A tire and alignment shop owner in the Dubuque area called us last spring because his insurance carrier asked a question he could not answer: was his car lift automotive equipment third-party certified, and when was it last inspected? He had four two-post units, all bought used over a fifteen-year stretch, and not one label he could read. That call turned into a full afternoon walkthrough — every arm, every lock, every anchor bolt, every cable — and it turned into the article you are reading now. We install and service lifts across Iowa from our base in Ames, and this is the safety checklist we actually use when we walk into a tire shop that runs wheels off the ground eighty times a day.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Means

ALI is the Automotive Lift Institute. Their certification program is not a manufacturer’s marketing claim — it is third-party testing at an independent lab against ANSI/ALI ALCTV, the American national standard for lift construction, testing, and validation. A certified model gets loaded past rated capacity, its locks get cycled, its welds get evaluated, and its manuals and labels get reviewed. Then the certification gets audited on an ongoing basis, which is why a manufacturer can lose it. The gold ALI label on the column is the shorthand: if it is there and it is legible, someone outside the factory verified that the machine does what the sticker says.

Shop owners ask us whether it matters in practice, and the honest answer is that it matters in three specific places. Insurance carriers increasingly ask. OSHA inspectors reference ANSI/ALI as the recognized consensus standard when they cite a shop after an incident. And in a lawsuit, uncertified equipment is an easy target. Beyond the paperwork, though, we have pulled apart enough off-brand columns to know the testing catches real problems — undersized lock pawls, thin carriage plates, cable sheaves with no retainers. When you are choosing car lift automotive equipment for a shop where wheels come off all day, certification is the cheapest risk reduction available.

Why Tire and Alignment Work Is Harder on a Lift

General repair loads a lift and leaves it loaded. Tire work does the opposite. A rotation shop cycles up and down constantly, and every cycle is a full stroke on the cylinder seals, a full pass of the cables over the sheaves, and another engagement of the lock ladder. The shop in Dubuque we mentioned was running roughly seventy cycles per bay per day in October and November. That is not abusive — it is the business. But it means their maintenance interval cannot be borrowed from a general repair shop that lifts fifteen cars a day.

There is a second wrinkle specific to alignment and wheel work. Techs push and pull on tires with impact wrenches and pry bars, which puts lateral load into arms and restraints that are designed primarily for vertical load. We see worn arm-restraint gear teeth in tire shops far more often than anywhere else, and we see swing-arm pins egg-shaped from side loading. If your car lift automotive setup includes drop-in turnplates or an alignment rack, add the slip plates and rear-slip mechanisms to the inspection list too — they hide dirt, and dirt is what seizes them. We tell tire shops to plan on greasing arm pivots quarterly instead of annually and to keep a spare set of arm restraint gears on the shelf.

The Lock System: Where We Start Every Inspection

When we walk into a bay, the first thing we do is raise the lift empty and listen. A healthy two-post makes a crisp, even series of clicks as both carriages pass each lock position, and both sides sound the same. If one column goes quiet, or if the clicks are mushy, something in that lock assembly is wrong — a stretched cable, a bent pawl, a broken return spring, or an air cylinder that is not venting. Then we lower onto the locks and check that the carriages sit level. A one-inch difference across the bay is not cosmetic; it means the equalization cables have gone out of sync and the load is no longer shared the way the engineer intended.

Next comes the manual release. Every certified lift has a way to disengage the locks by hand, and in a busy tire shop those linkages get bent by carts and jack stands. We work each one, confirm it springs back, and confirm the pawl fully re-enters the ladder. We also test the cutoff at the top of travel and the overhead shutoff bar on overhead-style units — the bar that stops the lift before a tall van’s roof meets the crossbeam. Roughly a quarter of the shops we visit have a shutoff bar that has been zip-tied, bent, or bypassed. That is the single most common unsafe modification we find on car lift automotive equipment in the field, and it is a five-minute fix.

Cables, Sheaves, and the Broken-Wire Rule

Equalization cables do not hold the vehicle on a hydraulic two-post — the cylinders do that — but they keep the carriages synchronized, and a snapped cable lets one side race. On a four-post, the cables carry the load outright, and that changes the stakes entirely. Either way, the inspection is the same: wipe a rag down the full length of each cable and feel for broken strands. ALI and the manufacturers converge on the same threshold — replacement when you find broken wires within a single lay, visible corrosion, kinks, flat spots, or a diameter reduction from wear. If a rag catches, that cable comes out.

Sheaves matter as much as the cable. A sheave that no longer spins freely saws the cable instead of rolling it, and you will see the polished witness mark on the groove. We check that every sheave rotates by hand, that the cable sits in the groove and not on the flange, and that retainers are present so the cable cannot jump. Then we look at cable tension: too loose and the carriage drifts, too tight and you are pulling the columns inward. We adjust at the threaded end, count turns on both sides, and re-verify carriage level. Anchors, Concrete, and the Part Nobody Photographs

A two-post transfers everything into the slab through eight to ten wedge anchors per column. The standard that certified lifts are tested to assumes a specific minimum: typically four inches of concrete at 3,000 psi minimum for standard-capacity units, more for higher capacities, cured and reinforced, with adequate distance to any edge, expansion joint, or trench. In Dubuque and along the river, we run into older shops with slabs poured in sections over gravel, and we find lifts anchored across a control joint. That is a rejection every time. Nobody photographs anchor bolts for the shop’s Facebook page, but they are what stands between a loaded vehicle and the floor.

Our field check is simple. Torque every anchor to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench — not an impact. Look for spinners, anchors that turn without gaining torque, because those have lost their grip in the hole and need to be moved to fresh concrete with proper edge distance. Look for spalling or hairline cracking radiating out from a base plate, which tells you the concrete is failing before the steel is. Check that shims, if any, are steel and stacked no thicker than the manual allows. And verify the column is plumb, because a leaning column puts bending load into anchors that were only designed to resist shear and pullout. If the slab does not pass, we cut and pour a proper pad — it is a one-day job and it makes the difference between certified equipment and a certified-looking installation.

Building an Annual Inspection Habit That Sticks

ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the operation, inspection, and maintenance standard — calls for a documented annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector, plus daily and periodic checks by shop personnel. The daily part is easy and nobody does it: walk the bay, look for oil on the floor, look for a lift that has drifted overnight, look for a bent arm or a missing pad. Thirty seconds per bay. The periodic part is the greasing, the cable check, the anchor torque, and the fluid level. The annual part is where an outside set of eyes finds the things familiarity hides.

You get a written record per unit — serial number, capacity, findings, what we corrected, what needs parts, and a dated tag on the column. That folder is what you hand an insurance adjuster or an OSHA compliance officer, and it is what a buyer wants to see if you ever sell the business. When Repair Stops Making Sense

Sometimes the honest recommendation is replacement. We use a few triggers. If the manufacturer no longer exists and no aftermarket lock, cylinder, or carriage parts are available, the unit is a paperweight the day something structural breaks. If the columns show weld cracking at the base or the carriage rollers have worn the column channel into a taper, that is fatigue and it will not be repaired economically. If there is no ALI certification and no legible capacity or serial label, you cannot document it, which means your insurer and your inspector will keep asking. And if the total of cables, cylinders, power unit, and anchors approaches a meaningful fraction of a new certified lift, buy the new lift.
