Every car lift automotive project we quote has a number the customer expects and a number they don’t. The one they expect is on the price tag. The one they don’t is everything between the freight truck and the first vehicle in the air. Last fall a heavy-duty truck shop owner out near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us about adding a transmission service position to a building he’d just bought. He’d already picked equipment. What he hadn’t done was measure his slab thickness, check his panel capacity, or find out that the previous tenant had run floor drains straight through where the columns needed to go. That job worked out fine, but it worked out fine because we surveyed it before anything shipped. Here’s the full breakdown, from equipment through commissioning.

The Site Survey Comes First, Not Last

A site survey takes us about forty-five minutes and answers questions that cost thousands if you guess wrong. We measure four things: slab thickness and condition, ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, electrical service and available breaker capacity, and floor layout including drains, conduit, and any expansion joints in the anchor zone.

Slab is the big one. Most commercial two-post lifts want four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more — heavy-duty units at 18,000 lb and up commonly spec six inches. We core-drill or use a rebar scanner to check, because “the guy who built it said it was six inches” is not a specification. On that Nebraska-border job the slab was four and a quarter with rebar in an inconvenient place, and we ended up cutting and pouring two footing pads. That added a week and a real cost, but it was a known cost instead of a discovery halfway through the install. Ceiling is the second trap. A 12,000 lb overhead two-post needs roughly twelve feet of clear height to the crossbar, and truss bottoms, light fixtures, radiant tube heaters, and garage door tracks all count as ceiling. If you’re short, the answer is a baseplate or clearfloor model, and we’d rather tell you that before you own the wrong lift.

Cost Line One: The Equipment Itself

Equipment is the number people budget for, so let’s be direct about tiers. Home-garage four-posts and entry two-posts from BendPak and Atlas sit at the bottom of the commercial range. A new commercial-grade 10,000 to 12,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger lands in the mid-tier — call it a few thousand for the base unit. Step up to 15,000 or 18,000 lb for medium-duty trucks and you’re in the upper-mid range. Heavy-duty mobile column sets and 40,000 lb-plus configurations are a different conversation entirely and quoted per project.

The line items that get missed at this stage are accessories that aren’t really optional. A four-post used for service instead of storage needs a rolling jack — we get service calls specifically about rolling jack adjustment on Challenger four-posts, and every one of them started as a customer who bought the jack six months after the lift and had to schedule a second visit. Truck adapters, drive-through ramps, extended arms, and taller adapter stacks for lifted pickups all belong in the initial order. So do a spare set of cables if your bay can’t take downtime. On a transmission service position, add a transmission jack rated for what you’re actually pulling — an Allison out of a medium-duty is not a two-hundred-pound part. Getting a car lift automotive package quoted complete, accessories included, prevents the death-by-a-thousand-add-ons problem.

Cost Line Two: Freight and Rigging

Lifts ship on flatbeds or in crates, and they are heavy and awkward. A two-post ships as two columns plus arms plus a power unit, and a set of columns runs well over a thousand pounds. Freight from the factory to a rural address near the Iowa-Nebraska border is not the same price as freight to a Des Moines dock, and residential or limited-access delivery adds a surcharge that catches homeowners constantly.

The other question is whether the truck has a liftgate and whether you have a forklift. If neither, somebody is paying for equipment to get the crate off the trailer. We haul a fair amount ourselves for exactly this reason — our truck and trailer means one fewer party in the chain and one fewer thing to schedule. When we quote an installed price, freight and rigging are inside it. When you buy equipment online from a national seller and then hire a local installer, they’re not, and that gap is where budgets blow up. Ask the question directly before you order: who is unloading this, with what, and who pays for it? On a heavy-duty install with mobile columns, the freight and handling line can approach the cost of a small entry-level lift. Plan for it. Also plan storage — if the slab work isn’t done, you need somewhere dry to keep a crate for two weeks, and a gravel lot in February is not it.

