Why a Car Lift Electric Motor Fails on Oil Pan Gasket Jobs

Oil pan gasket work sounds simple, but it’s actually one of the harder jobs on a motor’s duty cycle. You raise the vehicle to head height, hold it there for an extended stretch while a tech drains fluid, drops the pan, cleans mating surfaces, and reseals — then you lower it, and often raise it again to double-check for leaks. That’s repeated starts and stops under load, which is exactly the kind of use that overheats a tired car lift electric motor. In the case we handled near the border, the motor had already been running hot the day before, and the tech noticed it get quote hot to the touch before he even finished raising the vehicle a few feet.

By the next morning, that same motor made a loud hum and started smoking within about ten seconds of being powered on. Bay Dimensions That Actually Matter for a Two-Post Lift

Most Iowa and Nebraska garages we service run their two-post bays at 12 to 14 feet wide and 20 to 24 feet deep, which gives enough clearance for the arms to swing fully under a extended-cab pickup without the tech having to squeeze between the column and a shop wall. The car lift electric motor and its power unit usually mount on one column, and that column needs a clear path to the electrical panel that doesn’t cross a walking lane. We’ve seen shops run extension cords across the bay floor because the original layout didn’t plan for where the motor’s power unit would sit — that’s a tripping hazard and it strains the motor circuit with voltage drop over a long cord run. Plan the electrical drop before you plan where the lift goes, not after.

Diagnosing the Symptoms Before You Replace the Motor

Not every hot or noisy motor needs full replacement, but the symptoms we saw in this case — heat, then a loud hum, then smoke within seconds of startup — point to something more serious than a stuck relay. A humming motor that won’t turn the pump shaft is often trying to start against a load it can’t overcome, whether that’s a seized pump, a jammed valve, or bad bearings inside the motor itself. Matching Motor Specs to Your Existing Lift

For a typical 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post, you’re usually looking at a motor in the 3 horsepower range spinning around 3,300 RPM, with startup amp draw that can spike into the 40s before settling lower. Matching voltage — single-phase 220 versus three-phase 208-230 — is non-negotiable, since the wrong phase configuration simply won’t run.

We ask for the lift’s serial number every time, because manufacturers change motor specs across production runs even on the same model line. A lift built five years ago might spec a different car lift electric motor than the same model built last year. Cross-referencing the serial number against the manufacturer’s parts catalog before we quote a replacement saves the shop from ordering the wrong unit and losing another day of downtime waiting on the correct part.

Workflow: Positioning the Lift for Multi-Generation Crews

In a family shop where a grandfather, a son, and a grandson might all be working the same bay on different days, workflow consistency matters as much as raw lift capacity. We recommend keeping the lift controls and motor on the same side of the bay across all lifts in the shop, so muscle memory carries over whether someone’s running the older unit or the newer one. Consistent arm configuration — same swing direction, same lock height — also cuts down on the small mistakes that happen when switching between bays under time pressure.

For pan gasket work specifically, position the lift so the vehicle’s nose points toward the shop’s drain and fluid disposal station. That sounds minor, but over hundreds of gasket jobs a year it saves real walking distance and reduces spilled oil trailing across the shop floor. We also suggest keeping a rolling stool and catch pan staged at a fixed spot near each lift’s motor side, so techs aren’t hunting for tools mid-job while a vehicle sits elevated.

Preventive Maintenance That Extends Motor Life

Most of the motor failures we see trace back to skipped maintenance rather than bad luck. Hydraulic fluid that’s low, contaminated, or overdue for a change forces the pump to work harder, which increases the electrical load on the motor and shortens its life. We recommend checking fluid level and clarity monthly in a busy shop, and doing a full fluid change annually or per the manufacturer’s schedule, whichever comes first.

Beyond fluid, keep the motor’s cooling vents clear of shop dust and debris, verify the electrical connections at the motor terminal box are tight (loose connections cause resistance heating that mimics a failing motor), and listen for early-stage humming or straining sounds during routine lifts. If your team notices a lift getting quote hot to the touch or working harder than usual to raise a vehicle, that’s the moment to schedule an inspection — not after it smokes. A five-minute check now is far cheaper than a bay sitting idle for a week waiting on parts.
