Start with the work, not the wall

The wrong sequence, starting with “we have ten feet of ceiling and a 20-amp outlet,” locks you into a car lift automotive product that can only do half of what you actually need. Start with the work. Write down the three most common jobs you do, then write down the two jobs you would like to be able to do next year that you cannot do today. Bring that list to us. Budget tiers and what your dollar actually buys
Racing teams sometimes walk in with a budget of three thousand dollars and a picture of a lift someone found on Facebook Marketplace. The mid-tier, roughly the price of a good used trailer, buys you an entry commercial two-post or a Rotary home-tier model. Move up one more tier and you are into Rotary SPO series or Challenger commercial two-posts, which are the lifts every serious late-model shop we have built out is running.
The tier decision is not about ego, it is about resale, parts availability ten years from now, and whether the lift will hold calibration for alignment work. A Rotary SPO12 bought today from us will still be worth real money in a decade because the parts are stocked, the columns are welded properly, and the cylinders are rebuildable. A no-name lift will be worth zero. Two-post or four-post for alignment work
Race alignment is where the two-post versus four-post argument gets real. A two-post car lift automotive setup, like a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL12, puts the car in the air by the frame and leaves the wheels hanging. That is fantastic for suspension checks, ball joint work, corner weighting off the car, and dropping the axles. It is not what you want if you plan to do the actual toe-and-camber sweep on the same lift, because you need a flat runway to roll the front wheels and turn plates that sit level.
A four-post alignment rack, the Rotary AR series is the reference, gives you the runway, the slip plates, and the built-in rolling jacks so you can raise a wheel for a tie-rod turn without breaking your setup. It costs roughly two-and-a-half times what a plain two-post costs, and it eats floor space a small race shop may not have. The honest middle path for a two-car dirt operation is a two-post for daily work plus a set of drive-on ramps and portable turn plates for the once-a-week alignment check. Symmetric or asymmetric for stock cars
Two-post lifts come in two flavors and the difference matters more than crew chiefs realize until they have bought the wrong one. A symmetric two-post car lift automotive design places both columns straight across from each other, arms of equal length, so the vehicle sits balanced with the door about even with the column. An asymmetric design rotates the columns so the car sits back thirty degrees, giving the driver door clearance to open. For a street shop working modern sedans and full-size trucks, that is critical.
For a racing operation the answer is different. A stock car does not have a door in the working sense, you climb through the window, and the frame pickup points are stiff and forgiving. A symmetric lift lets you drive straight in, plants the car dead center, and gives you full access to both sides for pit work. If the same lift will also handle the crew’s daily drivers and the tow rig, a versa-symmetric model like the Rotary SPOA10 gives you both patterns at the flip of the arms. That is the lift we recommend most often to racing shops that also work on street cars. It is not the cheapest lift on the wall, but it is the one that will still be useful when the season is over.
Model numbers worth writing on the whiteboard
Here is the short list of specific lifts we point crew chiefs at when the budget is set. On the two-post side: Rotary SPO10 (10,000 lb, base commercial, best budget serious buy), Rotary SPOA10 (versa-symmetric, our most-recommended shop lift), Rotary SPO12 (12,000 lb, tall-post, the everything-lift), Challenger CL10V3 (Challenger’s answer to the SPO10, made in the U.S., excellent value), and Challenger E12 (12,000 lb, commercial three-stage arms). Capacity, reach, and the math of race-car dimensions
A late-model dirt car weighs somewhere between 2,300 and 2,700 pounds ready to race. A pull truck is 6,000 to 8,000 pounds. A crew-cab dually with a race trailer coupled is well past 9,000 on the axle. The car lift automotive capacity you buy has to cover the heaviest vehicle you will ever put on it, not the average, not the race car alone, but the tow rig on a Monday morning when the trailer is stuck and you want to check the transmission cooler.
That math almost always points to 10,000 pounds minimum and 12,000 pounds if you can afford it. The nine-inch difference in column height between a Rotary SPO10 and an SPO12 buys you enough room to swing a wheel-well hoist under a stock car when the car is in the air, which sounds trivial until you are on your back doing it. Reach math is the second variable: standard-length arms on a two-post cover a 100-to-130-inch wheelbase, which handles a stock car and a pickup fine. If you also work on stretched-cab duallies, spec the extended-reach arm option. It is a factory add-on for both Rotary and Challenger and it is cheap insurance. Delivery from Ames to northern Missouri
We physically install car lift automotive equipment on a regular basis in a triangle that stretches from Des Moines south through Trenton, Missouri, and east to the Quad Cities. Northern Missouri is a comfortable drive for our install crew: Chillicothe, Bethany, Kirksville, Maryville, and Cameron all fall inside a two-and-a-half-hour truck run. We can do a same-week install if the concrete is right and the electrical is roughed in, and we often do exactly that during the racing off-season when shops are catching up on infrastructure.
The rest of the delivery equation is honest freight math: an anchored two-post lift ships from our warehouse or drop-ships from the factory to a business address with a forklift. If your race shop has a dock or a skid steer, freight is straightforward. If not, we bring our own truck and unload with the lift crew when we install. That eats a small fraction of the total quote but it saves you a day of arguing with a freight terminal about missing crating.