Cost Line Three: Concrete and Electrical

Concrete work is the most variable line on any quote. If your slab passes inspection, this line is zero. If it doesn’t, you’re looking at saw-cutting, excavating, forming, pouring footings to spec, and then waiting — twenty-eight days for full cure, though we’ll typically anchor at seven to fourteen days on a case-by-case basis with the engineering to back it. Expect the concrete line to run from a few hundred dollars for a couple of footing pads to several thousand for a full bay replacement.

Electrical is more predictable but still often underestimated. Most commercial two-post power units are 208/230V single-phase, drawing on a 30-amp circuit. Some heavy-duty and inground units want three-phase. A licensed electrician running conduit thirty feet from an existing panel with capacity is a half-day job. Adding a subpanel, or upgrading service because the building was wired for a hay barn, is a multi-thousand-dollar project with a utility timeline attached. On that border job the panel had room but the disconnect was on the wrong wall, and we coordinated so the electrician’s rough-in happened the day before our install crew arrived rather than the day after. Sequencing is free and saves a return trip. A car lift automotive install that gets concrete, electrical, and install scheduled in the right order finishes in a day; one that doesn’t takes three weeks of calendar time for the same eight hours of work.

Cost Line Four: Installation Labor and Commissioning

Our install labor on a standard two-post runs a predictable range depending on drive time and whether we’re removing an old unit. A four-post takes a little longer because of runway alignment and cable routing. Mobile columns are faster to set up but require battery and charger commissioning. Inground is a whole different animal — that’s an excavation project, not an install, and it’s quoted accordingly.

What installation labor actually buys you is the part nobody sees. Anchor torque to spec with a calibrated wrench. Column plumb within tolerance in both axes. Cable equalization so both carriages arrive at the same height and stay there. Safety latch engagement verified at every lock position on both columns. Hydraulic system bled properly so the lift doesn’t drift. Overhead shutoff bar adjusted. A load test with a real vehicle. And documentation — because if you’re a commercial shop, your insurer or your state inspector may want to see that this was installed by somebody competent. We’ve been called out to fix owner-installed lifts where the anchors were in cracked concrete or the safeties never fully engaged on one side, and the repair cost more than the install would have. Buying a car lift automotive package installed isn’t buying convenience, it’s buying the part that keeps a technician alive.

What a Transmission Service Position Needs Specifically

Transmission work changes the requirements in ways that surprise people. You’re not just lifting a vehicle — you’re removing a large mass from underneath it, which means the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts while it’s in the air, and you need floor space directly under the vehicle for a transmission jack that’s taller than a floor jack. Height matters more than for any other service. On a two-post you want the truck high enough that a transmission jack fully extended can meet the case, which often means running near max lift height.

For medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, that’s frequently where a two-post stops working and mobile columns start making sense — four columns, no fixed geometry, and you can position them around a wheelbase that changes truck to truck. A truck shop near the Nebraska line we worked with runs a 15,000 lb two-post for pickups and a mobile column set for anything with air brakes, and that split covers everything that comes through the door. If your fleet is mixed, resist the urge to buy one unit that sort of handles everything. Two right-sized positions almost always beat one compromised one. And whatever you buy, plan the drain and fluid handling — transmission service produces gallons of fluid, and you want a catch pan and a waste drum within reach, not across the shop. Putting the Whole Number Together

Here’s how we’d have a customer budget realistically. Take the equipment price. Add fifteen to twenty percent for accessories you’ll want within the first year — rolling jack, adapters, spare cables. Add freight and rigging, which for a rural Iowa or Nebraska address is meaningful, not trivial. Add electrical, which is a half-day of licensed labor if you’re lucky and a subpanel if you’re not. Add concrete only if the survey says so. Add install labor. That total is your real number, and it’s commonly thirty to fifty percent above the sticker on the lift.

The good news is that almost all of it is knowable in advance. A forty-five-minute survey converts every one of those unknowns into a line item, and once it’s a line item you can decide about it.
