Why Arm Restraints Fail Silently on Busy Shop Floors
Arm restraints are the small gear-and-pawl mechanisms at the pivot of every arm on a two-post lift, and their job is exactly one thing: keep the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle once the lift is up. When they fail, the arm can rotate under load and the vehicle drops off one pad. That is not theoretical — it happens every year, and every year it happens because the restraint gear teeth have worn or the spring-loaded pawl has been packed with grease and grit until it can no longer engage. On a busy tire shop with 40 pulls a day, that grit builds up fast.
The best car lift automotive safety habit a tire shop can build is a five-second visual check on every arm restraint before every raise. Look at the pawl. Is it seated in a gear tooth? Does it click when the arm is bumped? If the click is missing or muted, the restraint is not doing its job. On Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 lifts, the restraint is externally visible and easy to inspect. On some older lifts, the restraint is inside the pivot boss and requires the arm off to inspect. Either way, every morning before the first pull, look at it.
Safety Cam Engagement You Can Hear from Across the Bay
The primary mechanical safety on any two-post lift is the safety cam — the pawl that drops into the lock ladder on each column as the carriage rises. A properly functioning safety cam clicks every three to four inches of rise. You should hear it from across the bay. If you don’t, either the pawl is stuck, the ladder is bent, or the release cable is holding it up. Any of those three is a stop-work condition on our books, and it should be on yours.
We teach every tire shop tech to raise the lift a foot, listen for two clicks, then set the safeties by lowering slightly onto them before working under the vehicle. That is not a suggestion, it is the manufacturer’s instruction on every ALI-certified lift and it is the OSHA-recognized best practice. The hydraulic cylinder is not the safety — the mechanical safety cam is. Trusting the hydraulic seal alone for eight hours under a Toyota Sequoia is how techs get hurt. The Daily Five-Point Inspection Every Shop Should Run
Here is the five-point daily inspection we teach every central Iowa shop. First, walk each column base and check that the anchor bolts are torqued and the base plate is flush with the concrete. Any gap or lifted edge is a stop-work. Second, look at each lifting cable at the top sheave for broken strands, kinks, or rust bloom. Any broken strand shortens the cable’s life dramatically. Third, cycle the lift up empty and listen for the safety cams clicking. Fourth, visually inspect each arm restraint and confirm the pawl seats.
Fifth, look at the hydraulic hoses from the power unit to each column for weeping, bulging, or chafing. A weeping hose today is a burst hose next week, and a burst hose under load drops the lift onto the safety cams — which is exactly why the safety cams matter. Five points, three minutes, every morning. This is the safety habit that separates a shop with zero lift incidents in twenty years from one with a story. Setting Adapters and Pad Placement Correctly
The other half of lift safety is placing the pads on the manufacturer-designated lift points every single time. Modern unibody vehicles have very specific pinch-weld or reinforced sub-frame points, and lifting anywhere else means bent rocker panels and, in the worst case, the vehicle rolling off the pads. Every tech should have the lifting-point diagram for the top ten vehicle families that walk into your shop taped to a wall or loaded on a tablet. Screw pads, truck adapters, and pad extensions are not accessories — they are safety equipment. If your tire shop lifts pickups and unibodies both, you need both flat pads and pinch-weld cups. If you lift electric vehicles with battery skid plates, you need long adapters that reach past the pack. Skipping adapters because they slow the pull down is a common tire shop mistake and a fixable one. What ALI Certification Actually Means
The ALI gold label on the side of a certified lift means the lift design has been tested by an independent third party against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for load, stability, and safety-system function. It is not a marketing sticker. When we recommend Rotary, Challenger, and Forward as our commercial two-post brands, one of the reasons is that every current model in those lines is ALI-gold-certified and re-certified annually. When we say we won’t sell certain imported off-brand lifts, one of the reasons is that they are not certified at all.
For a tire and alignment shop, ALI certification matters for two practical reasons beyond safety. First, most insurance carriers ask about it during a shop audit, and non-certified lifts can affect coverage. Second, in the very rare event of an incident, an ALI-certified lift with a documented daily inspection log is defensible; a non-certified lift with no log is not. That paper trail is a real risk-management tool, and it is one of the arguments we make every time a shop owner asks why they should not just buy the cheapest lift on Craigslist for the second bay.
Training New Techs on the Lift Before the First Solo Pull
Every shop hires new techs, and every new tech has a first day where they run a lift alone. That day is the highest-risk day of their career. We tell owners to walk every new tech through the full inspection routine, the safety-cam engagement, the pad placement, and the emergency lowering procedure before they touch a customer vehicle. Two hours of training up front saves incidents downstream. Most manufacturers publish a training video for their current lifts, and we send those links free to any shop we sell into.
The emergency lowering procedure is the one everyone forgets to teach. Every ALI-certified lift has a manual bleed valve or lowering handle that will drop the lift under gravity if the hydraulic power fails. Every tech should know where it is and how to use it before they need it.
