The most useful thing we can show someone shopping for a car lift is what the first twelve months actually look like — not the brochure photo, but the sequencing decisions, the install-day surprises, and the first time you set toe on your own floor. A collector in the Quad Cities walked that whole path with us starting from an empty pole-building shell, and he kept notes. He wanted vehicle storage, he wanted to do his own alignment work instead of trailering cars two hours each way, and he had a hard budget. We supplied the equipment, did the install, and came back for the first service. Here’s the honest version of that year, including the parts he’d do differently.

Month One: Deciding Before the Concrete Cures

His building was a thirty-by-forty pole barn with twelve-foot sidewalls and a slab already poured. That’s a common starting point — plenty of Iowa and Illinois collectors build the shell first and figure out the equipment later. It works, but it costs you options. If he’d called us before the pour, we’d have had him thicken a section of slab and drop conduit and an air line exactly where the columns were going. Instead we worked with what existed, which meant an extension cord run and a surface-mounted air line for the first six months.

The bigger question was whether a four-post or a two-post fit his goals. He wanted to park one vehicle up and one underneath, which points hard toward a four-post — drive-on ramps, runways carrying the load through the tires, no anchoring strictly required, and a rated capacity around 8,000 or 9,000 lb, comfortably above the roughly 7,000 lb ceiling of anything in his collection. But he also wanted alignment work, and a standard storage four-post won’t do that without a couple of additions. We laid out both paths with real numbers. A two-post gives better wheels-free access for suspension work but eliminates the stacked-storage function entirely, and storage was the thing he’d been paying a facility for every month. The four-post won, with the understanding we’d spec it for alignment from the start rather than retrofit later.

Specifying a Four-Post for Alignment Work

A four-post used for alignment work needs three things a storage-only unit doesn’t. First, front slip plates — flat plates set into or on top of the runways that let the front tires float sideways while you set toe, instead of binding against the runway surface and giving you a false reading. Second, a set of rolling bridge jacks so you can take the wheels free of the runways for control-arm, tie-rod, or bushing work without moving the vehicle. Third, and most overlooked, real attention to runway levelness across the whole travel range.

That third point is where most home alignment attempts go wrong. A car lift that’s a half-inch out of level front to rear will let a modern imaging alignment head compensate to a point, but the geometry you’re measuring is only as trustworthy as the plane the vehicle sits on. We shim the base plates during install and check with a rotary laser at three heights, not just fully lowered. On his unit we found the slab dropped nearly three-eighths of an inch toward the overhead door — normal for a pole building with a drainage pitch — and shimmed the two front posts accordingly. We also set turnplate pockets in the runway locations he’d actually use. None of this is exotic, but it’s the difference between an alignment you can trust and one you chase for an afternoon.

Install Day and What Went Sideways

Install on a four-post is faster than a two-post because you’re not drilling twenty anchor holes into questionable concrete. Two of us had the columns standing, crossmembers set, runways placed, and cables routed in about five hours. The parts that ate the time weren’t the equipment — they were the building. The overhead door track hung lower than the drawings suggested, which shifted the whole footprint eighteen inches back and put one column closer to a workbench than he wanted. We caught it before anything was permanent, but that’s exactly why we measure the room ourselves instead of trusting a customer’s sketch.

The second surprise was electrical. A single 20-amp circuit was feeding the whole building, and the power unit shared it with a compressor and a space heater. Under load it browned out enough that the motor complained. He had an electrician pull a dedicated circuit the following week, and the difference in lift speed was immediately obvious. We tell everybody this: budget for a dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s requirement, and don’t run the lift and the compressor off the same breaker. Once power was sorted, we ran the unit through its full cycle a dozen times empty, verified all four locks engaged at the same slot, adjusted the cable tension so the runways rose dead level, and walked him through the lock-release sequence and the daily visual check. Total time on site, including the layout fix, was a long day.

