A car lift automotive install in a home garage is a three-step process: pick the right lift, do the site prep, and stand out of the way on install day. The middle step is the one that trips people up, and it is why we spend more time on site surveys than on any other part of the sale. Last month we helped a first-time buyer in West Des Moines get his garage ready for a four-post lift. He asked all the right questions early, which meant install day went fast. This article is the buyer’s guide we wish every first-time owner had before they clicked buy on a lift they were not ready to receive.

Step 1 — measure the room before you pick the lift
The most common mistake we see on a first-time car lift automotive purchase is picking the lift first and measuring the garage second. It works the other way around. Get out a tape and measure four things: floor-to-ceiling clear height at the tallest point of the garage, width between the walls where the lift will live, depth from the garage door to the back wall, and door-header clearance. Write those numbers down. Then look at the lift options within those limits, not the other way around.
Our West Des Moines buyer had 10 feet 6 inches to a finished ceiling in a garage he had built in 2018. That is a common ceiling height in modern homes, and it rules out a full-height four-post that needs 11 feet 6 inches. It rules in a mid-height four-post or a mid-rise two-post. We spec’d him a mid-height four-post because his primary use case was seasonal vehicle storage, not service work. The right lift for the room, not the aspirational lift he had seen online.
Step 2 — verify the slab
Concrete is the foundation of every car lift automotive install, and thin or under-strength concrete kills more installs than any other factor. Home garages built after 2000 are usually four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, which is the minimum for most residential lifts. Older garages can be thinner. Garages with in-floor heat can have a specific rebar layout that affects anchor placement. If you do not know what is under your garage floor, a core sample is $150 to $250 and tells you everything you need to know before you order.
Our West Des Moines buyer had a copy of his builder’s spec sheet — six inches of concrete with rebar on 18-inch centers. That is generous, and it meant we could anchor anywhere in the bay without worrying about the anchor coming too close to a joint or edge. Not every homeowner has that documentation. If you do not, get the core sample. It is the cheapest insurance you will buy on the whole project, and it turns install day from a question mark into a boring three-hour job.
Step 3 — plan the power drop
Most home-garage lifts run on 208-230V single-phase power, drawing 20 to 30 amps at start. That is a dedicated 30-amp circuit run from your panel to the lift location. Some newer garages have a spare 240V outlet from a former dryer or EV charger install; if that is you, you may be able to reuse the circuit if the amperage matches. If not, budget $400 to $800 for an electrician to run new wire from your panel to the lift bay. Do that before install day, not during.
Our West Des Moines buyer had a panel with two open 30-amp slots and an electrician who could come out on a Wednesday. Total electrical work was $525 and one afternoon. When our install crew arrived on Friday, the outlet was live, tested, and ready. Compare that with the alternative — install crew shows up, no power, lift sits in the middle of the garage overnight while an electrician gets scheduled — and you see why the prep is worth more than the sticker discount you could negotiate on the lift itself.
Step 4 — clear the space
A car lift automotive install needs a working footprint of about 15 by 25 feet minimum for a four-post, and the crew needs an additional walk-around of about three feet on all sides. That means the garage needs to be genuinely clear the morning of install. Not “most of it clear” — clear. Every bicycle, every storage tub, every project car, every workbench moved out of the footprint. This sounds obvious. It is not, because we have arrived at more than one install where the customer had cleared the middle but not the corners, and we lost an hour to relocation before we could start.
Our West Des Moines buyer parked his daily driver at his neighbor’s for the day and moved his workbench into the driveway. When the crew rolled in, they walked in with the equipment and started the layout inside of ten minutes. That is the target. If you can walk into your garage the morning of install and see nothing but the floor and the walls, you are ready. If not, spend the evening before doing the clear. It is worth the time.
Step 5 — the door and header check
Every garage door adds a header that hangs down from the ceiling. Standard residential doors run at 7 feet, sometimes 8 feet. That header is often the lowest point in the garage and will hit the lift as it rises if you do not plan for it. Measure from the garage floor to the bottom of the header when the door is closed. That is your actual usable ceiling in the front of the bay. If the lift’s raised height plus the vehicle plus a foot of margin exceeds the header, you have to move the lift back or pick a shorter lift.
Our West Des Moines buyer’s header was at 8 feet 4 inches with a torsion-bar opener at 8 feet 2 inches. That would have been a problem for a full-height four-post but was fine for the mid-height we spec’d. If a torsion bar is in the way, a jackshaft opener moves the motor to the side and can add 18 inches of clear ceiling. That is a $600 upgrade that pays for itself if it lets you buy the lift you actually want. Ask about it before you compromise on the lift.
Step 6 — the delivery and unload day
Freight shows up before the install crew for a car lift automotive delivery. On a residential install, that usually means a semi with a liftgate parked in your driveway or at the curb, and a pallet weighing 1,600 to 2,400 pounds landing on your concrete. Have the driveway clear. Have your phone on you. Be home for the delivery window. Sign the bill of lading only after inspecting the pallet for shipping damage. Circle any dents or scuffs on the paperwork before the driver leaves.
The West Des Moines delivery went smoothly because the buyer had done a walk-through with us over the phone the morning of. He knew the driver would not help move the pallet, so he had cleared a spot inside the garage door where the liftgate could drop the load and it could roll on the pallet jack the last ten feet. Small detail, big time savings on the day. A little preparation avoids the awkward driveway conversation everyone dreads.

Install day started at 8:00 AM and the lift was operational by 12:30 PM. That is a fast install and it happened because every prep step was done in advance. The buyer sent us a text that afternoon that said, “That was easier than I thought.” That is the goal. A car lift automotive install should be a boring day. If it is exciting, something has gone wrong. The prep is what turns the exciting version into the boring version, and the prep is entirely within the buyer’s control if they know what to prepare for.
