If you are shopping for a car lift that can handle alignment work in a farm shop, the decision between used and new gets complicated fast — and it gets complicated in ways that a general-purpose service lift never forces you to think about. We got a call last spring from a grain and cattle operation in northern Missouri that had two service bays in a converted machine shed and wanted to stop hauling pickups an hour into town every time the steering pulled. They had found a used four-post alignment rack three counties over for a fraction of new money. Good deal or expensive mistake? That depends on about a dozen things nobody mentions in the online listing. Alignment Work Changes What You Need From a Car Lift

A general service lift raises a vehicle. An alignment rack does that and then holds the vehicle rigid, level, and repeatable while you chase thousandths of an inch of toe. Those are different jobs. Any four-post will get a truck in the air, but only a purpose-built alignment rack has the machined turnplate pockets up front, the rear slip plates, and the runway flatness tolerance that lets an alignment head believe what it is seeing. If the runways sag under a three-quarter-ton pickup, your camber readings drift and you end up chasing a problem that lives in the equipment instead of the suspension.

That is the first thing we tell a farm shop looking at a used unit: confirm it was built as an alignment rack, not a storage or service four-post that somebody cut holes in. We have seen homemade turnplate pockets more than once, and they are almost always out of plane. The other alignment-specific piece is the jacking system. You need a set of rolling bridge jacks so you can lift the wheels off the runways to check ball joints and tie rod ends without dropping the vehicle. Retrofit jacks exist, but they have to match the runway width and the rail profile. Measure before you assume. A used car lift that needs a thousand dollars of jacks and a runway resurface is not the bargain it looked like on Saturday morning.

The Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist for a Used Rack

When somebody sends us photos of a used unit, here is what we look at in order. First, the columns — specifically the base plates and the bottom eighteen inches. That is where rust and impact damage live, and a bent base plate means the whole column is out of plumb. Second, the cables. On a four-post, four equalizer cables carry the load, and they are wear items. Look for broken strands at the sheave contact points, corrosion, and flattened spots. Cables are replaceable and not terribly expensive, but budget for a full set on any used rack of unknown history. Third, the sheaves themselves. Grooved, worn, or seized sheaves chew cables fast.

Fourth, the hydraulic cylinder and power unit. Cylinder seals fail, and when they fail with a vehicle in the air, you get the call we got from a shop in Florida last year — a vehicle stuck up on a leaking four-post with nobody able to bring it down safely. Check the cylinder rod for pitting and scoring, check the reservoir oil for milkiness, and run the unit through three full cycles listening for the pump loading unevenly. Fifth, the safety locks. Every position lock should engage audibly and simultaneously across all four columns. If one lags, the leveling is off. Sixth, ask for the data plate. No data plate means no capacity rating, no serial number, and no parts lookup. That alone has killed more used deals for our customers than any other single item.

What a Used Car Lift Actually Costs Once It Is In Your Shop

The sticker on a used rack is rarely the real number. Add teardown and rigging on the seller’s end — a four-post alignment rack is heavy, awkward, and usually anchored. Add transport, which for a full-length rack means a flatbed and a way to load it. Add reassembly, leveling, and shimming on your floor. Add cables if you did not get documentation. Add fluid, fittings, and probably a couple of hoses. Add a new set of turnplates if the originals are worn or missing, because used turnplates in bad shape will ruin your readings.

We have watched a used purchase land within fifteen percent of a new unit by the time everything was accounted for, and the buyer ended up with equipment that had no warranty and no clean parts path. That is the honest math. It does not always come out that way — we have also helped folks put a well-maintained rack from a closed dealership into a farm shop for a real savings, and it has run beautifully for years. The difference is documentation and condition, not luck. If the seller can tell you the brand, the model, the year, and show you that it has been inspected annually, a used unit is worth pursuing. Floor, Ceiling, and Building Requirements in a Farm Shop

Farm shops are our favorite install environment and also the one that surprises people most. Pole buildings often have thinner slabs than a commercial bay, and alignment racks concentrate load through four column base plates. We generally want a minimum of four inches of concrete at 3,000 PSI, and for heavier capacities we want more. If your slab was poured for equipment storage rather than anchored machinery, you may need cut-and-pour pads under each column. That is not a deal breaker; it is just a line item you want in the budget before the equipment shows up on a truck.

