Check the cables at both sheaves for fraying, kinks, or a strand out. Check the safety-lock pins for smooth actuation. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the power unit reservoir. Check the arm-restraint gears for movement play. Check the concrete around the base plates for cracking or spalling.

None of those checks require tools, and any competent car lift automotive owner should teach every technician to do them without being asked. Arm restraints and safety locks: how they actually work

Two mechanisms carry the load in every car lift automotive: the safety-lock ladder that catches the carriage at fixed heights, and the arm restraint that keeps the arms from swinging out from under the vehicle. The safety-lock ladder is a series of notches machined into the column with a spring-loaded pawl that drops into each notch as the carriage rises.
