A Waukee-area RV and trailer service shop called us in March last year about installing their first commercial-grade car lift. They mostly worked on Class-C motorhome chassis and pickup-trailer combos, and they wanted the ability to do alignment work in-house instead of subbing it out. We spent an hour on the phone spec’ing the right lift for their bay, and this piece is the year-one story that followed, from install day through the day their hydraulic cylinder started weeping and we walked them through a rebuild. Month One: Install Day and the First Alignment

The Waukee shop chose a 15,000-pound commercial 2-post car lift with three-stage arms and rolling jacks for wheel-free alignment work. Install day took our two-man crew a full day plus about two hours of setup the morning after. The slab in their bay was five inches with adequate rebar cover, and the anchor pattern went in cleanly on the first pour of the epoxy set. By the end of install week they had done their first alignment on a Class-C motorhome front end, and the tech reported the lift felt solid under the additional length of the RV chassis. That’s the honest month-one experience for a well-planned install.

The one hiccup was a minor leveling difference between the two columns that showed up on the first cycle. Our installer had left a factory shim out under the driver-side column, and the vehicle sat about three-eighths of an inch off level at full rise. We came back the next day, jacked the column, added the shim, and re-torqued. That kind of small fix is normal on a fresh car lift install, and it’s the reason we recommend a follow-up visit two weeks after commissioning. If you install yourself, plan for a small re-level in the first month. It’s not a defect; it’s how heavy steel settles into a new anchor pattern.

Months Two Through Four: Learning the Lift

Once the lift was in and stable, the shop went through a learning curve that every new car lift owner goes through. The techs got faster at pad placement, the rolling jacks got their first serious workout on a triple-axle trailer, and the shop discovered they wanted a second set of stack blocks for the taller RV frames. We shipped the extra blocks and the shop was fully productive by month three. Alignment throughput on their fleet work doubled compared to when they were subbing it out, which was the whole point of the investment.

Alignment work is hard on any lift because the vehicle sits at working height for extended periods, sometimes an hour or more per rack. That duty cycle doesn’t hurt the lift, but it does highlight any small pressure drift in the hydraulic system. In months three and four, the shop noticed the lift would settle about a quarter inch over a forty-five-minute alignment. That’s within factory spec for most hydraulic 2-posts, but it’s worth knowing, because if you’re working to alignment tolerances tighter than a quarter inch, you either engage the mechanical locks (which we recommend on every alignment) or you re-raise every fifteen minutes. The shop opted for locks, which is the correct answer.

Month Six: A Small Leak Appears at the Cylinder Base

Sometime around month six, the Waukee shop called us because they noticed a small oil dampness at the base of the driver-side cylinder. It wasn’t dripping; it was more like a slight film that reappeared after every wipe-down. This is the classic first sign of a rod seal weep, and it’s the most common car lift service item we handle in the first year of ownership. Rod seals live in a hostile environment, and a small amount of weep in year one is often normal, but the shop was right to call rather than wait.

We asked them to send us photos of the cylinder, the fitting connections, and the reservoir, and we walked through the diagnosis over the phone. The fitting connections were tight, the reservoir was full, and the weep was clearly coming from the rod seal at the top of the cylinder body. That’s a seal issue, not a hose or fitting issue, and the fix is a factory seal kit that includes the rod wiper, primary seal, and back-up ring. Kits for the common commercial 2-post cylinders run under a couple hundred dollars, and we ship them from our Ames warehouse the same day the order goes in.

Month Seven: The Seal Rebuild Itself

The Waukee shop had a tech comfortable with hydraulic work, so they opted to rebuild the cylinder in-house rather than have us come out. We shipped the seal kit and a printed instruction sheet with the specific torque values and seal orientation for their car lift model. The rebuild process is straightforward for anyone who’s done cylinder work before: fully lower the lift, tie off the arms, disconnect the hose, unbolt the cylinder rod end from the carriage, extend the cylinder fully by hand, remove the gland nut, pull the piston, and swap the seals in the correct orientation.

The whole job took their tech about three hours the first time, including cleanup and refilling the reservoir with fresh AW32 hydraulic oil. If you’ve never done cylinder work, we quote a service visit at a fixed rate that includes the kit, the labor, and the fluid, and it’s a half-day for our tech from arrival to test cycle. Either way, the cylinder came back sealed tight and the shop hasn’t seen a drop of weep since. This is not a scary repair; it’s a routine service item, and understanding it up front removes a lot of anxiety for first-year owners.

Month Nine: The Rolling Jack Reservoir

Around month nine, the shop had one more small event: the rolling jacks started acting sluggish on the second stroke, taking about twice as long to reach the pinch weld height as they had on install day. This is almost always a low-fluid issue on rolling jacks, and it was for them too. The shop refilled the jack reservoirs, purged air from the lines, and the jacks were back to spec in about forty-five minutes. This is worth mentioning in a first-year story because rolling jacks are often forgotten in the maintenance schedule, and they use a small volume of oil that shrinks a bit as the seals settle.

We tell every new car lift owner to check the rolling jack reservoir at month three and month nine of the first year, and then annually after that. It takes five minutes and it prevents the sluggish behavior that makes techs blame the lift when it’s actually a $10 pint of oil. Alignment shops especially benefit from this habit because the rolling jacks see heavy use every time a vehicle comes in for a rack setup. Month Twelve: The Annual Inspection

At the twelve-month mark, we did the shop’s first annual ANSI inspection. Everything passed cleanly: cylinder seals holding pressure, cable tension in spec (the shop had chosen an overhead configuration), mechanical locks engaging and releasing crisply, anchor bolts still at torque, arm pins in good condition, and all safety labels legible. The inspection took about ninety minutes and produced a documented report the shop keeps on file for their insurance carrier and for any OSHA-adjacent questions about their alignment work.

The lesson from this first year is that a well-installed commercial car lift is a low-maintenance piece of capital equipment. One seal rebuild, one rolling jack top-off, and one annual inspection is not a lot of service for something they cycled more than a thousand times in twelve months. The shop’s total year-one service cost was under five hundred dollars including our labor and the seal kit. That’s radically cheaper than the alignment work they used to sub out, and it’s the honest number to hold in your head when you’re calculating whether a car lift makes financial sense for a small shop.
