Certification refers to the lift itself meeting a manufacturing standard — in the U.S., that’s ANSI/ALI ALCTV, the standard automotive lift manufacturers design and test their equipment against. A lift with an ALI Gold Label was certified at the factory. Inspection is the ongoing part: an annual (at minimum) checkup performed by a qualified individual to confirm the lift still meets safe operating condition, following the ALI/ALOIM inspection checklist.
A lot of Iowa shop owners think buying a certified lift is a one-time box to check. It isn’t. A lift that was ALI-certified in 2015 with worn cables, a cracked weld, or a bypassed safety lock today is not a safe lift, regardless of what label is bolted to the column. Insurance carriers and OSHA inspectors care about the current condition, not the original spec sheet. That’s why we tell every customer the same thing: certification gets you in the door, inspection keeps you legal to stay there. Who Is Qualified to Perform the Inspection
ALI standards call for inspection by a “qualified lift inspector” — someone trained specifically on lift mechanics, hydraulics, and the ALOIM checklist, not just a general maintenance tech. This matters because lift failures aren’t always obvious. A tech who services engines all day might not catch a hairline crack in an arm restraint or know that a specific cable fraying pattern means immediate replacement, not “keep an eye on it.”

We also look at things that don’t show up on a generic checklist but matter in Iowa specifically: rust and corrosion from road salt tracked in during winter, concrete anchor pull-out in older slabs that weren’t rated for the load, and arm pin wear that’s accelerated by heavy daily-use shops. A lift running three shifts a day at a dealership wears differently than one used a few times a week at a small independent shop, and a good inspector adjusts what they scrutinize based on that use pattern rather than running the exact same checklist blind.
How Often You Actually Need One
ALI recommends annual inspections at minimum, but that’s a floor, not a target. High-volume shops, fleet maintenance bays, and lifts older than ten years should be inspected more frequently — we typically suggest every six months for equipment running heavy daily cycles. If a lift has been sitting idle for an extended period, been moved to a new location, or been in any kind of incident (dropped load, hard stop, visible damage), it needs an inspection before the next use, not at the next scheduled interval.

We flag the specific failure, quote the repair, and in most cases can get parts ordered and installed fast enough that the lift is back in certified service within a week.
The bigger risk is ignoring a failed inspection and running the lift anyway. That’s the scenario that turns a workers’ comp claim into a lawsuit, and it’s also the fastest way to get your general liability policy dropped after a claim. If a lift fails, treat it as a repair-or-replace decision, not a suggestion.
Certification Records and Why Insurance Cares
Every inspection we perform comes with a written report: date, inspector name, checklist results, any repairs made, and a pass/fail status. Keep these on file — most insurance carriers and OSHA auditors want to see the last one to two years of records, not just a verbal assurance that “we check it regularly.” Shops that can’t produce documentation often get treated as if no inspection ever happened, which can affect claims after an accident even if the lift itself was fine.

Buying Used? Certification Gets Complicated Fast
Used lifts are where certification and inspection questions get murky fastest. A used lift may carry an original ALI label, but that label says nothing about how it was maintained, whether it’s been moved (which can affect anchor integrity), or what shape the cables and hydraulics are in today. We’ve inspected used lifts that looked fine on the surface but had structural issues that would have failed immediately under a real load test.
