A collector in the Quad Cities called us a year ago about a car lift for a restoration shop he was building next to his home garage. His plan was to run a 1968 Camaro restoration through metal work, paint prep, and mechanical rebuild over the course of a year, using the lift for every stage. Now that year is up and we sat down with him for a first-year review — what worked, what he’d change, and the hydraulic cylinder seal question that came up right around month ten. This article is that conversation, cleaned up and anonymized, because the details will help other collectors making the same decision.

Choosing the Lift for a Restoration Project

The collector’s requirements were specific. He needed a car lift that could support the Camaro through complete disassembly — engine and transmission out, subframe dropped, floor pans cut and rewelded — while keeping the body accessible from underneath for weeks at a time. He also wanted to work on daily drivers and other project cars in the same bay when the Camaro was parked to the side. That ruled out a two-post because you cannot roll a partially disassembled body around a two-post’s columns.

We recommended a 10,000-pound four-post car lift with drive-through runways, a rolling jack, and an air-line kit. The four-post lets him park the Camaro at working height for extended metal work sessions while wheels or subframe are off — he blocks the frame from the runways and the lift carries the load through the runway-to-frame contact. The rolling jack handles wheel-off tasks when needed. Total ceiling clearance in his shop was 13 feet, which cleared the lift’s full-rise position comfortably.

Install Day and the Concrete Surprise

Install day arrived four weeks after order. Our crew arrived at 7:30 a.m. to a clean shop with the bay marked for lift placement. First step was the concrete core test — we drilled a two-inch core from an inconspicuous corner and confirmed the slab was 4,000 psi with a 5-inch thickness. That’s plenty for a four-post. What surprised us was that the slab was poured on top of a compacted gravel base with no vapor barrier, which is common in older buildings but requires a slightly different anchor detail because the anchor bottom bears differently.

We used a slightly longer anchor than standard to account for the base, and the install went to plan from there. Runways set at 8:30, columns plumbed and lasered level by 10:30, hydraulic lines routed and pressurized by noon. Commissioning cycles — three full lift-and-lower cycles with sequential lock checks — ran through the early afternoon. By 3:30 the lift was signed off and the collector was rolling his Camaro onto the runways for the first time. Total install time was one working day.

Restoration and Metal Work: Six Months of Use

The Camaro spent the first six months on the lift getting floor pans, trunk pan, and quarter panel repairs. Metal work with a MIG welder generates spatter and grinding sparks, and one concern with a car lift in that environment is protecting the hydraulic cylinder from weld splatter and the cable pulleys from grinding dust. The collector rigged a canvas drop cloth around the lift columns during welding sessions and vacuumed the runway rails after each grinding session. Simple discipline, but it made a real difference.

What surprised him was how much he used the rolling jack. During metal work sessions he’d raise the Camaro to a comfortable working height, block the frame, then use the rolling jack to raise individual corners when he needed to spin a wheel or check panel alignment against the tire. The jack paid for itself in the first two months. He also added a pair of the aluminum drip trays under the vehicle to catch grinding dust and welding slag — those are $60 accessories that keep his shop floor clean.

Month Ten: The Hydraulic Cylinder Question

Around month ten the collector noticed a slow drift — the lift would settle about a quarter inch overnight when the Camaro was parked at working height on the mechanical locks. Not a safety issue because the locks were holding the vehicle, but a signal that the cylinder seals were passing a bit of fluid. He called us, described the symptom, and we walked through the diagnostic. Slow drift when parked on locks means the check valve or the cylinder seal is bypassing, and it usually shows up between year one and year three on a heavily used lift.

On a residential-use car lift used for restoration this is normal wear. The seal kit is stocked in our Iowa warehouse and ships within 48 hours. The collector chose to have our tech come out and swap the seals rather than DIY the job, which took about three hours. Total cost for the seal kit and the service call was modest — a small maintenance line item for a lift that had been running near-daily for a year. He also had us check the cable tension while we were there; the cables had settled slightly and we retensioned to spec.

Cable Tension, Anchor Torque, and the Annual Check

The seal service call turned into a full annual inspection. We checked cable tension on all four cables — they had loosened about 5 percent from install, which is normal after the first year — and retensioned. We torque-checked the anchor bolts and found two of the sixteen anchors had backed off slightly, which we retorqued to spec. Hydraulic fluid level was fine and the fluid looked clean. Total time for the full check was 45 minutes on top of the seal service.

We recommend this annual check on every car lift we install because catching small drifts early prevents big failures later. A cable that loses tension progressively will eventually snap; an anchor that backs off will eventually pull; a seal that passes fluid slowly will eventually leak enough to strand a vehicle at height. The collector now schedules the annual visit as part of his shop calendar and we send a reminder in month eleven of each year.

What He’d Change and What He’d Keep

Asked what he’d change one year in, the collector’s answer was interesting. He’d change nothing about the lift itself — the four-post was the right pick and every capacity and dimension worked. What he’d add earlier was the drip tray set and a set of longer approach ramps. The stock ramps that came with the lift work fine for daily drivers but are steeper than he’d like for the Camaro at its lowered ride height. Longer ramps cost about $200 and eliminate the risk of scraping the air dam during entry.

What he’d keep is the rolling jack. It gets used every week and it doubled the versatility of the four-post. He’d also keep the choice of professional install; he considered doing the install himself to save money and now says he’s glad he didn’t. Lasering the columns level and torquing the anchors right is not a job you want to relearn on your only lift. Every hour we save the customer on install is an hour he spent on the actual restoration.

Advice for the Next Collector

His advice for the next collector considering a car lift is short. Buy more capacity than you think you need — a 10K four-post handles a Camaro and a modern half-ton truck with margin, while a 7K would have been tight and limiting. Spend the money on the accessories that get used every week — rolling jack, drip trays, extended ramps — and skip the ones you’ll use twice a year. Take the professional install; the plumb and level matters. And plan for a seal service around year two or three, budget it, and don’t panic when the lift drifts a quarter inch.
