Our first-year car lift review starts in a West Des Moines RV and trailer service shop we installed for a year ago this spring. The owner had spent months mapping out his new pole-building bay layout and finally called Auto Lift Services when it was time to pick equipment. We installed a symmetric two-post, walked him through his first oil pan gasket job on it, and stayed in touch through every season. Why we spec’d a 10K two-post for the West Des Moines build

The shop primarily services RV chassis and light trailers, but the owner wanted the option to lift a heavier passenger truck for coaches he was towing behind. A 10,000 lb symmetric two-post gave us the working capacity without pushing him into a 12K commercial frame that would have cost more freight and eaten into the ceiling clearance he already had. His pole building had 12-foot side walls and a 14-foot peak, which is workable but tight once you factor in the overhead beam of a clearfloor lift.

We looked at baseplate as an alternative, and it would have preserved ceiling. He decided the tripping hazard of the floor plate against his mobility around trailer axles wasn’t worth it. So we went overhead, spec’d shorter columns to fit the trusses, and gave him the exact concrete pour instructions before he had the slab poured. That last step matters — the difference between a car lift install that lands smoothly and one that eats a weekend is almost always the concrete underneath it.

The garage build-out sequence we followed

We told him to sequence the pole building in this order: rough electrical for a 220V drop at the intended column, then slab pour with proper thickness at the anchor zones, then interior finish, then delivery. Most owners want to finish the walls first and then figure out the lift. That gets it backwards. If your electrical is in the wrong place you are either running exposed conduit forever or paying twice.

He followed the sequence and it paid off. When our delivery truck showed up in April, the concrete had cured through winter, the 220V drop was in the exact ceiling location we specified, and there was a clear path from the overhead door to the install spot. Total time from truck arrival to first vehicle raised was about six hours with two of our techs on site. We’ve had installs run twelve hours because a customer skipped the sequencing conversation.

Install day: what took longer than expected

Two things ate more time than we budgeted. First, the anchor bolts hit rebar on one column. Not a disaster — we shifted the column three-quarters of an inch, redrilled, and moved on — but it added forty minutes. If you have a slab poured with heavy rebar or post-tension cable, factor that into the day. Second, the overhead shutoff bar needed a bracket modification because his ceiling truss position didn’t match the standard mounting geometry. Nothing dangerous, just fabrication time.

The lesson we’ve learned installing this brand of car lift over hundreds of jobs is that the last ten percent of the install always has a curveball. We build a two-hour buffer into every quote. If your installer is telling you it’s a four-hour job flat, ask what happens when the curveball shows up. On this one, we finished the day, ran the safety cycle three times, and had him running his first lift-up before dinner.

The first oil pan gasket job on the new lift

Three weeks after install he had a customer’s F-350 in the shop with a leaking oil pan gasket. That was his first real test of the car lift for actual overhead work — not just moving a vehicle up and down, but reaching across a hot engine bay from underneath with wrenches. He called us halfway through the job with a question about arm-restraint override for pulling the pan out. We talked him through it in three minutes.

What he told us afterwards is what most first-year owners tell us: the lift changed how he thought about job pricing. A pan gasket that used to be a two-day fight on jack stands became a four-hour ticket. He raised his labor rate by fifteen dollars an hour on suspension and undercarriage jobs and the customers didn’t blink because the turnaround got faster. That is where a car lift pays for itself — not in the marketing brochure math, but in what you can charge for the same job.

Maintenance cadence in the first year

We recommend a quick monthly inspection and a proper annual service. In year one this shop did three fluid top-offs, one cable tension adjustment, and one safety-cam reset after a shop apprentice bumped the release. Zero seal leaks, zero cylinder issues, zero call-backs to us for warranty. That is the pattern we see on properly installed and lightly used lifts — the first year is almost entirely uneventful if the concrete and anchors were right.

The month-eleven service was the important one. We came back out, inspected all four cables, checked cylinder seals, verified the equalization was still true, and torqued the anchor bolts. Total time on site was about forty minutes. That annual is the difference between a fifteen-year lift and a seven-year lift.

What we would change the second time around

Two things. First, we would spec him a taller column option if we did it again. He fits everything he owns under it, but a rooftop-mounted RV accessory came in a year later that he couldn’t get under the overhead bar. Second, we would have pushed harder on the rolling floor jack accessory at the time of purchase. He bought one three months later at a higher price because the initial-order bundle discount was gone. Bundle your accessories at install — it almost always beats buying them piecemeal.

The rest we would repeat exactly. Two-post over four-post for his work mix, symmetric over asymmetric because he does full-body RV service and needs to walk around, overhead over baseplate because his ceiling could take it. Year one takeaway for anyone shopping now

The first year is a honeymoon if your foundation is right and a nightmare if it is not. Talk to your installer before the slab is poured, before the electrical is roughed in, and before the roof trusses are set.
