A Quad Cities dealership service manager we’ve worked with for years asked us to help redesign one of his older service bays around a new car lift, with CV axle and half-shaft work as the target job. He runs a lot of front-drive and AWD platforms in his service mix, and CV axle jobs were choking his older narrow bays because the lift arms crowded the wheel wells and there was no clean place to stage the new shaft. This piece is a technical deep-dive on the bay we designed with him — actual column spacing, actual bay dimensions, tool-wall placement, and the workflow that came out of it.

The Old Bay: What Was Wrong

The existing bay was twenty-two feet wide with a ten-thousand-pound symmetric two-post car lift centered in it. Column spacing was one hundred four inches inside-to-inside — standard for the era but tight for anything larger than a mid-size sedan. Techs were struggling to swing the front doors open on crossovers and pickups after the vehicle was on the arms. The tool cart lived along the back wall, which meant every trip for a snap-ring or a hub socket was a twenty-foot round trip. CV axle jobs that should have been ninety-minute turns were pushing two-and-a-half hours.

The service manager was mostly frustrated with the tool logistics, but the deeper issue was the bay’s proportions. Dealership service work has drifted heavier and wider over the past ten years — more crossovers, more full-size trucks, more all-wheel-drive platforms with tight tolerances around the front knuckle. A car lift bay designed for the 2005 model mix doesn’t work for the 2025 one. Our job was to re-lay out the bay from the anchor holes up, with CV axle work as the design target and the reality that his other techs would run it for general service too.

The New Layout: Twenty-Six Feet Wide With Room to Move

The new bay we designed is twenty-six feet wide, which required knocking down a partial wall between the old bay and an unused mop-sink alcove. Bay length stayed at thirty-two feet. The new car lift is a twelve-thousand-pound wide-set two-post with one hundred twelve inches inside-to-inside column spacing — eight extra inches of shoulder room compared to the old lift. That’s the difference between the tech easily opening a front door on a full-size crew cab and the tech contorting to work around it.

Column offset from the drive-in path is important too. We set the columns twelve inches off the centerline of the bay entrance so the vehicle drives straight in on a natural line, and the tech doesn’t have to steer around a column on entry. Rear arm swing clearance is eight feet from column to back wall — enough for the arms to pivot to full rear position without hitting anything. Front clearance is seven feet from column to a low tool bench, which gives arm swing forward plus space for the aligner target rack when alignment work moves into the bay.

Tool Wall and Parts Staging for CV Axle Work

The single biggest workflow gain wasn’t the car lift itself — it was the tool wall. We rebuilt the bay’s long wall into a pegboard-and-cart system with the CV-specific tools within an arm’s reach of the front arm position: axle nut sockets, hub sockets, snap-ring pliers, CV boot clamp pliers, hammer and pin punch set, torque wrench, and the shop’s dead-blow. Everything the tech reaches for during a CV axle job is within four steps of the vehicle. The old bay had them at the back wall, twenty feet away.

Parts staging matters as much as tools. We added a rolling shelf cart two feet wide by four feet deep with a padded top that lives just outside the bay entrance. The new CV shaft comes out of the parts department onto that cart, along with the axle nut, hub bolts, and any new boot clamps. The old shaft comes off the vehicle and goes onto the cart’s bottom shelf for return. One trip to parts per job instead of three. On a busy Tuesday, that’s twenty minutes back per tech, per job. The car lift didn’t buy that time — the layout around it did.

Column Spacing: Why 112 Inches Beats 104

Column spacing is the dimension most shops don’t think enough about. A hundred-and-four-inch spacing works fine on a mid-size car, tight on a full-size sedan, and cramped on an SUV or truck. A hundred-and-twelve-inch spacing works great on all three. The extra eight inches moves the doors free of the column arc when they open, gives the tech shoulder room to lean into a wheel well with a torque wrench, and lets a bigger jack roll under the arms if needed. The car lift itself costs a little more — wider columns, longer overhead crossbar — but the bay works better for a decade.

The manufacturer’s spec sheet on our recommended twelve-thousand-pound wide-set two-post gives one hundred twelve inches inside-to-inside as a factory option. Some manufacturers offer up to one hundred twenty inches as a special-order spread for heavy-duty dealership environments. That’s overkill for passenger work but useful for medium-duty. For this Quad Cities dealership doing predominantly passenger and light-truck service, one twelve was the pick. If they scaled into fleet or medium-duty box trucks, we’d revisit and possibly go to a heavy-duty four-post or a mobile column setup instead.

Air, Power, and Lighting: The Utilities That Enable Speed

The new bay has a drop from the overhead trunk line for air, three quick-connect stations at three different heights so the tech doesn’t have to walk to plug in an impact when the vehicle is up. The old bay had a single air drop at floor level. Small change, big daily impact. Power is on a dedicated 40-amp 220-volt circuit, isolated from the lift-lift bay next door so a simultaneous cycle doesn’t dim the shop lights. This is the electrical mistake most dealerships inherit from older builds — too many big draws on shared circuits.

Lighting is LED shop panels at 120 foot-candles at the fender-well height, plus a movable under-hood LED trouble light on a magnetic base. CV axle work involves reading torque marks and looking for splines and clocking positions; light matters. Under the raised vehicle, we added two 4-foot LED strip lights mounted at nine feet, angled to bounce light off the underbody without shining directly into the tech’s eyes. The bay is bright without being blinding — a distinction that matters after eight hours. A car lift bay this well-lit does not exist by accident.

Workflow Flow: Drive In to Drive Out

Here’s the workflow we designed against. Vehicle drives in on a natural line, tech stops it centered between the columns using a floor marker. Tech places the arms, verifies frame contact points, and raises to knee height for a first inspection. Second lift to overhead, wheels come off with the pre-staged impact and lug socket. New CV shaft comes off the parts cart, tech works through the removal and install standing up. Torque check, wheels back on, lower to knee height, verify axle-nut torque, then to the floor. Drive out. The car lift never becomes the bottleneck.

Timed on the first three CV axle jobs in the new bay, the tech averaged one hour ten minutes per side — down from an average of two hours ten in the old bay. That’s a real productivity gain and it came from the layout, not just the equipment. When we quote a dealership on a new lift, we always ask to see the bay drawing.
