An overlanding builder in Urbandale called us a few months ago because his car lift had started dropping a slow trail of hydraulic fluid across his shop floor and he could not find a service company willing to look at it. The lift was an older two-post from a brand that had left the market, the cylinder rod was slick with oil, and his main service line — wheel bearing packs and axle rebuilds on lifted trucks — had ground to a stop. This case study walks through how we diagnosed the leak, sourced the seal kit, rebuilt the cylinder, and got him back to lifting a fully-built Tacoma the same week the call came in.

The call: a car lift leaking from an unknown cylinder
The customer described a slow drip from the top of the cylinder rod every time the lift raised. Fluid pooled on the platen and dripped down the post. He had topped off the reservoir twice in a week and was watching his hydraulic tank get emptier. The lift was a discontinued off-brand two-post from probably fifteen years ago, no manufacturer to call, no service network, and no seal kit at any of the usual parts warehouses. He had already tried three service companies and gotten variations of “we don’t work on that brand.”
We do. What we do first on an orphan car lift is measure. Rod diameter, bore, stroke, gland-nut style, and any port dimensions. We ask for photos of the cylinder head and the piston (if he can get eyes on the piston with a scope). With those five numbers we can usually match a seal kit from Chief, Prince, or Grainger’s industrial cylinder aftermarket. The kit almost never comes labeled for the customer’s lift brand. It comes labeled by size, and the size is what matters.
Diagnosing the leak: rod, gland, or piston
Hydraulic cylinder leaks show up in three places and each one tells you something different. Fluid dripping from the top of the rod is a rod-wiper or rod-seal failure — cheap to fix, most common. Fluid pooling around the gland nut with no drip is a gland O-ring failure — also cheap. Fluid inside the cylinder that lets the rod creep down under load is a piston-seal failure — slightly harder, requires opening the barrel. On this lift the customer’s photos and description matched rod-wiper failure, which was the good news.
To confirm, we had him wipe the rod dry, cycle the lift once, and photograph the rod at the top of the stroke. Bright fresh oil at the wiper-lip location means rod wiper. A stripe of oil down the rod means the wiper is torn and a larger rod seal is also probably compromised. In his case it was both — a torn wiper and a stripe, which meant the full rod-seal set was gone and the piston seal was probably borderline. We ordered the full kit rather than piecemeal a repair that would need us back in six months.
Sourcing the seal kit for an orphan car lift
When the original manufacturer is out of business the trick is to match the cylinder mechanically, not by brand name. His cylinder measured a two-inch bore, one-and-a-half-inch rod, and used a threaded gland with a set-screw retainer. That cross-references to a standard industrial-cylinder seal package that Chief and Prince both make in their aftermarket line. Two-day shipping to Ames, we picked up the kit on our way to his shop, and the total parts cost was well under a hundred dollars.
The cost story on an orphan-lift rebuild is almost always dominated by labor, not parts. Seal kits for common cylinder sizes are inexpensive. What costs money is the shop time to pull the cylinder, disassemble the gland, remove the piston, replace the seals, and reassemble to the right torque. On this lift we scheduled a half-day at the customer’s shop, which was reasonable because his shop had good access to the columns and the cylinder came out cleanly. On a lift with an inaccessible cylinder the labor doubles.
The rebuild at the shop
We drove down to Urbandale in the morning, brought a clean workbench with us in the van, and pulled the cylinder in about ninety minutes. Gland nut off, piston out, old seals in the trash. We wiped down every internal surface with clean hydraulic fluid, inspected the rod for scoring (the number-one thing that kills a fresh rebuild — a scored rod will chew up a new wiper inside a month), and confirmed the bore was mirror-smooth. All clean. New wiper, new rod seal, new piston seal, new gland O-ring. Torqued the gland to spec, bench-tested the cylinder for smooth stroke, and reinstalled.
Bleeding the system after a cylinder rebuild is the part most DIY rebuilders skip and it is the part that most often causes callbacks. Trapped air in a hydraulic lift makes the rod “stair-step” on the way up — a stutter that feels alarming and can indicate other problems if you don’t know it is just air. We bled through the lowering valve about six cycles until the stutter went away, then ran three full-height cycles empty and one with a light test load. Clean lift, clean lower, no leak, no drip. Total time on-site: about four hours.
Back to the wheel-bearing workflow
The customer’s main service line is wheel-bearing service on overlanded trucks — Tacomas with 33s, 4Runners with rear-locker upgrades, Jeeps with 37s and lifts. That is work where the vehicle stays on the lift for six to ten hours while the tech pulls the hub, presses out the bearing, presses in the new one, torques the axle nut to a truck-specific spec, and reinstalls. If the car lift is not stable and quiet under load for that whole shift, the tech’s productivity collapses. A creeping or drifting cylinder means he checks the lift every hour instead of every four.
After the rebuild the customer put a fully-built 4Runner on the lift the next morning and ran a full front-hub service. No drift, no drip, no stutter. He called us at the end of the day to tell us the shop was back to normal. That’s the payoff on a proper rebuild — not just the leak stopped, but the whole workflow around the lift got back to trusting the equipment. If he’d have been paying downtime cost for a week waiting on parts through the wrong channel, that lost-labor number would have been several times the cost of our visit.
Rebuild kit vs. replacement cylinder: when to do which
Rule of thumb: rebuild if the rod is clean and the bore is smooth. Replace if the rod is pitted, scored, or bent, or if the bore has corrosion. On this car lift the rod was clean, so rebuild made sense. Replacement cylinders for common two-post lifts run several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on brand and stock; a rebuild kit is typically under a hundred and the labor is similar. If the rod is bad you have to replace regardless — a new seal on a bad rod will fail again in weeks, and you’ve paid twice.

What we’d tell any overlander with a leaking lift
Do not ignore the drip. A slow leak turns into a fast leak, a fast leak turns into a dropped vehicle, and a dropped vehicle is a bad way to find out you should have called someone six months ago. Get the lift measured, get the leak source diagnosed, and either rebuild or replace within the same service window. The cost of a rebuild is trivial compared to the cost of the lift itself and trivial compared to a week of shop downtime.
