Wheels-free access, symmetric-loaded columns, tight bay footprint (roughly 12 feet wide, 6 feet fore-aft), and quick load/unload — every bay in every general-repair shop uses one. Exhaust and driveline access, which is what the Urbandale shop wanted for the second bay, is easiest on a 2-post because nothing is under the car except air. Suspension work, brake service, transmission drops, and any wheels-off task is the 2-post’s job.
The downside: no drive-on convenience. Every vehicle has to be positioned precisely, the arms swung under to the pick points, and the pads set. 4-Post Configuration: Where It Wins
A 12,000 lb drive-on 4-post car lift wins on three specific workflows: alignment work with slip plates and turn plates, long-duration diagnostic where the vehicle sits up for hours between tests, and heavy-truck work where the extra capacity matters. Drive-on is instant — the customer or tech drives up the ramps, sets the parking brake, and locks the safety hooks in under 30 seconds. No arm swing, no pad placement.
The trade-off is wheels-on access. If the tech needs to remove a wheel, the 4-post needs a rolling jack (a hydraulic jack that rides in the runways and lifts one axle wheels-free). Rolling jacks are $1,200 to $2,500 depending on capacity and quality. Add that to the 4-post total. For the Urbandale shop, we specced two rolling jacks with the 4-post because their alignment tech runs alignment tests wheels-free at the front, then wheels-down at the rear.
Footprint and Bay Efficiency
Bay footprint is where the comparison gets sharp. A 2-post occupies 12 feet by 6 feet of floor. Everything around and above is workable space. Payback is faster on the 2-post in a general-repair shop because it does more billable work per hour. Payback on the 4-post is slower per cycle but higher per bay-hour when the shop bills alignment work at premium rates.
