Capacity is not the first spec to shop
Every catalog leads with capacity — 9,000, 10,000, 12,000, 15,000 pounds — and buyers reflexively size up because “more is better.” It isn’t. Capacity determines the column footprint, the base plate size, the anchor pattern, and the price band, and once you go past 10,000 pounds on a car lift meant for passenger vehicles and light trucks, you’re paying for reserve capacity you’ll never use. What a body shop foreman doing restoration work actually needs to shop first is the arm reach, the arm-length pad style, and the drive-through clearance.
Arm reach determines whether the lift can catch pinch welds on cars with unusual wheelbase geometry — a common issue on classic restorations and heavily modified vehicles. Pad style determines whether you can catch frame rails on trucks and body-on-frame classics without stacking blocks. Drive-through clearance determines whether an oversized project car with wide fenders will fit between the columns at all. Buy the capacity you need, not the capacity that impresses the catalog. Our advice is 10,000 pounds for almost every body shop, 12,000 pounds if you have any real full-size truck volume, and stay under 15,000 unless you’re doing medium-duty commercial work.
Symmetric versus asymmetric — pick by the vehicle mix, not the marketing
Symmetric two-post lifts have equal-length arms front and back; asymmetric lifts have shorter arms in the front and rotated columns so the vehicle sits with the door line at the columns for easier entry and exit. For a restoration and metal-work shop, the choice depends almost entirely on what you’re lifting. If most of your work is on unibody passenger cars — sedans, coupes, and their era-appropriate classics — asymmetric is almost always the right answer.
If you regularly work on trucks, SUVs, and body-on-frame vehicles that have long wheelbases and center-of-gravity closer to the middle, symmetric handles them better because the balance is more forgiving. A Cedar Rapids shop with a mixed portfolio will often go with what we call a “true versa-symmetric” configuration — arms that can be positioned in either mode without changing the lift itself. Rotary and Challenger both make versa-symmetric options that cost a modest premium over pure symmetric or pure asymmetric. For a body shop working a diverse queue, that flexibility is worth the small upcharge. This is one of the car lift specs where the right answer depends entirely on your actual workflow, not on the manufacturer’s marketing preference.
Two-post, four-post, or scissor for body work
The three lift categories serve different body-shop workflows. Two-post is the workhorse for restoration and metal fabrication because the wheels hang free — you can access the underside, the wheel wells, the rocker panels, and the frame rails with nothing in the way. Four-post is better for storage, alignment, and any work where the wheels need to stay loaded, but for body work it puts runways in your way. Scissor and mid-rise are excellent for pinch-weld work at a comfortable working height but limit how high you can raise the vehicle for undercarriage access.

That combination handles everything a typical restoration shop throws at it and doesn’t require the compromises of a single-lift strategy. Match the lift to the workflow, not to what the neighbor has.
Trade-in and resale value — the numbers we actually see
Used car lift market pricing in the Iowa and Upper Midwest region is remarkably consistent, and the pattern is worth knowing before you buy new. A well-maintained two-post from a Tier-1 manufacturer — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak — typically resells at fifty to sixty percent of new price at year five, forty to fifty percent at year ten, and thirty to forty percent at year fifteen if the cables have been maintained. A Tier-2 or off-brand two-post depreciates much faster and can be nearly unsellable by year ten.
What drives resale is documentation. A lift with an install record, annual inspection paperwork, and a clean cable-replacement history sells at the high end of that range. A lift with none of that documentation sells at the low end regardless of brand. For a body-shop owner planning to upgrade in five to seven years, buying a Tier-1 brand and keeping the paperwork tight can recover thousands at trade-in. Buying a cheap import to save on the front end usually costs money on the back end because the resale value is negligible. That documentation habit is the single biggest driver of what a used lift is worth.
Install requirements that will change your quote
The number in the catalog is the lift price, not the installed price. Body shops in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding Corridor area often have older buildings with slab thickness that predates modern lift standards, and that’s the single most common install-cost surprise. Manufacturer specs typically require four to six inches of properly cured concrete at a minimum compressive strength. If your slab is thinner or older, the install may require a saw-cut and a pour, or an entirely repoured pad in the bay.
The other install variables that move a quote are ceiling clearance, power supply, and column spread. A restoration shop that lifts trucks and vans needs enough ceiling to fully extend the lift with the vehicle on top — typically twelve feet or more for a two-post, less for a mid-rise. Power supply is usually 220-volt single-phase for a two-post but three-phase for many four-post commercial units, and running new wiring from a distant panel adds cost. Column spread affects wide-body work and drive-through clearance. We survey all of this on site before quoting an install so the shop doesn’t get surprised on day one. Ask any installer to do the same.
Warranty and service networks — buy where you can be supported
A car lift buyer’s guide that doesn’t cover the service network is missing the most important part. A Tier-1 lift with no local installer is worse than a Tier-2 lift with a stocking installer in the same state. When something breaks — and something always eventually breaks — the shop needs parts on the shelf within driving distance and a technician who has service-trained on the exact model.
In Iowa, that means checking whether the manufacturer has an ALI-certified installer within a few hundred miles. Rotary and Challenger both have strong Iowa-Illinois coverage.
