There is no single “best” lift, only a best fit for your ceiling, your slab, your vehicle mix, and your workflow. This 2026 refresh walks the categories the way we walk them with a customer on the phone.
The four questions we always ask first
Before any car lift buyers guide can recommend a specific unit, we ask four questions. What are you lifting — passenger cars, light trucks, medium-duty, EVs? What is your ceiling height at the truss, not just at the peak? What is your slab — thickness, PSI, and how old? What power is available — 120V, single-phase 208-240V, or three-phase? Those four answers eliminate more than half of the catalog on their own. If you cannot answer them, that is your first homework assignment before you shop.
Two-post lifts
Every car lift buyers guide starts here because two-post lifts are the general-service lift for most independent shops. They lift the vehicle by four contact pads at the manufacturer’s lift points, and they leave the wheels hanging free — which is what you want for brakes, tires, exhaust, driveline, and general undercar work. Capacities run 9,000 to 15,000 lb for common shop use, and 18,000 lb and up for heavy-duty. Symmetric two-posts (columns face straight across) are simple and cheap. Asymmetric two-posts (columns rotated 30 degrees) let you open a car door without hitting the column and are the right pick for any shop that sees a mix of vehicle lengths. Four-post lifts
Four-post lifts are drive-on lifts. The vehicle sits on two runways and the lift raises the whole thing. That makes four-posts ideal for two things: alignment work (with slip plates and turnplates on the runways) and long-duration parking or storage. For general service, a four-post needs a sliding bridge jack to let the wheels come off — but with a bridge jack, a four-post is a superb tire and brake lift with easier vehicle loading than a two-post. Capacities run 7,000 to 30,000 lb; home-storage units are typically 8,000 to 9,000 lb. See our four-post buying guide and four-post collection.
Scissor lifts and mid-rise lifts
Scissor lifts fold into a low profile at rest and rise on a scissor linkage. Full-rise scissor lifts (with pad arms and safety locks) can replace a two-post for tires, brakes, and exhaust in shops with limited ceiling — and they leave the bay floor clear when lowered. Mid-rise scissor lifts top out around 48 inches and are the right tool for tire, brake, and detail work when you do not need to walk under the vehicle. Mobile column lifts
Mobile column lifts are individual wireless columns you position around a heavy vehicle — typically class 6-8 trucks, transit buses, or fire apparatus. They come in matched sets of four, six, or eight columns. Per-column capacity is 12,000 to 19,000 lb, and total set capacity can exceed 150,000 lb. They replace an in-ground heavy-duty lift for shops that cannot pour a pit, and they follow the truck home when your fleet spreads across multiple locations. Overkill for a car shop, essential for a truck shop.
In-ground lifts
In-ground lifts hide the mechanism below the floor. Two big families: single-post inground (the classic Rotary-style with one round column, mostly historical) and modern side-by-side inground (two hydraulic pistons under the wheels, wide range of vehicle lengths). Ingrounds keep the bay floor completely clear when the vehicle is down, which is why dealers and high-end shops keep buying them. They also require a pit, drainage, and a complete slab job — so they are a new-build decision, rarely a retrofit. And by policy, our shop repairs Stertil-Koni ingrounds; we do not sell them. Ceiling, slab, and power
Ceiling. A two-post lift needs roughly the lifted vehicle’s height plus at least 12 inches of clearance above the top rail, on overhead models. Floorplate two-posts let you fit a taller vehicle under a lower ceiling. Four-posts need vehicle height plus runway height plus the safety-lock travel. Scissor and mid-rise are the friendliest to low ceilings. Slab. Most 9K-12K two-posts want at least 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete; heavier units want 6 inches or more. If your slab is thinner, you pour a pad. Power. Most single-phase 208-240V lifts pull 20-30 amps at start. Three-phase gets you faster cycle times and a smaller motor. Ask before you order.
Pick a brand you can service
The best car lift buyers guide advice we give — and the one every honest car lift buyers guide should lead with — is boring: buy a lift from a manufacturer with a real US parts network, and buy through an installer who is going to still be here in ten years. A lift that saves $1,200 on the invoice but has no US parts channel becomes an expensive story after the first breakdown.
