Last fall we installed a car lift automotive package in a West Des Moines detached garage for an overlanding builder who wanted a proper bay to work on his 4Runner and a friend’s Tacoma. The project ran into every single electrical wrinkle we regularly warn customers about, so this case study is a walk-through of the decisions we made together to keep the timeline and the budget honest. The Bay We Started With

The West Des Moines garage was a detached two-car with a nine-foot ceiling and a four-inch slab at unknown psi. The customer had originally wanted a two-post lift because he had watched videos of tire rotations on two-posts and liked the openness. When we walked the bay, we recommended a four-post with a rolling wheel-off jack tray instead, because the ceiling would not clear a raised Tacoma on a two-post at full rise and the concrete had not been core-tested.

This is a common early decision point in a car lift automotive project. The customer sees a bay dimension he thinks he has, and the reality of ceiling clearance plus vehicle overall height plus lift full rise adds up to a couple of inches he does not have. A four-post lift lifts the vehicle from underneath the tires, which puts the roof lower relative to the ceiling than a two-post that lifts from the frame. For a raised 4Runner with a rooftop tent mount, the difference is three or four inches of usable rise, which is the difference between working comfortably and hitting the ceiling.

The Electrical Story: 220V Single-Phase Reality

The overlander customer had a 100 amp panel in the garage with two open double-pole slots. His main house panel was 200 amp. A residential four-post car lift automotive package draws roughly 15 to 20 amps on a 220V single-phase circuit. That looks fine on paper against a 100 amp subpanel. In practice, the run from the subpanel to the lift location wound through a wall the customer wanted to keep finished, and the shortest legal route added forty feet of ten-gauge wire.

The extra wire is not the problem. The problem is voltage drop over the run under load. A ten-gauge run of forty feet at 20 amps drops about three percent, which the motor can handle but which reduces motor life over time. We recommended upsizing to eight-gauge for that specific run, which added roughly a hundred dollars in wire and a couple hours of pull time but which meant the lift would see full nameplate voltage under load for its whole life. Details like this are why the electrical contractor should walk the bay before the lift order goes in.

Why Three-Phase Was Not an Option

The customer had asked whether he should convert his garage to three-phase because he had seen it recommended online for lifts. The answer for a residential car lift automotive install is almost always no. Three-phase service is expensive to bring in from the utility on a residential meter, and most home-garage lifts do not offer a three-phase motor option in the first place. The Rotary and BendPak home-garage four-post lifts we install for hobbyist customers are 220V single-phase across the board.

Three-phase makes sense for a commercial shop with multiple motors running simultaneously and for the heavier lifts that offer three-phase motors as the primary configuration. For a two-vehicle residential build bay, single-phase is the correct answer and any online guidance suggesting otherwise is applying commercial-shop logic to a home garage. We walked the West Des Moines customer through the math and he was relieved to skip the utility conversation entirely and just use his existing service.

Tire Rotation and Wheel-Off Work on a Four-Post

A four-post lift with a rolling wheel-off jack tray is our default recommendation for a hobbyist who does tire rotation and wheel work regularly. The rolling jack sits between the runways, rolls to the front or rear axle position, and lifts the vehicle off the runways so the wheels can come off. It is a two-minute setup once you are used to it, and it turns a four-post into a versatile bay for tire, brake, and suspension work.

On the West Des Moines install, we spec’d the four-post with a single rolling jack rather than a pair because the customer’s work mix was one vehicle at a time. If he had been running two overlanders through the bay simultaneously we would have added a second jack, but for solo hobbyist work a single jack is plenty. The car lift automotive setup he ended up with was more capable and more comfortable to work under than the two-post he had originally been looking at, and the price came in below the two-post option once we included the wheel-off jack.

Anchor Kit and Slab Verification

Four-post lifts are floor-standing rather than anchored, but they still need a slab within a certain flatness tolerance. On the West Des Moines job, we brought a rotary laser and shot the floor at nine points across the lift footprint. The variation came out at 0.4 inches across sixteen feet, which is at the outer edge of what most manufacturers accept. We shimmed the two low corners at commissioning to bring the runways coplanar and documented the shim thickness in the closeout packet.

For a home garage car lift automotive install, the slab is almost always the item most likely to cause a warranty question later, and photographing the shim work and the level readings up front is what protects both the customer and us if a warranty claim comes back. The slab work in the West Des Moines job added about an hour to the install and about a hundred dollars in shims. If the variation had been worse we would have recommended a self-leveling underlayment pour before the lift set, which is a bigger job but which is sometimes the only right answer.

Overlanding-Specific Accessories

An overlander running larger tires and a heavier build wants a couple of accessories beyond the base lift. A drive-through center runway ramp is helpful for a low-profile skid plate. A pair of extended-height jack posts is helpful for full-size tire diameter clearance under the jack. A caster kit for the lift lets a hobbyist roll the lift to a corner when the bay is not in use, which the West Des Moines customer appreciated for his winter storage plan.

We spec’d all three accessories on the West Des Moines job. The total accessory cost added roughly ten percent to the lift line item and turned a base four-post into a build-shop configuration that suits the work. Commissioning and the First Rotation

We commissioned the lift on a Saturday and the customer rotated the tires on his 4Runner as the first job. He timed himself against his previous ramp-and-floor-jack routine and cut the rotation from about ninety minutes to about twenty. That is a typical outcome for a hobbyist who moves from ramps to a proper lift, and it is the reason so many of our home-garage customers wish they had installed a lift years earlier.
