Step 1: Did the old motor fail catastrophically, or just wear out?

Start here. This is where budget-conscious decision-making runs into reality for a racing team. If you’ve got two weeks before your next event and transmission service is on the schedule daily, a new car lift electric motor with a manufacturer warranty and predictable lead time is almost always the safer bet, even at a higher upfront cost. Used motors — even good ones — come with zero warranty and no guarantee of showing up on time from wherever you’re sourcing them.

If your timeline is looser, say a month or more before you need the lift back in daily service, a used motor becomes a more realistic option because you have time to source, test, and install it without race-weekend pressure. Step 3: What’s the age and configuration of your existing lift?
