Myth One: Arm Restraints Are Optional Once the Vehicle Is Lifted
This is the myth that comes up most often, and it is the most dangerous. The claim is that once the vehicle is off the ground and settled on the pads, the arm restraint gear teeth are just there to hold arm position while you set up, and can be manually released to reposition. That is not correct. Arm restraints on a car lift automotive package are engaged and load-bearing the entire time the vehicle is on the lift, and the safety of the setup depends on them being engaged. On heavy-battery EVs, where a large fraction of the vehicle mass is centered low and biased toward one axle, a released or worn arm restraint under load can allow the arm to swing under horizontal force. The result is the vehicle sliding off the pad. This is not a theoretical failure mode. We see the aftermath every year. Engaged, healthy arm restraints stay engaged. Full stop.
Myth Two: Safety Cams Are Disabled on Modern Lifts
The competitor’s claim was that modern lifts had softened or removed the mechanical safety-cam engagement in favor of an electronic sensor. That is also incorrect. Every commercial car lift automotive package we sell, including current-year Rotary and Challenger two-post units, has hard mechanical safety locks that engage on the raise stroke and hold the load without hydraulic pressure. The electronics have gotten smarter — audible engagement confirmation, visual indicators, sometimes leveling assist — but the mechanical safety is not gone. On some lifts it is quieter than the older designs, which is where the confusion may come from. Quieter is not the same as absent. The right test is to raise the lift, listen for the engagement, and then bleed the hydraulic pressure. If the vehicle stays put, the safety cams are doing their job. Myth Three: EV Weight Overwhelms Standard Arm Restraints
This one is subtler and it is where the EV specialty shop got tripped up. The claim: EVs are so heavy that standard arm restraints on a car lift automotive package are inadequate. The truth: EV curb weights are higher than comparable ICE vehicles, but they are still well inside the rated load of a properly sized lift. A 6,000-pound EV crossover on a 12,000-pound-rated two-post is loading the lift at half capacity. Arm restraints are engineered for full rated load with a safety margin. Where EV service actually differs is in lift-point selection, because EV battery pack skid plates are load-bearing and easy to damage. The right answer is not a heavier arm restraint. Myth Four: You Can Skip Adapters on Skateboard-Style EVs
Some EVs sit low, with the frame rails behind a plastic aero panel. Some shops, in a hurry, place the arm pad on the plastic panel and lift. That is a myth of convenience, not fact. A car lift automotive setup is only as safe as the pad contact, and the pad has to be on structural steel. Every major EV maker publishes lift points and, in most cases, an approved pad-height adapter. We stock the common ones. The stack-block-and-pray method — random hockey pucks and 2x4s on the pad — is the single most common EV lift failure we see. It works right up until it doesn’t. Buy the adapter. Read the manufacturer’s service manual lift-point diagram. Photograph the pad contact for the first several lifts on any new vehicle. The five minutes cost you nothing. The missing five minutes cost a technician a foot.
Myth Five: A Squeaky Restraint Just Needs Grease
An arm restraint that squeaks, pops, or feels notchy when you position an arm is telling you something. It is not asking for grease. It is asking for inspection. The engagement teeth on the restraint gear can wear, especially in a shop that services a lot of asymmetric-weight vehicles like heavy pickups or, yes, EVs biased to one end. A worn tooth is invisible from above and lethal under load. On our ALI-certified inspections we pull the restraint cover and look at the gear directly. This is not a home-garage-owner job. But it is not an every-year job either. On a car lift automotive setup running a normal EV shop caseload, we spec restraint inspection every twelve to eighteen months. The parts to fix a worn restraint are inexpensive and in stock. The parts to fix a dropped car are not.
Myth Six: EV Shops Need a Special Lift
The final myth, and the one the eastern Nebraska shop had been most worried about, is that EV service requires a specialty lift not sold to general shops. Not true. A well-sized commercial two-post or four-post car lift automotive package handles EVs safely. What EV service does require is the right lift-point references, the right adapters, and a trained tech who slows down at the contact stroke.
