A plow truck or a dump body rig sitting on a lift for exhaust work is a lot heavier and more awkward than a passenger car, and that extra load cycles through the cables every single time a vehicle goes up and down. The problem is that cable wear isn’t always visible from a quick glance. Manufacturers publish general guidance, but a real replacement interval has to account for how the lift is actually used. A car lift running one or two vehicles a day in a light-duty shop can often go longer between cable replacements than a fleet bay cycling trucks constantly through winter. As a baseline, we tell fleet managers to plan on a full visual inspection every 90 days and a full cable replacement on a two to four year cycle depending on load and duty cycle, sooner if your shop sees heavy salt exposure.

Don’t wait for a failure to reset your interval. If you replace one cable in a set because it failed inspection, replace the full set on that lift at the same time. Mismatched cable age means uneven stretch and uneven load sharing between the equalizer cables, which accelerates wear on the newer cable too. The Real Cost of Skipping Inspections

Beyond the catastrophic failure scenario, worn car lift cables cause slower, less obvious problems too. Uneven cables make a lift settle unevenly, which throws off alignment work and can make a truck rock on the lift arms during driveline service. That’s a productivity hit every single day the lift is in that condition, even before anything breaks. Treating cable inspection as a real line item in your maintenance budget, rather than an afterthought, pays for itself the first time it prevents a shutdown.

Overhead vs Baseplate Cable Runs in Fleet Bays

Northwest Iowa fleet garages run both overhead and baseplate two-post configurations, and the cable routing is different enough that inspection habits need to change with it. Overhead lifts route cables through the crossbar at the top of the columns, which keeps them out of the way of tall trucks but also out of easy eyesight during a quick walk-through. Baseplate lifts run cables closer to floor level, which is more convenient to inspect but also more exposed to road salt, grit, and debris tracked in on tires.

If your bay handles high-clearance trucks or equipment with tall exhaust stacks, overhead routing is usually the right call, but it means you have to deliberately climb up or use a mirror to check cable condition rather than relying on a glance. Baseplate configurations need more frequent cleaning around the cable runs since they collect grime faster. Either way, the inspection standard doesn’t change, only the access method does.

Training Your Techs to Catch Problems Early

The fastest way to extend the life of your car lift cables and catch failures before they happen is to get your own technicians looking at them daily, not just during a scheduled inspection. A thirty second glance at the cable runs every time someone raises a truck catches obvious problems, like a cable riding outside its sheave groove, long before a formal quarterly inspection would.
