A collector in southeast Iowa emailed us a few winters back with a request we hear constantly: he wanted a car lift he could actually work under, but he also wanted to stack two vehicles in a 30×40 pole building with twelve-foot sidewalls and a concrete floor. Nothing heavier than a passenger car — 7,000 lb was plenty. He wanted to do his own brake service and rotor swaps instead of hauling cars to town. Twelve months later we went back out for the first annual service, and the conversation we had that day is the best answer we can give anyone shopping right now. This is that first year, start to finish, with the spec sheets he compared and what he’d do differently.

The Shopping Phase: Storage Lift or Service Lift?
His first instinct was a two-post, because that’s what he’d seen in every shop he’d ever waited in. We talked him out of it, and not because two-posts are bad — they’re the right answer for a shop billing hours. But his priorities were stacking a second vehicle underneath and long-term storage of cars that sit for months. A two-post holds a vehicle by the frame or pinch welds, which is fine for a workday and not what you want for six months of winter storage. A four-post carries the car on its own tires with the suspension loaded normally, drives on and off in seconds, and leaves the space underneath completely usable.
The trade-off is wheels-free access. On a four-post you can’t just pull a wheel — you need rolling jacks that bridge the runways and lift the axle off the deck. For brake service and rotor swaps, that’s non-negotiable, so we quoted the jacks with the lift instead of letting him discover the problem later. That’s the single most common regret we hear from home-garage buyers: they bought the four-post, skipped the rolling jacks to save money, and then couldn’t do the exact job they bought the car lift for. Buy them together. The jacks are a fraction of the equipment cost and they turn a storage rack into a working service platform.
Model Numbers and Spec Sheets, Side by Side
He narrowed it to three configurations, and the spec comparison is worth walking through because the numbers that matter aren’t the ones on the front of the brochure. First was a 7,000 lb four-post in the BendPak HD-7 family — roughly 105 inches overall height on the standard version, runway length in the 155 to 175 inch range depending on model, and a rise around 72 to 82 inches. Second was a 9,000 lb Atlas four-post, taller columns, longer runways, more capacity than he needed but noticeably more usable rise. Third was a wide-body 8,000 to 9,000 lb configuration with extended runways for a long-wheelbase car he’d been threatening to buy.
Here’s what we told him to compare. Overall height against his twelve-foot sidewalls minus any overhead door track and minus the truss depth at the actual lift location, not at the peak. Maximum rise, because that’s what determines whether you can stand under it or crouch. Runway width and length against wheelbase and track width of every car he owns plus the one he wants. Drive-through clearance between columns, which is where a wide car in a narrow-frame unit gets ugly. Capacity per corner, not just total. And the one everybody forgets: the height of the car on top plus the height of the car underneath plus the runway thickness. Do that arithmetic before you sign, because a car lift that technically fits the building doesn’t necessarily fit two vehicles.
Install Day in a 30×40 Pole Building
Pole buildings are our favorite and our least favorite install environment at the same time. Favorite because the floor is usually a fresh, clean pour with no forty years of trench drains and buried conduit. Least favorite because “I think the slab is four inches” turns out to be three and a half more often than anyone would like, and because the ceiling height at the ridge tells you nothing about the clearance under a truss chord.
The advantage of a four-post is that it’s freestanding — most home installs don’t require anchoring the way a two-post absolutely does, though we still recommend anchoring if the unit will live in one place and see regular service work. We do want a level, adequate slab. On this job we shimmed two columns to get the runways within tolerance, which is standard and completely normal; a lift that isn’t level in all four corners will bind the cables, wear the sheaves unevenly, and eventually stop lowering smoothly. We’ve taken calls from owners who installed their own equipment and then couldn’t get it level, and by the time we arrive the cables are already damaged. Getting a car lift set correctly takes a couple of hours and saves years. We also positioned the power unit on the column nearest his outlet, ran the crossover hoses in the runway channels, cycled it a dozen times empty, then loaded it and checked lock engagement at every position.
Months One Through Six: Storage Reality
The first six months were pure storage duty. He put a driver up top and rotated whatever project car he was fussing with underneath. Two things surprised him, and they surprise most first-year owners. The first was how much he used the drip trays. Anything with an older engine or a leaky rear main will mark up the car underneath, and the factory trays are cheap insurance. The second was fluid behavior in an unheated shop. Hydraulic fluid thickens in a cold pole building, and a January lift cycle is noticeably slower than a July one. That’s normal. What isn’t normal is a groaning power unit or jerky travel, which usually means the fluid is wrong for the temperature range or low.
He also learned the discipline that keeps four-post owners safe: always lower onto the mechanical locks and never leave a load hanging on hydraulics. Hydraulics hold a car until they don’t. We get emergency calls constantly from people with a vehicle stuck in the air because a cylinder started leaking — one memorable one from out of state, a black 7,000 lb four-post, brand unknown, no model number, car trapped overhead and no way to bring it down safely. If he’d parked it on the locks, the leak would have been an inconvenience instead of an emergency. Set the load on the locks every single time, listen for all four to engage, and give it a visual before you put a hand under a fender.
The First Real Brake Job: Rolling Jacks Earn Their Keep
Month seven he finally did the thing he bought the car lift for — front rotors and pads on a heavy sedan. Positioned the rolling jacks under the front subframe pickup points, pumped them up until the tires cleared the runway, and dropped the jack locks. He said the difference between doing that job on a lift versus on jack stands in a gravel driveway was worth the whole purchase by itself.
A few practical notes from that first service, because rotor swaps on a four-post have quirks. Jack placement matters more than on a two-post because you’re lifting a vehicle that’s already elevated; get the pads on real structural points and not on a floor pan or a plastic sill cover. Watch your total height — raising the car another eight inches off the runway on jacks eats into your ceiling clearance fast, which is one more argument for measuring honestly during the spec phase. Keep an eye on the runway deflection; it’s designed for it, but a heavy car with both jacks under one axle concentrates the load. Twelve-Month Service: What We Found and What It Cost
At the one-year mark we came back out for a full inspection. Findings were about what we expect on a lightly used home unit: cable tension had settled and needed a minor adjustment on two corners, one lock ladder had a slightly stiff release that cleaned up with lubrication, fluid was a touch low with no visible leak, and the anchors we’d installed were still tight. Nothing failed, nothing expensive. Total cost for the annual visit sits in the low hundreds for a home installation in southeast Iowa, and we’d rather see people spend that than skip it and find a frayed cable the hard way.
The bigger takeaway is what he told us at the end of the visit. He’d expected to regret not buying a bigger unit, and he didn’t — the 7,000 lb rating was right for passenger cars. What he did regret slightly was runway length. He’d bought standard runways and then bought a longer car, exactly the scenario we warn about, and now the front tires sit closer to the approach ramps than he’d like. That’s a spec decision you make once and live with for twenty years.