Living With Stacked Storage

Two months in, the storage function was the part he mentioned most. A car parked on the runways and another underneath doubles floor capacity in a thirty-by-forty building, and that changes what a shop feels like to work in. With twelve-foot sidewalls, he had roughly enough clearance to put a low sports car up top and still open the doors on a sedan below — but only just. If your ceiling is under eleven feet, do the arithmetic carefully: runway height at the top lock, plus the height of the vehicle on top, plus a few inches of margin. We’ve had people discover the hard way that the upper car clears the ceiling but the raised hood does not.

He also added a set of drip trays, which we recommend to every collector storing a vehicle overhead. A forty-year-old car will mark the paint on whatever sits beneath it eventually. Caster kits are the other common add-on — they let you jack the whole unit up and roll it aside to free the floor. He skipped casters, and in hindsight said he’d have bought them, because there were a couple of weekends he wanted the middle of the shop clear for a project. A car lift that can be moved in ten minutes is genuinely more useful in a mixed-use building than one bolted in place, even if you only move it twice a year.

The First Alignment on His Own Floor

Around month five he did his first alignment at home — a restored coupe with new tie rods and fresh bushings that had been eating the inside edge of the front tires. He’d bought a mid-tier imaging system and had it calibrated. The whole job took him a little over two hours, most of which was learning the software rather than turning wrenches. The slip plates worked exactly as intended, and the numbers held when he rechecked after a test drive.

What he found valuable wasn’t the money saved on one alignment — it was being able to set a car, drive it, and reset it the same afternoon. Chasing a pull or a crooked wheel is iterative work, and paying shop rates for three passes gets old fast. That’s the real argument for alignment capability in a collector’s garage: not cost per job but the ability to iterate. He also noted that doing alignment work on a four-post is genuinely more comfortable than the two-post setups he’d used at friends’ shops, because you’re standing on the floor next to the wheel rather than reaching up. The tradeoff is you can’t do suspension teardowns wheels-free without the bridge jacks, so those aren’t optional if you’re serious. Year-One Service and What Wore

We came back at eleven months for the first real service. On a four-post that means four lifting cables inspected end to end, sheaves checked for grooving, lock latches cleaned and lubricated, the power unit fluid checked and topped, cylinder rod and seals looked over, and runway level re-verified. Everything was in good shape, which is what you’d expect from a unit cycled a few hundred times rather than a few thousand.

Two findings, both minor. One cable had lost a small amount of tension relative to the others — normal seating over the first year — and left one corner about an eighth of an inch low at the top lock. Five minutes with a wrench fixed it. And the lock latch nearest the overhead door was noticeably dirtier than the other three, from dust and road salt blowing in during winter. We cleaned and greased it and told him to do that one twice a year instead of once. The single biggest hydraulic failure we see on this class of equipment is a leaking cylinder, and we’ve taken emergency calls from people with a vehicle stuck in the air because the seals let go with no warning. Catching a weeping rod seal at an annual inspection is a cheap part and an hour of labor. Ignoring it is a bad afternoon. What He’d Do Differently

Asked to sum up the year, he had a short list. Plan the electrical and air before the slab, not after — a dedicated circuit and a drop where the power unit lives costs almost nothing during construction and is a nuisance later. Buy the caster kit up front; it’s cheaper bundled and you’ll want it. Order the drip trays with the unit rather than improvising with cardboard for four months. And measure the overhead door track, the light fixtures, and any ceiling fan before finalizing the footprint, because the drawings never show those.

The one thing he wouldn’t change was buying more capacity than he needed. His heaviest vehicle is well under 7,000 lb, and he bought a 9,000 lb unit anyway. That margin means the equipment isn’t working near its limit, the cables and cylinder see less stress, and if he ever buys a heavier truck the equipment doesn’t become the limiting factor. We give the same advice to every buyer, home or commercial: the incremental cost between capacity classes is small compared to the cost of outgrowing your equipment. A car lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-year purchase if you buy a good one and maintain it, and the thing you regret is almost never having bought a little more than you strictly needed.
