to the surrounding slab with epoxy dowels.
You do not have to guess. A concrete cutter with a diamond blade can pull a core sample in an hour, and you know the thickness and roughly the strength. We do this on every farm-shed install where the slab history is unknown. If the pour is old enough to have seen frost cycles, we also check for hairline cracking near the planned column locations. Small cracks a few feet away from the anchor pattern are usually fine. Cracks running through the anchor pattern are a repour situation. Skipping this step is how anchors pull out in year two. We have seen it, and we do not want to see it in Marion.
Capacity for wheel bearing and light equipment work
Wheel bearing work on a farm shop’s typical vehicles, three-quarter-ton pickups, one-ton service trucks, and the occasional trailer, does not push a well-specced car lift automotive to its limits. What can push it is when the neighbor brings over a heavier truck or an implement to work on. We ask farm buyers to name the heaviest vehicle they realistically expect on the lift over the next ten years and to add a 25 percent margin.
For most Marion farm shops that produces a 10,000 lb two-post as the answer. It handles every pickup, most service trucks with light beds, and the occasional car or SUV owned by family. It will not handle a full one-ton dually with a service body loaded, and it will not handle a semi tractor. That is not what a farm car lift automotive is for. If the shop does heavy-duty truck work, we spec upward to a 15K or step into four-post territory. Ask the honest question about the heaviest vehicle, and the capacity picks itself.
Cylinder seal service and the tools it needs
Farm shops that do implement cylinder seal work already have the seal kits, the snap ring pliers, and a way to secure the cylinder body. What the lift adds is a stable, safe way to get a mounted cylinder off the tractor or implement. On a two-post, that means the arms and pads can reach the frame or the mount points on the equipment.
For heavy implements, sometimes you want the pieces on a four-post runway instead, because the runway supports the whole assembly without requiring precise pad placement. Our Marion caller works on smaller cylinders that he can dismount by hand, so the two-post covers his need. He asked about stocking seal kits, and we pointed him at the parts lookup for the two hydraulic cylinder seal kits he runs most often. Electrical service to the shed
Most farm sheds have 220V single-phase available for welders and air compressors. A car lift automotive power unit runs on the same service, typically drawing 15 to 20 amps under load. We do not run the lift on a shared circuit with the welder. It works most of the time, and one day it does not, and you are troubleshooting a lift stall that is really a breaker trip. If the shed’s main service is undersized, the lift installation is the moment to think about a service upgrade. Adding a mid-tier lift to a service that is already close to capacity limits future flexibility. We flagged this for our Marion caller, whose shed had a 100-amp panel with headroom. Delivery, install, and what to have ready
A car lift automotive delivery to a farm shed typically arrives on a curtain-side flatbed. The shed needs a route that a flatbed can back into, plus a spot to set the crate near the install point. Deep gravel driveways can bog a loaded flatbed in spring. If your driveway gets soft, schedule the delivery for late summer or after a hard freeze. We coordinate with the freight carrier on this.
Have the slab clear, the electrical drop pulled to the intended power unit location, and the overhead obstructions confirmed. We will bring the anchoring hardware, the torque tools, the hydraulic fluid, and the ALI paperwork. Install runs about half a day on a good slab, longer if a repour is included. Before we leave, we load-test the lift with a vehicle we ask you to bring in. That first live cycle is the confirmation everything is right. Every car lift automotive we install gets that test.
