A quick-lube franchise operator in Cedar Rapids called us wanting to add a car lift drive on to a back bay he had been using as parts storage. His plan was ambitious: keep the front bays running the standard oil-change assembly line, and use the new drive-on bay for restoration side work, minor metal fabrication, and higher-margin custom jobs he could market through his existing customer database. He asked for a real cost breakdown — lift, install, bay retrofit, and the workflow math that would tell him whether the whole concept made sense. This article walks through the numbers we gave him and the layout decisions that came out of that conversation.

The Lift Itself: What He Chose
He landed on a 14,000 lb rated open-front drive-on with rolling jacks, low-profile approach ramps, and a drip tray kit. The 14K capacity gave him headroom for anything a customer would drive in — restoration projects tend to be older cars and light trucks well under that ceiling. He passed on 18K because his bay was not deep enough for the longer runway. Base lift with the ramps and drip trays landed in the low-to-mid five-figure range delivered. Rolling jacks added another mid-three-figure line. That is the equipment line.
He asked whether he should buy new or hunt for a used commercial car lift drive on. Our honest answer: used drive-on lifts of this class have almost no market. The good ones stay with their owners for decades, the bad ones are bad because of hidden cable or cylinder damage, and there is no reliable way to inspect a used lift before it comes off the columns. Every year or two we see a shop pay $6,000 for a used lift and spend $4,000 fixing it before it can hold a car. Buying new from a distributor who will install and service it is the boring answer, and it is the right answer. Warranty coverage on new commercial drive-on lifts is typically five years on structure and one year on hydraulics and cables.
Freight and Delivery to Cedar Rapids
Shipping a commercial drive-on from our warehouse in Ames to a shop in Cedar Rapids runs in the mid-three-figure range for a straight LTL freight shipment. We typically stage it on a residential-style flatbed with a liftgate if the shop does not have a forklift, which some quick-lube franchises do not because they never receive palletized freight bigger than tire stacks. His shop had a small forklift for tire delivery, so we could ship on a standard commercial flatbed and save the liftgate charge.
Delivery scheduling is worth building into the project timeline. Freight carriers in eastern Iowa run a two- to four-day window most weeks, and we tell customers to have the bay cleared and the slab prepped before the truck is scheduled. What you do not want is the driver arriving to a bay full of tire cores. If you are adding a car lift drive on to a working shop, plan the delivery on a Monday and the install for the same week if possible. That keeps the crated lift from sitting exposed to whatever the Iowa weather feels like giving you that week. Winter deliveries add complexity because the hydraulic oil in the power unit ships full and cold oil is thick. We recommend letting the power unit warm to shop ambient for at least four hours before first cycle.
Install Labor and Slab Prep
Install of a commercial 14K drive-on is a one-day, two-person job for our crew. Cost lands in the low four-figure range for the labor line, all-in. That includes uncrating, column plumbing, runway assembly, hydraulic hose run, cable pull, initial cycle testing, and a load test with a shop vehicle. If your slab needs prep — grinding a high spot, adding a shimmed pad, patching a spall — that adds time and cost. His slab was in good shape, so we did not have to add anything.
Slab prep is the wild card on any car lift drive on project. His bay had been a parts storage room, and the slab under the shelving was in unknown condition. We had him move the shelving three weeks before install so we could inspect the slab surface. What we found was one dime-sized spall near where a column would land and one hairline crack that ran diagonal across the anchor pattern. The spall was cosmetic and did not affect anchor pullout. The crack ran through one of the four anchor locations, and we shifted the entire lift layout eight inches to the west to move that anchor onto solid concrete. That kind of adjustment on install day costs nothing if the crew notices before drilling. It costs a lot if you drill first and shift second. That is why we walk the slab before we uncrate.
Electrical, Ventilation, and Air
The lift needs a dedicated 220V single-phase 30-amp circuit at the power unit column. His shop had 208V three-phase for the main compressor and 120V outlets everywhere else — no existing 220V single-phase. Electrician cost to run a new circuit from the main panel about 40 feet was in the mid-three-figure range. If you already have 220V in the bay, this is a smaller line. If not, budget for it. Some quick-lube shops built decades ago have 208V three-phase and the lift power unit needs a phase converter or a three-phase motor swap. That is a real conversation and we will spec it either way.
Ventilation is often overlooked when a bay changes purpose. His original bay was passive-vent for parts storage. Adding a car lift drive on for restoration work meant potential welding fumes and paint prep dust, so he added a small ceiling exhaust fan and a floor sweep vent. That was a low-four-figure line item done during the install week. Air was already run to the bay from the compressor loop, but the drop was set for a tire machine, not for lift-height accessories. He extended the air line to reach a reel at ceiling height above the lift. That is a couple hundred bucks in fittings and hose. Small numbers, but they add up if you skip them from the budget.
Bay Layout for Restoration Workflow
The layout question was where he wanted the most input. Restoration work is workflow-heavy — you need a welding cart, a workbench, a parts cleaner, a media blaster if you have room, and space to lay out fenders and body panels. Trying to do that around a running quick-lube assembly line means the restoration bay has to be self-contained. We drew the layout with the drive-on centered in the bay, the welding cart on the driver-side wall, the workbench and vise on the passenger-side wall, and a rolling parts cart that lives under the raised lift when not in use.
The advantage of a car lift drive on for restoration is that the vehicle stays at chest height for hours or days at a time without you needing to swap fixtures. On a two-post, you can leave a car up for a while, but the arms block access under the fenders. On a drive-on, the runways are along the vehicle’s wheels and the entire underbody is open. Metal work under a floor pan, exhaust modification, transmission drop — all easier with a drive-on layout. He also planned to add a parts washer and a small blast cabinet against the back wall inside year one. We drew both into the plan so we could pre-run the utilities. Doing that layout math up front saves you from repainting the floor a year later.
The Total Number and the Payback Math
All-in cost for his project — lift, ramps, jacks, drip trays, freight, install, slab check, electrical, ventilation adjustments, air extension, and layout paint — landed in the mid-five-figure range. Not cheap, but not shocking for a commercial bay retrofit. Payback math depends entirely on utilization. He projected two to three restoration jobs per month at an average revenue of a low four-figure amount per job. That put annual revenue on the bay well into the five figures within year one.
The math worked because his customer database was already large — he had ten years of oil-change customers who owned interesting cars and had never had a reason to trust him with anything bigger. Offering them restoration and metal work through the same shop they already knew was a low-friction sell. He also added the drive-on bay to his shop’s Google Business Profile and website, and inside three months he was getting inquiries specifically for the lift capability. That is the pattern with commercial drive-on adoption: the lift itself is a marketing asset almost as much as it is a service asset. A car lift drive on visible from the front counter tells customers you can do more than change oil, and that translates into higher-ticket work you would otherwise send down the street.
