Why We Look at the Electrical Panel Before the Lift
Third-generation shops in eastern Iowa were often wired when the biggest draw in the building was a compressor and a bank of fluorescent lights. Add a modern car lift automotive package, a plasma cutter, and a shop vac, and the panel is the choke point. Before we quote a lift, we walk the shop with a meter, note the panel amperage, count the free breaker slots, and ask what else runs when the lift is up. Single-Phase vs Three-Phase for a Car Lift Automotive Setup
Almost every 2-post and 4-post lift sold into a small commercial shop today ships with a motor that can be configured for 208-230V single-phase or 208-230V three-phase. Some heavy-duty and mobile-column units require three-phase only. Three-phase pulls less amperage per leg, runs cooler, and lasts longer in a shop that cycles a lift 30+ times a day. Single-phase is what most rural Iowa buildings actually have, and it works fine for a shop cycling 8-15 times a day. The Marion garage had single-phase 230V. We spec’d a Rotary SPO12 with the single-phase motor and moved on. Do not let a salesperson pressure you into a three-phase converter unless your utility genuinely will not deliver three-phase to the meter, which is rare inside city limits and common on a section-line rural service. If you are unsure, ask your co-op or utility for a service availability letter before you order the lift. That letter is free and prevents a five-figure mistake.
Wire Gauge, Breaker Size, and Real Amp Draw
A 220V single-phase 2-post lift motor pulls roughly 20-25 amps at start and settles under 15 amps at full lift. The manufacturer plate is the source of truth — Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all print it on the power unit. For a 25-amp motor we run 10-gauge THHN on a dedicated 30-amp breaker, straight to the power unit, no splices in the conduit. Distance matters: at 60 feet of run, 10-gauge is still fine. At 120 feet from panel to lift, we step up to 8-gauge to keep voltage drop under 3 percent. For a car lift automotive install that will see hundreds of cycles a month, undersized wire is the fastest way to burn a motor. We include the conduit, the breaker, and the wire in the written quote so nothing is verbal. Three-phase 30K and 40K lifts are a different conversation — usually 30-50 amps per leg on 208V — and we bring in a licensed electrician on those every time.
Ceiling Height, Column Height, Overhead vs Baseplate
The Marion shop has a 12-foot 4-inch ceiling at the low point — a truss beam we measured with a laser. A standard-height 2-post column is 11 feet 11 inches. The overhead crossbar adds another 4-8 inches for the cable tray and shutoff. That puts the top of a standard overhead lift right at or through the truss. Our options were an extended-height column (bad idea on a low ceiling), a baseplate configuration (crossbar at the floor), or a low-ceiling overhead. We went with a floorplate 2-post — cable tray runs across the floor between columns instead of overhead. The tradeoff is you step over the tray. On a garage that pulls exhaust and driveshafts daily, that tradeoff is worth it because the arms go higher on the column and the truck lifts to a comfortable working height instead of stopping short. Measure your ceiling three times with a laser before you order.
Working Under Exhaust and Driveshafts: The Reach You Need
Family shops that do exhaust work and driveline pulls need two things a lot of internet lifts skip: enough drive-thru clearance between the columns and enough arm reach at the outboard swing. Rotary SPO12 gives 118 inches between columns and 60 inches of outer swing — enough to slide an F-350 dually with a diesel exhaust straight through and still put the arms on the frame pads. Cheaper 10K lifts often run 100-inch drive-thru, which is fine for cars but tight on a heavy-half. Ask for the drive-thru number in inches before you sign anything. On the Marion job we also spec’d a set of frame-cradle adapters and truck adapters — a car lift automotive setup that pulls Silverados and Duramaxes needs the extra 5-8 inches of pad height to clear pinch welds and side steps. Adapters are cheap. Bent rocker panels are not.
Anchoring to a 4-Inch Slab in an Older Marion Building
Iowa shop slabs from the 1970s and 1980s are typically 4 inches thick, 3,000 PSI concrete, no rebar, poured on a compacted gravel base. Modern 2-post lift install instructions require 4.25 inches minimum, 3,000 PSI, at 30 days cure. Real-world: 4 inches works if the concrete is sound and the anchors go 3.5 inches deep on a wedge-anchor rated for the load. What kills an install is a slab with a control joint or cold pour running right where a column wants to sit. We map the slab with a rebar scanner before drilling. If a joint runs through, we shift the lift 8-12 inches and re-mark. For a car lift automotive shop that will see 20 years of daily cycling, a good anchor pattern matters more than an extra 500 lb of capacity. Under 4 inches or badly cracked, we quote a saw-cut and repour of a 6×8-foot pad. It adds a day and a mid four-figure line but you only pay for the lift once.
