Why a collector still wants a two-post car lift
The instinct for a car collector storing multiple vehicles is often to buy a four-post. Four-posts are drive-on, drive-off, no pad-point thinking required, and they let you park a car indefinitely without stressing the tires. All true. But for a collector who actually works on his own cars, including brake service, differential fluid, and occasional carburetor rebuilds under the hood at chest height, a two-post car lift is the better first purchase. Wheels are exposed to the tech. Underbody is open. Working plane changes with a button press instead of a floor jack and stands.
The western Illinois collector chose a Rotary SPO10 for exactly this reason. He wanted to work on the cars, not just store them. Storage happens in the surrounding bays on their own wheels. The lift bay is for active service. That is the mental model we recommend for any collector planning a shop build: reserve one bay for a working two-post lift and keep the other bays as drive-in storage. First lift: the arm-restraint learning curve
Arm restraints are the pins that lock the two-post lift’s arms in place so they do not swing while a vehicle is raised. Every quality lift has them. Every quality lift requires the tech to physically engage them before raising the vehicle: pin drops into a matching slot on the arm assembly, locking rotation. Skip this step and the arms can swing under vehicle weight, which is how vehicles come off lifts and hit shop floors. This is the number-one preventable failure mode in a two-post service environment, and it is entirely a human-process issue.
The western Illinois collector spent his first month figuring out the arm-restraint routine. Position the arms under the vehicle’s pad points. Pull the pin. Confirm the pin drops fully. Test-tug the arm to verify it is locked. Then hit the up button. Every time, every vehicle, every lift cycle. It becomes muscle memory by month two. But for a first-year owner, the discipline of the pin check is the single most important safety habit to build. We tell every new car lift customer the same thing: if you ever raise a vehicle and cannot remember whether you pinned the restraints, lower it back down and check. Every time. No exceptions.
Safety-cam engagement: what the clunk means
Safety cams, sometimes called mechanical locks, are the ratchet system that engages as the lift rises, catching the columns at fixed positions so the lift cannot drop even if hydraulic pressure fails. On a Rotary SPO10, you hear an audible clunk every couple of inches as the vehicle rises. That clunk is the safety cam engaging the next tooth. It is the sound of the lift becoming mechanically safe at each incremental height, and it should never be treated as noise to ignore during a rise cycle.
At full lift height, the operator releases the up button and slightly lowers the vehicle onto the nearest cam tooth. That deliberate settle onto the cam is what carries the vehicle’s weight, not the hydraulic pressure. The hydraulic side is just for raising and lowering. The cams are what hold the load. New car lift owners often miss this and worry that a lift held by hydraulic pressure alone is unsafe. It would be, but it is not. Every commercial two-post cycles onto the mechanical locks before service begins. That is the design, and it is why lift safety is fundamentally mechanical rather than hydraulic in nature.
Differential fluid service on classic Detroit iron
Classic American cars, including Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, Chargers, and GTOs, have solid rear axles with straightforward differential fluid service. Drain plug on the bottom of the differential housing (if the manufacturer installed one), or pull the cover if not. The 1968 Chevelle in the western Illinois collection has a 12-bolt rear that takes about 2 quarts of GL-5 gear oil. Service interval by most guidance is every 30,000 miles or every 3 years on a car that gets occasional use rather than daily-driven mileage.
The collector runs differential fluid service on every car in his collection annually. That is more frequent than technically required, but he prefers the peace of mind. On a car lift at 60 inches of rise, he can drain, inspect the magnetic plug (or the pumpkin cover for rear ends without a drain), clean, gasket-check, and refill in about 45 minutes per axle. Doing that on jack stands would take him twice as long and hurt his back for a week afterward. That is the practical case for a car lift in any private collector’s shop: the ergonomics of routine service across a rotating collection of vehicles pay back the investment.
Month six: arm-restraint pin check
At the six-month mark, every arm-restraint pin needs a wear inspection. Pins are consumable: they are steel dropping into a steel slot hundreds of times per year, and eventually the tolerances loosen. A pin that used to drop cleanly with a satisfying click starts to feel sloppy. That is when you replace it, before the sloppy becomes loose enough that the pin does not lock reliably in the arm slot under load. This is a preventive replacement, not a reactive one.
The collector did his first six-month pin check with us on the phone, using photos to document each pin’s condition. Three pins looked new. One passenger-side rear pin looked slightly worn on the engagement face, not urgent, but on the watch list for the next check. We shipped him a spare set of four pins the same day so they would be on his shelf when he needed them. Rotary parts run modestly per pin. Cheap insurance. Every car lift owner should keep a set of spare arm-restraint pins in their shop. When one wears out, you swap it in the next scheduled maintenance window, not scramble for shipping.
Storage above, service below: dual-use in one bay
The western Illinois collector uses his SPO10 bay for both service and occasional overnight storage. Meaning: when a car is up for a differential service that takes multiple days to complete (fresh gasket cure, waiting on parts), the car stays on the lift overnight. That is fine, the mechanical locks hold the vehicle indefinitely without hydraulic pressure, but there is a discipline to it. The bay is not available for other work while a car is up. Storage above, service below only works when the collector does not need the bay for anything else that day.
For a collector with eleven vehicles, that occasional dual-use is fine. For a shop with three techs and five cars per day, it would be a bottleneck. The lesson: a car lift can serve as short-term overnight storage when a job requires it, but you do not design the shop around that assumption. Design it around the primary use case, which is active service, and treat the storage capability as a bonus. Every collector shop we have built has some variation of this pattern. Nobody regrets the flexibility of having the option available when a service job stretches into two or three days.

Three things. First, buy a two-post before a four-post if you plan to work on the cars yourself. The service ergonomics justify the pad-point learning curve. Third, keep spare arm-restraint pins on the shelf. They are the one wear item that should not ever leave you waiting on freight when a scheduled maintenance window opens up on a weekend.
