The car lift electrical question comes up first every time we sit down with a third-generation family garage in east-central Iowa. Grandpa wired the shop in 1968 for a compressor and two ceiling lights, dad added a 100-amp panel in the 80s to run a MIG welder, and now the current owner wants to store his classics on a four-post through winter and still be able to run a stall welder on a Saturday. Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What Actually Lives in Rural Iowa Panels

Nearly every family-owned shop in east-central Iowa is on single-phase 240-volt residential or light-commercial service from the local rural electric cooperative. Three-phase is available in industrial parks around Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, but almost never at a farmstead or a rural highway garage. That is fine. Every storage-class four-post car lift and every entry through mid-commercial two-post we sell runs on single-phase 220 or 240 volts. Three-phase is only worth chasing if you already have it and you are running four or more high-duty commercial units at once in the same building.

If a salesman tries to talk you into three-phase for a family storage lift, ask him what problem it solves. For seasonal storage of two or three classics on a four-post, a single-phase 20-amp dedicated circuit is exactly right. Three-phase does have real advantages, smoother motor start, smaller conductor sizing, better efficiency at heavy continuous load, but none of those matter when your car lift runs maybe 20 cycles a year to put the Chevelle up and pull it back down at spring show season. Single-phase, 220 or 240, is the answer.

The Dedicated 20-Amp Circuit and Panel Math

The specific circuit spec for the four-post storage lifts we sell most, a Rotary or BendPak home-storage four-post, is a dedicated 220 or 240-volt single-phase 20-amp branch circuit. Dedicated means nothing else on that breaker, no shop light, no compressor, no welder outlet. The lift wants clean voltage under motor start. A 20-amp breaker with 12-gauge THHN copper conductors is enough for the run distance most family shops will see, up to about 50 feet from the panel to the power unit. Longer runs step up to 10-gauge to prevent voltage drop.

Panel math is straightforward. A 20-amp 240-volt circuit consumes 20 amps of your 240-volt panel capacity when the motor is running, but that only happens during a raise cycle, usually 30 to 45 seconds at a time. If your existing panel is a 100-amp service with a welder, compressor, and lights, the 20-amp addition is fine as long as you are not running the welder mid-lift-cycle. A 200-amp service is more comfortable and gives room to grow. If the panel is old fuse-box style, budget a panel upgrade before the car lift install, we will not certify a lift on unsafe upstream service.

Real Dimensions: Ceiling, Bay Width, and Column Footprint

Electrical is only half the picture, dimensions are the other half. A four-post storage lift for two-vehicle stacking wants a minimum bay of 12 feet wide by about 22 feet long, plus at least 12 feet of ceiling clear height to lift a full-size classic sedan or a half-ton pickup off the deck. Column footprint is about six inches by six inches at each of four corners, and the drive-on runways are typically 20 to 21 feet long with a 40 to 42 inch spread center-to-center. Measure to any obstruction, not to the peak of the roof.

If your bay is tight, and many east-central Iowa farmsteads have 10 or 11 foot side walls, you may be limited to storing only the shorter classics with the top vehicle raised partway rather than all the way up. That is still valuable, a Corvette or an Impala tucked at seven feet leaves plenty of room to walk a lawnmower or a snowblower underneath in the winter. We will measure your bay and quote a car lift that actually fits before you write a check, not after. Nothing sours a family project faster than equipment that will not go up.

Wiring Runs, Conduit, and Rough-In Timing

Wiring rough-in should happen before the lift columns go vertical, because the conduit landing point on the power unit needs to be reachable without pulling wire around finished walls. On a four-post, the power unit typically mounts to one of the driver-side columns at about waist height. Have your electrician run EMT or Sealtite from the panel to a two-gang box within four feet of that column position. Leave 24 inches of extra wire coiled at the box so we can trim to length and land the terminals on install day.

If the shop building is going up new, get the electrician on the schedule between concrete cure and lift delivery. That is usually a three-week window. If the building is already finished and you are retrofitting, plan on a half-day of electrical work before the lift install crew arrives. Getting the wiring right on the first pass saves us both time on install day, and gets your car lift ready to store vehicles that much sooner.

Motor Starting Current and Voltage Drop

Motor starting current is the number that matters, not steady-state running current. A typical two-horsepower single-phase lift motor draws about 8 to 10 amps continuous but can spike to 40 or 50 amps for a fraction of a second on start. That inrush is what trips undersized breakers and browns down cheap voltage. The 20-amp breaker we spec is calibrated to survive the inrush without nuisance trips. If your panel is far from the lift, voltage drop under motor start can also cause hesitant lift behavior, upsize the conductor gauge if the run is over 50 feet.

The lift power unit itself is designed to handle repeat starts without heat buildup, most commercial-grade units are rated for 30 starts per hour, which is far more than a family storage owner will ever use. If you notice the motor bogging down or the lift raising more slowly than normal, that is often a voltage-drop symptom, not a lift problem. A quick check with a multimeter at the power unit terminals during a lift cycle usually reveals whether the wiring is fine or the panel is sagging. Grounding, GFCI, and Code Compliance in Iowa

Iowa follows the National Electrical Code with local amendments county by county. Grounding on a car lift is essential, a properly landed equipment ground on the motor and control panel protects the operator if there is a wiring fault. Most modern lifts ship with a factory-installed grounding lug on the power unit, use it. GFCI protection is generally not required on the dedicated lift branch circuit in a commercial-classified shop, but if your family garage is coded as residential, some counties will want a GFCI breaker at the panel. Ask your local inspector.

Permit-wise, most rural east-central Iowa counties require an electrical permit for a new dedicated 240-volt circuit but not for the lift installation itself, since the lift is a plug-in or hardwired appliance rather than a structural change. Cities like Iowa City and Cedar Rapids may require a mechanical permit as well. Common Wiring Mistakes We See on Service Calls

The most common wiring mistake we run into on service calls is a shared circuit, someone tapped the compressor circuit or added the lift onto a general shop-outlet run because it was closer than the panel. Under motor start the shared circuit browns down, the lift raises weakly, and after enough cycles the shared breaker starts nuisance-tripping. The fix is a dedicated home run. Second most common is undersized wire on a long run, which shows the same symptoms. Third is a loose neutral or ground at the panel, which can put the motor case at low voltage and shock a tech.
