Continuous Hold Rating: The One Spec That Matters Most

Not every drive-on lift is rated for continuous vehicle hold. Some are designed for service lifts only — you put a vehicle up, do a job, and bring it back down within hours. Storing a vehicle for a season means the lift is under load twenty-four hours a day for months. Structurally, most quality four-post drive-ons handle this fine, but you need to confirm two things: that the manufacturer explicitly lists continuous or storage duty in the spec sheet, and that the lift rests on mechanical safety locks the entire time, not on hydraulic pressure.

Hydraulic seals bleed pressure slowly over weeks. A vehicle stored on hydraulics only will slowly settle, potentially into the floor or against something below. Mechanical locks — the ratcheting pawls at each column — hold the load on solid steel and do not bleed. For a car lift drive on used for seasonal storage, engaging the locks is not optional. Model Number Comparison: What He Actually Considered

We compared three specific drive-on models for his use case, all in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound class since he was storing service vehicles like Ford F-250 and Chevy 2500 pickups. The models differed in runway length (standard versus extended), column height (standard versus tall), and lock system design (spring-loaded pawls versus manual pin locks). All three were from established manufacturers with active parts pipelines — that was the non-negotiable filter we applied.

The winner for his fleet was the extended-runway, standard-column version with automatic pawl locks. Extended runways handled the F-250 wheelbase without overhang. Standard columns kept the lift within his ceiling. Automatic pawls meant crew could not accidentally leave a lift unlocked on the way to storing a vehicle. Model-number-level detail matters when you are picking a car lift drive on for a specific use case — the base name of the lift is not enough. Ceiling Height and Vehicle Stacking Math

To store a vehicle overhead, you need the sum of: vehicle overall height, plus lift lower runway clearance (roughly 6 inches when raised to storage height), plus the height the vehicle needs to be lifted (usually 6-7 feet to allow a second vehicle underneath), plus safety margin above the stored vehicle roof (18 inches at minimum). For a full-size pickup at 78 inches tall, that math wants a bay ceiling of about 12 feet 6 inches to store a truck above and park a truck below.

Davenport’s fleet bay was 14 feet, which was plenty. If you are considering seasonal storage in a garage with a 10-foot ceiling, you can only store a low car (sedan or coupe) above a low car — not a truck above a truck. This is the first math to do on any car lift drive on storage plan. Measure the ceiling, measure the tallest vehicle you might store, and check whether the math works. If it does not, either raise the ceiling or pick a different use case for the lift. We would rather tell you upfront than sell you a lift that will not do what you wanted.

Anchor Bolt Considerations for Storage Loads

Storage-duty lifts put a different kind of stress on anchor bolts than service-duty lifts. A service lift cycles a vehicle up and back down within a few hours, so the anchors experience load pulses. A storage lift holds full load for weeks. The anchor engineering can accommodate both, but the concrete and the anchor spec need to be right. Under-spec concrete under a storage lift can develop hairline cracks around the anchors over years that would not show up under lighter service duty.

For Davenport’s install, we specified six-inch, 3,500 PSI concrete with wedge anchors torqued to the manual value. We also recommended he inspect the anchor bases visually every six months — look for any concrete cracks radiating from the anchor washer, any daylight between the base plate and the concrete, any rust weeping from the anchor. That is a three-minute walkaround, quarterly. Skip it and you are trusting the install for years without verification. Vehicle Preparation Before Long-Term Storage

Before you put a vehicle up for the season, prep it properly. Fuel stabilizer in the tank, tire pressure raised to the top of the spec range (they will lose pressure over months), battery either disconnected or on a maintainer, and a note somewhere obvious on the dash reminding you it is up there. Sounds silly, but fleet managers who rotate three vehicles at a time have absolutely lost track of which one is up and driven a truck into their own lift. Post a bay-level whiteboard listing what is currently stored.

Also check the vehicle’s own overall weight before you lift. Fully-loaded work trucks with tool crates, spare tires, and equipment often weigh more than the empty spec plate suggests. If a truck at rated GVWR is 9,500 pounds, your 9,000 pound car lift drive on is under-rated even before the crew tosses two toolboxes in the bed. Weigh it if in doubt, and unload equipment before storage if you are close to the lift limit. This is basic but overlooked, especially in municipal fleets where trucks accumulate gear over time.

The First Rotation and What They Learned

Davenport’s first fall rotation put an F-250 on the drive-on for six months. In the spring, when they brought it back down, they found the tires had gone flat despite the pressure raise (normal — tires bleed slowly), the battery was dead despite the maintainer being on (bad maintainer, not the lift’s fault), and the lift itself was exactly as they left it. Mechanical locks fully engaged, no hydraulic settle, no leaks, no anchor movement. The lift did exactly what it was supposed to do: nothing.

They rotated four vehicles through storage that first year with no incidents. The fleet manager told us the biggest change he had to make was administrative — logging who was up, when they were put up, when they came down, and who had inspected the safety locks. What He Would Have Done Differently

One thing. He would have specified a drip tray add-on from the start. His stored vehicles occasionally weep small amounts of fluid — a bit of coolant residue, an oil drop from a valve cover gasket, some AC condensate. Over months, that puddles on the floor under the runways. A drip tray catches it and keeps the bay floor clean. Retrofitting a drip tray after install is not hard but it costs more to ship separately and you have to schedule a small install visit.

Everything else, he would repeat exactly. Right lift, right runway length, right lock system, right install. His parting comment: buying the right car lift drive on the first time turned a hard problem (storing four service vehicles through winter without eating bay space) into a solved problem.
