Car Lift Drive On Financing: A Pre-Purchase Checklist for Farm Shops

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A rural farm shop owner in southwest Iowa called us last spring about adding a car lift drive on unit to a machine shed he already used for tractor work. He needed exhaust and driveline access on the family pickups plus room to service a couple of hired-hand vehicles, and he wanted to know how the financing side worked before he ever chose a model. That call turned into a pre-purchase checklist we now share with every farm shop owner who reaches out. If you run a mixed-use rural shop and you are shopping a car lift drive on for the first time, this is the same walkthrough we would give you on the phone from Ames.

0% APR financing available on qualifying 4-post drive-on lifts. Southwest Iowa install crew, honest phone advice, and part support after the sale. Call 800-674-9302 for a farm-shop quote.

Why farm shops end up on a car lift drive on instead of a two-post

Almost every farm shop we quote starts the conversation asking about a two-post lift because that is what the local dealer runs. Nine times out of ten we end up recommending a car lift drive on setup instead. Here is why. On a farm the same shop that services the ranch pickup also sees the wife’s SUV, the neighbor’s grain hauler, and occasionally a piece of equipment that rolls on rubber. A drive-on 4-post accepts all of them without adjusting swing arms and without chasing pinch weld locations you cannot find on an unfamiliar chassis.

The other reason is winter. Southwest Iowa shops do exhaust and driveline work most heavily between November and March, and a car lift drive on unit lets you park a vehicle overhead for two days while a rusted U-bolt soaks in penetrating oil, then come back to it. A two-post asks you to unload every time. Farm shops love the flexibility. The tradeoff is footprint. A drive-on takes more floor square footage than a two-post, so we always measure the machine shed before we quote, especially if there is already a combine or a swather parked inside.

Step one: pick the capacity before you pick the brand

Capacity comes first on the checklist. If you are servicing half-ton pickups and passenger cars only, a 7,000 lb rating is enough on paper, but we always recommend 9,000 to 10,000 lb for a farm shop because half-tons keep getting heavier and you want headroom for the occasional three-quarter-ton neighbor drop-in. If you are regularly working on three-quarter or one-ton diesels, jump to a 12,000 lb car lift drive on. If a dually with a service body ever crosses your mind, look at 14,000 lb minimum.

Once you know the capacity you can narrow the brand list quickly. On the commercial side we stock Rotary and Challenger and both make farm-shop-appropriate drive-on 4-posts in 9K, 12K, and 14K. On the home-shop side BendPak and Atlas both make solid units in the 7K to 9K range that fit a mixed-use rural building. We steer farm shops away from bargain-bin imports because parts availability matters when you are 90 miles from a metro dealer and your only lift is down. Every brand we carry, we stock parts for and can service.

Step two: measure the shed, not just the vehicle

Farm sheds are famously variable. We had one southwest Iowa customer measure his sidewall at 14 feet but forget the truss chord dropped to 11 feet in the middle of the span. A car lift drive on rise of 72 inches plus a six-foot passenger car equals about 13 feet at the roofline, and he was going to hit the truss on the second vehicle. We caught it before install. Now the checklist says: measure the lowest hard obstacle in the ceiling, not the peak.

Measure the door too. A 10-foot sliding door is enough for a pickup at drive-in height, but if you plan to leave the vehicle overhead and pull another one under it, you need to be able to close the door with the lift up. Measure column-to-column clearance for the intended footprint plus at least three feet on each side for swing space and cross-shed pedestrian traffic. If you are converting an existing shed, mark the anchor pattern with chalk before you commit. A car lift drive on install is easier than a two-post but the layout has to be right.

Step three: understand the financing terms actually available

We offer 0% APR financing for 12 months with a 90-day deferred first payment on qualifying drive-on 4-post purchases through our lending partner. On a $6,000 lift that is roughly $500 a month starting three months after delivery, no interest, if you pay off inside the term. Beyond 12 months the lender quotes extended terms in the 6 to 9 percent range depending on credit and dollar amount. For a farm shop that has predictable winter cash flow, the 12-month zero interest plan almost always fits better than a longer-term loan.

Application is simple. We collect a name, phone, and email, and the lender pulls credit for a soft approval within one business day for most farm-shop owners. We do not run the credit ourselves, we just hand it off. The lender emails a signature packet and, once signed, we schedule delivery and install. If a bank you already work with quotes better terms, we accept purchase orders from local banks too. Our job is getting the car lift drive on unit installed and running, not steering you to any single lender.

Step four: budget install and freight separately

The equipment cost is only part of the check. On a car lift drive on install a farm shop should also budget for freight from our Iowa warehouse or the factory, install labor, and any electrical work the local shop cannot do in-house. Freight to a southwest Iowa address usually lands in the low hundreds. Install labor for a standard 4-post drive-on runs in the mid-hundreds to low four figures depending on distance from Ames and site prep. Electrical is variable because it depends on whether the existing panel has spare capacity.

We quote all three line items up front. No surprises, no change orders unless the shop asks for something outside the original scope. We also offer a turnkey one-price option for shops that would rather have a single number and one phone call. Either way, when we send a farm shop the quote it lists the lift, freight, install labor, and any accessories like rolling jacks or drip trays separately, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. That transparency is what our financing partners want to see too.

Step five: plan the payment schedule around the seasons

Rural cash flow is seasonal. That is not news to any farm shop owner and it is not news to our lender either. If your income arrives in October and April, we can time the deferred first payment to land after a check clears rather than before it. The 90-day defer built into the 0% APR program helps, and beyond that our lender is generally willing to structure a first payment date around a real cash flow calendar if you ask up front.

The other seasonal note: install season for a car lift drive on in southwest Iowa is best from April through October when the shed floor is dry and the anchors set clean. We can install in winter but the concrete needs to be above freezing for the epoxy to cure right. If you order in November for a March install we can lock the price and schedule now, then deliver when the weather cooperates. That works well for farm shops that use tax-planning cycles to time equipment purchases. Ask us about it when you call for the quote.

Step six: recap and next steps for the checklist

Here is the checklist in short form. One, decide on capacity based on the heaviest vehicle you actually service, not the average. Two, pick a brand we can support with parts and service from Ames. Three, measure the shed at the lowest hard point and confirm the anchor pattern fits. Four, get the financing terms in writing before you sign, including the deferred payment date and any prepay language. Five, budget freight, install, and electrical as separate line items. Six, plan the schedule around the real farm cash-flow year.

When you are ready to talk numbers, call us at 800-674-9302 or email founder@autoliftserv.com. We also publish a longer 4-post lift buyer’s guide and a companion article on lift financing terms that covers the paperwork side in more depth. A car lift drive on unit is one of the biggest single equipment purchases a farm shop makes short of a tractor, and we want the checklist done right the first time so the lift lasts a decade or more without regret.
