Electric vehicle service is a new corner of the industry and it attracts a specific kind of misinformation, some from well-meaning enthusiasts and some from vendors trying to sell equipment that does not actually fit the work. Myth One: EVs Need a Special “EV Lift”

What EVs need is a lift with adequate capacity, correct arm geometry, and pad locations that match the vehicle’s factory jacking points. Every major commercial lift manufacturer already builds equipment that meets those requirements. The “EV lift” marketing label is mostly a pricing exercise, not a functional category.

What is actually true is that EVs are heavier and have different pad locations than internal-combustion vehicles. A Model Y at 4,555 lb is not radically heavier than a comparable ICE crossover, but a Rivian R1T at 7,148 lb is significantly heavier than a Ford F-150. That capacity conversation is real. But it is a capacity conversation, not an EV-lift conversation. A 12,000 or 15,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger with the correct pad set does the work. Do not pay a premium for the letters EV in a product name if the underlying spec is identical to the non-EV version.

Myth Two: Two-Post Lifts Cannot Handle EVs

This one shows up in forums constantly. The claim is that a car lift automotive with two posts cannot safely handle an EV because the battery pack is a stressed structural member and pinching it with lift arms damages the pack. The reality is more nuanced. Manufacturer pad diagrams for EVs specify factory-approved lift points that avoid the battery entirely. As long as the technician follows the diagram and uses the correct pads or pucks, a two-post lifts an EV just fine.

What gets EV batteries damaged is guessing at pad locations, using generic flat pads on vehicles that need pinch-weld cradles, or picking a spot that looks structural but is actually thin sheet metal over a battery corner. That is a training and pad-selection issue, not a two-post issue. We recommend every EV shop invest in a full set of vehicle-specific lift pads, either from the manufacturer or from a reputable aftermarket supplier. A car lift automotive setup for an EV shop should include a labeled pad kit for every make it services. That solves the safety concern without requiring exotic equipment.

Myth Three: You Need a Scissor Lift for EV Battery Drops

The scissor-lift-for-battery-drops myth is another one that costs shops money. Yes, some manufacturer service procedures call for a rolling scissor or a table lift under the battery pack during a drop. But the vehicle itself does not need to be on a scissor. The vehicle sits on the primary lift, usually a two-post or 4-post, and the battery table rolls underneath. The primary car lift automotive purchase is not the battery table. They are separate tools.

Some shop owners get sold a package that includes an oversized scissor lift as the primary bay tool and then discover it does not do wheels-off work well and does not store vehicles at all. Meanwhile they still need a battery table when the actual EV service procedure calls for one. The correct sequence for an EV shop is to buy the primary lift first, based on general service work, then add a battery table when the volume justifies it. Do not let a scissor-first pitch skew the primary purchase.

Myth Four: EV Shops Cannot Resell Used Lifts

This one comes up in exit-planning conversations. A shop owner three years in wonders whether the equipment holds any value if they close or sell. The myth says that specialty EV equipment has a tiny resale market. The reality is that a car lift automotive purchase in the commercial-brand tier holds its value regardless of what the shop primarily services. A Rotary or Challenger two-post from an EV shop is the same equipment as a Rotary or Challenger two-post from a general service shop. Buyers pay for the equipment, not the previous owner’s business model.

What actually erodes resale value is neglected maintenance, missing paperwork, and no-name brands. A five-year-old commercial-brand two-post with a documented service history and a current ALI inspection sticker sells for a healthy percentage of new. A no-name discount lift with no records sells for scrap regardless of what the shop did with it. If resale matters, buy the tier that resells and keep the paperwork clean. That is true for any shop, EV or otherwise.

Myth Five: Higher Voltage in EVs Requires Special Electrical for the Lift

Some shop owners worry that servicing high-voltage vehicles somehow changes the electrical requirements for the car lift automotive equipment itself. It does not. The lift runs on standard 208-240 volt single-phase or three-phase power, drawing 20 to 30 amps at full load. That is completely independent of the vehicle being serviced. Whether you are lifting an EV, a diesel pickup, or a 1972 Chevelle, the lift needs the same electrical service.

What is different in an EV shop is the shop-floor electrical infrastructure for charging equipment, diagnostic gear, and sometimes a battery table with its own hydraulic power unit. Those are separate circuits from the lift. First, capacity headroom for heavy pickup-truck EVs like the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning. Second, arm pad kits specific to the vehicles serviced. Third, adequate ceiling clearance because some EV SUVs are taller than their ICE equivalents. Fourth, drip control because EVs still have brake fluid, coolant, and washer fluid that can leak. Fifth, documentation for the resale window.

None of those are exotic. They are the same things any well-run service shop should think about. The EV part of the picture changes the specific pad kit and the capacity target, but not the fundamental purchase decision. Focus on the honest list and ignore the marketing noise. A shop that buys the right equipment for the actual work does not care whether the vehicle has a battery or a gas tank. The lift lifts. The tools do the work. Everything else is sales pitch.

Resale Value Realities on the Iowa-Missouri Border

The border-town shop we started this conversation with had a very specific concern about resale. He was 12 miles from Missouri and worried that if he ever sold the shop, buyers would come from either state and might not value the equipment the same way. That is a real concern for niche businesses but not for standard lift equipment. Commercial car lift automotive brands sell across all fifty states through established used-equipment channels. A well-maintained Rotary or Challenger lift lists on the same platforms whether it came from Des Moines, Kansas City, or Kirksville.

The value delta between a well-maintained commercial lift and a neglected no-name lift is not regional. It is universal. Buyers know what parts are available, what service histories are typical, and what the current used market pays. The Iowa-Missouri border is not a special market. It is the same market as everywhere else, and the same rules apply. Buy the tier that holds value, service it on schedule, keep the paperwork, and the resale takes care of itself.
