Buying a car lift drive on platform for a home shop feels simple until you’re standing on your own concrete asking whether it’s actually thick enough to hold one up for the next twenty years. We worked with a collector in the Iowa-Illinois corridor last year who wanted to store two vehicles — one on the lift, one underneath — in a 30×40 pole building he was putting up specifically for restoration and metalwork on a passenger car under 7,000 lbs. Planning the Slab Before the Car Lift Drive On Purchase

Before we ever talked model numbers, the first conversation was about the floor. He had a 30×40 pole building shop planned with 12 foot sidewalls, which is plenty of clearance for a two-vehicle stack, but clearance doesn’t matter if the slab underneath can’t hold the load. A drive-on platform storing one vehicle on top and another underneath concentrates a lot of weight onto four contact points, and that load transfers straight down into the concrete, not out across a wide footprint like a parked car’s four tires spread over open floor space.

We recommended a minimum slab thickness with rebar reinforcement specifically under the footprint where the lift columns and base would sit, poured before the building’s interior work started rather than patched in afterward. That’s the detail collectors doing restoration work skip most often — they plan the building around the cars, then treat the floor as an afterthought. Getting the rebar grid right at pour time cost him very little extra compared to what it would have cost to core out and reinforce a finished slab a year later.

Choosing Capacity for Storage Versus Restoration Work

He was clear from the first email that he wanted something rated for a passenger vehicle around 7,000 lbs or less, used partly for car maintenance and partly just to double his storage footprint. That’s a common ask, and it’s worth separating the two uses because they load the equipment differently. A car lift drive on platform used purely for storage sees long, static load with the vehicle parked and left — no cycling, no risk of load shift during work. One used for restoration and metalwork sees repeated raising and lowering, sometimes with a car partially disassembled, which changes the weight distribution unpredictably.

We’ve had customers assume they could run a lift off a standard 110v circuit because that’s what the rest of their garage used, only to find out mid-install that the motor needs a dedicated 220v line and a breaker upgrade.

Because he was building from scratch, we were able to get the electrical spec to his contractor early, so the wiring was roughed in before the walls closed up. That’s the advantage of a first-year build over a retrofit — every infrastructure decision is still open. The Install: What Actually Happened on Install Day

By the time we arrived for install, the slab had cured well past minimum strength and the electrical was already run to the right spot in the shop. That prep work made the install itself straightforward — most of our time went into leveling the platform and calibrating the safety locks rather than fighting infrastructure problems. We’ve done installs where the floor or power wasn’t ready and the crew spends half the day waiting on someone else’s punch list; this wasn’t that.

We walked him through the restraint engagement, the ramp angle for driving a lower, wider restoration project onto the platform without scraping, and the maintenance schedule for the season ahead. For a first-time owner, that walkthrough matters as much as the physical install — a car lift drive on platform is straightforward equipment, but only if the owner understands what a correctly locked system looks and sounds like before they’re relying on it alone in a shop forty minutes from the nearest lift tech.

First Service Visit: What We Found After One Year

We reset the tension, checked the anchor bolts against the slab for any movement, and confirmed the rebar-reinforced pour was holding exactly as planned with zero settling. A lift installed on a properly prepped slab shows almost no wear signs at the base after year one; that’s the payoff for doing the concrete work right at the start.

What We’d Tell Any Collector Doing This Build Today

Looking back at that first year, the sequence that worked was: plan the slab and rebar around the lift’s actual footprint and weight, run the 220v power before the walls close, choose capacity above your current project rather than right at the line, and schedule a real inspection at the one-year mark instead of waiting for a problem. None of that is complicated, but it’s easy to skip when you’re excited about the restoration project itself and treating the lift as a checkbox item.
