Start With Where the Oil Is Actually Coming From

We tell every customer to wipe the cylinder completely dry, run the lift through a full up-and-down cycle, and then look at it again with a flashlight before any oil has a chance to spread. Nine times out of ten, the leak point is either the top seal where the piston rod exits the cylinder tube, the base fitting where the hydraulic line connects, or a weep hole partway down the cylinder body.

Check the Piston Rod for Damage First
Before you assume you need a full cylinder replacement, run your fingers along the exposed piston rod for nicks, rust, or scoring. Iowa shops deal with a lot of road salt tracked in on undercarriages, and that grit works its way past the wiper seal and pits the chrome plating on the rod. Once the rod surface is damaged, no new seal will hold for long because the seal is riding directly on that pitted metal every time the lift cycles.

Before you pull a cylinder, trace every fitting from the power unit down to the cylinder base and check each one for wetness with a clean rag. Tighten any fitting that shows seepage and retest. If it persists at the same spot after tightening, the fitting or hose itself needs replacement, not just a wrench turn.
Single-Post vs Twin-Cylinder Systems Behave Differently
How you approach a car lift cylinder leaking diagnosis changes depending on whether you’re working on a single-cylinder inground lift, a twin-cylinder two post, or a four post with cables and a slave cylinder. On a two post, a leak on one side often shows up as the lift drifting unevenly or one arm sitting lower than the other after sitting overnight. That drift is your clue even before you spot visible fluid, because it tells you which cylinder is bypassing internally.
Four post lifts with hydraulic cylinders under the runways are trickier to inspect because the leak point is often hidden beneath the deck. If you notice oil on the shop floor under a four post but can’t immediately find the source, check the cylinder and its base plate first — that’s the most common hidden leak location on these units, and it’s often mistaken for a slow drip from the power unit instead.
What a Weep Hole Is Really Telling You
We mentioned weep holes earlier, but they deserve their own explanation because so many shop owners misread them. Most single-acting lift cylinders have a small hole partway up the barrel specifically so that internal seal failures show up as visible drips instead of pressure building somewhere it shouldn’t. If you see steady dripping from that hole, the cylinder’s internal piston seal has worn out and is allowing fluid to bypass from the pressure side to the return side.
This isn’t a leak you can tighten your way out of — it requires either an internal seal kit installed by someone comfortable disassembling the cylinder, or a replacement unit. The upside is that a weep-hole leak is a very clean diagnosis: there’s no guessing about hoses or fittings, because the design is telling you directly which internal component failed.
Fluid Type and Contamination Matter More Than People Think
Not every leak is purely mechanical. Using the wrong hydraulic fluid, mixing fluid types, or running a lift on old, contaminated oil accelerates seal wear dramatically. Water contamination from a humid shop or a lift stored outdoors can cause seals to swell and lose their sealing edge years before they should fail. If you’ve replaced seals once already and the same cylinder is leaking again within a year, look hard at your fluid before blaming the parts.
