A two-post lift’s cables are a wear item by design. They flex around sheaves thousands of times a year, they pick up grit off the shop floor, and they carry loads that would stop most people cold if they thought about it too hard. Manufacturers rate these cables with a healthy safety margin, but that margin erodes with every broken strand, every kink, and every bit of surface rust that gets ground into the wire during operation. Car lift cable inspection and replacement isn’t optional maintenance — it’s the difference between a controlled service life and an unplanned failure while a customer’s truck is twelve feet in the air.

Check where the cable wraps around the sheave and where it terminates at the anchor — those two points take the most stress and wear first.

Don’t skip the equalizer cable or the sheaves themselves. A cable can look fine while the sheave it rides on has developed a groove or a flat spot that’s chewing up the wire from the inside of the wrap. We also check cable tension and equalization on every service call, because uneven tension puts extra load on one side and accelerates wear exactly where you don’t want it.
