Cylinder seals do not fail from age alone. They fail from contamination and from the piston rod scoring the sealing surface over years of unfiltered service. On a two-post lift running daily in a Sioux City fleet garage doing differential fluid service, brake work, and general shop rolling, the ram travels up and down between twenty and forty times a day. Each stroke pulls road salt, brake dust, and airborne grit past the wiper. Over time the wiper degrades, the rod picks up microscopic pits, and the primary U-cup seal starts weeping oil down the column base.

Arm restraints are the little serrated gear at the base of each swing arm that locks the arm angle once you set the pickup point. On a lift running twenty cycles a day, those gears wear. When they wear enough to skip a tooth, the arm can rotate under load, which is exactly the failure mode that drops a vehicle off the pad. Every safety walkthrough we do starts with cycling each arm on each column and listening for the click count. A healthy restraint clicks crisply as you rotate. A worn one drags, chatters, or skips.

Behind the restraint sits the safety cam, the rack of steel notches that lets the carriage lock at each height. Grease those. The specific thing to look for is a single broken strand at the swaged fitting where the cable enters the carriage or the top of the column. The torque check is a five-minute job with a click-type torque wrench and it belongs on every quarterly PM. If any anchor spins under torque instead of clamping, that anchor is done, and the whole column needs to come off the slab so a fresh anchor set can go in adjacent holes with epoxy backfill of the failed hole.

The other thing we look at is the slab itself. Municipal fleet garages built in the 1970s and 80s often show hairline cracks radiating out from column bases after fifteen years of load cycling. Those cracks are not automatically a problem, but they are a signal. If the crack is wider than a business card and shows any lift of one side above the other, we call in a concrete assessment before the next cycle. Documentation That Keeps a State Inspector Happy

OSHA and ALI both expect written records of daily operator checks and annual inspections by a qualified inspector.