Ceiling height matters differently for alignment than for service. You are not going full rise as often, but you do need clearance for the tallest thing you will put on the rack plus the runway height plus the alignment cameras or targets if you are running a modern imaging system. A twelve-foot sidewall in a pole building is workable for most passenger and light truck alignment work, but check your truss bottom chord, not just the wall height. Also plan your bay layout around the rack length — an alignment rack plus approach ramps plus room to open doors is a longer footprint than people picture. Then there is power. Most four-post car lift power units run single-phase 220V, and a lot of farm shops have the service but not a dedicated circuit near the column. Get an electrician’s number before install day, not during.

When New Makes More Sense Than Used

There are three situations where we push people toward new even when a used unit is available. The first is when you plan to run the equipment commercially. If customers are paying you for alignments, the liability picture changes, and a new rack with a current warranty, a legible data plate, and ANSI/ALI certification is worth the premium. Insurance conversations go easier too. The second is when you want modern features — integrated air lines, LED lighting in the runways, wireless jack controls, taller lift heights. Those did not exist on racks built twenty years ago and cannot be added later.

The third situation is parts availability. Brands consolidate and models get discontinued. When we work on Rotary or Challenger equipment, we can usually get parts for older units because those brands support their installed base well, but off-brand racks from defunct importers can be genuinely unsupportable. A shop in Indiana called us because a self-installed unit would not sit level, and half the diagnostic time went into figuring out who even made it. If the used car lift you are eyeing carries a name you cannot find a parts diagram for, the savings are borrowed against a future breakdown. New equipment from a supported brand is boring in the best possible way — you know exactly who to call and what the part is called when something wears out five years from now.

Capacity, Length, and the Trucks You Actually Work On

Farm shops almost never work on just cars. Between one-ton duallies, service trucks, and the occasional trailer, capacity planning for a rural shop looks nothing like a suburban home garage. We ask people to name the heaviest and longest vehicle they expect to align, then add margin. A 12,000 lb rack sounds like plenty until you put a loaded crew cab diesel on it and realize you are at eighty percent of rating with the toolbox and fuel. For most northern Missouri and southern Iowa farm shops handling pickups up to one ton, we land on 12,000 to 14,000 lb capacity with extended runways.

Runway length is the sneaky spec. Standard alignment runways handle a typical wheelbase, but long-bed crew cabs can hang off the back, which puts the rear axle outside the slip plate range and makes thrust angle measurement useless. Extended-length runways cost more up front and are impossible to add later. The same goes for turnplate pocket position — if the pockets are set for passenger car wheelbases, you cannot move them. This is the single most common reason we see a used deal fall apart on inspection: the rack is fine, but the geometry does not match the vehicles the buyer needs to service. Measure your longest truck, wheel center to wheel center, and compare it against the spec sheet before anything else. Getting It Installed, Certified, and Actually Working

Whichever way you go, installation determines whether the equipment does alignment-grade work or just holds a truck in the air. Leveling is the whole ballgame. We shim each column until the runways are within a tight tolerance across their length and diagonally, then verify with a laser and re-check after the first few loaded cycles because everything settles. Anchor torque gets checked, cables get tensioned equally so all four locks engage together, and the hydraulic system gets bled properly so you do not get a soft spot on the way up.

After that, plan on annual inspection. ALI-certified inspection is required in some commercial contexts and is simply good practice everywhere else — cables stretch, anchors loosen, locks wear. We do inspections across Iowa and into the surrounding states, and about a third of what we find is a cable that would have failed within a year. If you are buying used, have the inspection done at install rather than a year later, so you know exactly what you bought. And keep the paperwork. When you sell the shop or the equipment someday, documented maintenance on a car lift is worth real money to the next buyer, which is exactly the position you wish the seller had been in when you were the one asking questions.
