Count the oil-and-tires jobs, the brake jobs, the suspension jobs, and the occasional restoration project. The Iowa Great Lakes region has a lot of older Butler and Morton buildings where trusses sit at 10 feet 6 inches or lower. In those shops we specify a floorplate two-post and pair it with an extended-height conversion kit if the owner is willing to notch the ceiling. If not, a mid-rise scissor lift is honestly a better answer than fighting the ceiling. We measure the bay ourselves before we quote — the number of shops that got a lift they cannot install because the trusses came in three inches lower than the drawings said is genuinely high. Get the tape measure out before the purchase order goes out.
Capacity math that actually matters for daily maintenance
Capacity numbers are the most misunderstood spec on any lift. A 10,000 pound two-post does not mean any 10,000 pound vehicle. It means 10,000 pounds distributed roughly 50/50 across the arms, with each arm rated for a share of that load. A dual-rear-wheel truck with a heavy service body up front can overload the front arms while the rear arms are still lightly loaded. Red flag two: cracked concrete around the anchor bolts on both columns, especially horizontal cracks that indicate the slab is fatigued. Red flag three: cables with visible broken strands, frayed sheathing, or heavy rust at the sheave — cables are consumables and get replaced, but the sheaves, drums, and equalizer hardware often need replacement together.
Red flag four: hydraulic seals leaking at both cylinders, which points to a cylinder rebuild or replacement on both sides plus fluid contamination in the power unit. Red flag five: safety locks that do not clearly engage on every notch. If a used car lift automotive purchase checks two or more of those boxes, walk away. We would rather quote the buyer a new lift than watch them pour four grand into a lift that is still not right at the end.
New-lift math when the shop is running six days a week
Once a shop is running six days a week with two or more technicians, the math flips hard toward new. The upgrade path — an SPO-series Rotary, a CL10 Challenger, a BendPak XPR — buys you longer arms, three-stage front arms for closer swing clearance, and better duty cycle. The cheap import at half the price buys you a headache in year three when the equalizer starts binding. We would rather sell one good lift than three bad ones. Family shops planning to hand the business down want the good lift.
Anchor patterns and slab thickness for the Iowa Great Lakes region
The Great Lakes region has a lot of older pole barns and legacy garages where the concrete was poured for tractors, not lifts. Rotary and Challenger both spec a minimum of 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 10,000 pound two-post, with 6 inches preferred for anything heavier. Anchor patterns run four bolts per column on the standard footprint. If the slab is thinner than that, we either core out and pour a proper pad under each column or step down to a mid-rise scissor lift that spreads load across a wider footprint.
The other regional issue is frost heave. Slabs poured over poorly compacted fill or without a proper vapor barrier can move a quarter inch a year in northwest Iowa. That will pull a two-post out of column plumb over five years and eventually stress the crossbar. We check plumb on every installed lift a year in, free of charge, and re-shim if needed. When a shop is planning a twenty-year lift purchase we would rather know the slab story on day one than fight the lift at year seven.
