A leaking or bypassing cylinder is one of the most common failures we see on lifts that have been in service ten years or more, and it’s also one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. Before you pull a single bolt, you need to know whether the cylinder is actually the problem, what you’re going to measure, and what the lift is going to do when the pressure comes off. That’s what we’ll walk through here, based on what our crew runs into in the field.

Confirm the cylinder is actually the failure
External leaks are easy. If fluid is running down the outside of the barrel or weeping from the rod gland every time the lift comes up, you’ve found it. What trips people up is internal bypass — the piston seal has gone soft, so fluid slips past under load and the lift settles slowly with no visible leak anywhere. We’ve seen shops replace a power unit, a lowering valve, and a full set of hoses chasing a drift that was coming from a worn piston seal the whole time. The tell is behavior under load: park a heavy vehicle on it, mark the arm height with tape, and check it in an hour. If it drops with the lowering valve closed and no external wetness, suspect the cylinder.
The other half of diagnosis is ruling out the cheap stuff first. A lowering valve holding a piece of grit will bleed a lift down just like a bad cylinder, and it costs a fraction as much to fix. Same with a leaking flow control or a hose fitting that only weeps under full pressure. Our techs pull the valve, clean it, and re-test before they commit to a cylinder. Get the measurements right before you order
Almost every wrong-part return we handle comes down to skipped measurements. Brand and model alone aren’t enough, because manufacturers revised cylinder designs mid-production run and the same model number can take two or three different units depending on the year. What we need to identify a cylinder is bore diameter, rod diameter, retracted center-to-center pin length, stroke, port size and location, and the mounting style on both ends — clevis, cross tube, trunnion, or threaded. A photo of each end goes a long way too. If the lift has a data plate with a serial number, start there; that plus a couple of confirming dimensions usually gets us to a definite answer.
Measure the retracted length with the lift fully down and the cylinder unloaded if you can. Stroke can be calculated from the difference between fully retracted and fully extended pin centers, but if the lift won’t cycle, measure the exposed rod and add what’s buried. Note the port thread — NPT versus SAE straight thread with an O-ring matters, and adapters introduce leak points you don’t want on a pressure line. Write it all down on paper at the lift instead of trusting memory back in the office. Replace, reseal, or rebuild?
Not every leaking cylinder needs to be thrown away. If the barrel bore is clean, the rod is straight with no pitting or chrome flaking, and the failure is a tired rod seal, a reseal is often the better economic call — especially on older or discontinued lifts where a new cylinder is hard to source. If the metal is compromised, new seals will fail again in short order.
Score the inside of a barrel and you’re done — a scratch you can catch a fingernail in will chew up a fresh piston seal within weeks. Same story with a rod that’s been dinged by a dropped wrench or has rust bloom under flaking chrome. We tell shops in central Iowa the same thing every time: if the cylinder is out and apart, spend five minutes inspecting the surfaces honestly before you decide. On a busy two-post that lifts thirty cars a week, we usually recommend a new cylinder simply for the uptime — one part, one afternoon, done. On a home garage four-post that sees a project car twice a month, a seal kit is a perfectly reasonable choice.
Safety first: never trust hydraulics to hold the lift
This is the part of any car lift cylinder replacement guide that we refuse to soften. The cylinder is the thing holding the load, and the moment you crack a fitting or pull a pin, that support is gone. Every replacement starts with the lift fully lowered and empty, or if the geometry demands it, mechanically supported on rated stands, blocks, or the lift’s own safety locks — not on hydraulic pressure, ever. We’ve seen the aftermath of somebody who figured the fluid column would hold long enough. It doesn’t take much of a drop to break bones.
Then relieve stored pressure. Even a lowered lift can hold pressure in the line, and a cylinder with a load on it will spit fluid hard when a fitting comes loose. Cycle the lowering valve, bleed the line into a catch pan, and wear eye protection — hydraulic fluid under pressure can inject through skin. Lock out the power unit at the disconnect so nobody bumps the up button while your hands are inside the tower. Cap or bag open ports and lines the second they’re apart, because a shop floor’s worth of grit in a hydraulic system will destroy the new cylinder you just paid for. Slow, deliberate, contamination-free work is the whole game here.
Pulling the old cylinder without a fight
Access varies a lot by lift type. On most two-post lifts the cylinder lives inside the column or under the carriage, which means pulling covers, and sometimes loosening the equalizer cable to get slack. On four-posts the cylinder may sit under a runway or in a crossbeam; scissor lifts often bury it in the middle of the mechanism where you’ll be working through a small opening. Take photos as you disassemble. Note cable routing, sheave positions, and which way the clevis pins face — reassembly is much faster when you’re not guessing.
Expect pins to be stubborn. Years of load cycling work-hardens the contact surfaces, and rust does the rest. Penetrating oil the night before helps more than muscle does. Use a brass drift or a proper pin punch so you’re not mushrooming the pin and making it worse. If a pin absolutely won’t move, heat on the surrounding boss usually breaks it loose, but be careful of nearby seals, hoses, and paint. Once the cylinder is free, drain it into your catch pan before carrying it out — a big two-post cylinder holds a surprising amount of oil and it’s all going to end up on the floor otherwise. Keep the old unit until the new one is installed and cycled, because it’s your reference for dimensions if anything doesn’t line up.
Installing, bleeding, and testing the new cylinder
Mount the new cylinder loose first, get both ends aligned, then torque. A cylinder that’s forced into a slightly misaligned mount will side-load the rod and destroy the gland seal in a season — that’s the single most common cause of a repeat failure we get called back for. Use new O-rings on straight-thread ports, thread sealant rated for hydraulics on NPT (not tape, which sheds into the system), and don’t overtighten. Refill the reservoir with the fluid type the manufacturer specifies; mixing hydraulic oil types or substituting ATF where it doesn’t belong causes seal swelling and foaming.
Bleeding matters. Cycle the lift several times with no load, running it all the way up and all the way down, and let air work back to the reservoir. Air in a cylinder feels like a spongy or jerky rise and can cause uneven lifting on multi-cylinder lifts. Top off fluid as the level drops. Then load-test: put a vehicle on it, take it to full height, and let it sit while you watch for drift and check every fitting for weeping. When to call us instead
Plenty of shops handle this job in-house, and if you’ve got the space, the tools, and a slow afternoon, that’s fine. But there are situations where we tell people to stop and call. Inground lifts are the big one — they involve confined space, buried lines, and often environmental considerations around old fluid, and they are not a DIY project. Lifts with an unknown service history are another; if you bought a used lift and don’t know what’s been done to it, a full inspection is worth more than a cylinder swap.
