Start With What You Are Actually Going to Do Under the Vehicle
Differential service is a low-drama job that quietly dictates a lot of equipment decisions. You need the vehicle level so the fill level reads correctly, you need enough clear height to get a pump bottle and a drain pan under the housing, and you need to be able to reach the front diff, transfer case, and rear diff without repositioning anything. A drive-on four-post handles this beautifully because the vehicle sits on its own suspension, level, and you are not fighting arm placement. A two-post gives you better wheel access if you also do brakes and rotors, but it takes longer to set up for a quick fluid change.
Why does this belong in a warranty article? Because how you use the equipment determines which warranty terms matter. Most manufacturers write structural coverage on the steel for five years or more, hydraulic and mechanical components for one to two years, and electrical for a shorter window. If your plan is a dozen lift cycles a year for fluid service and storage, a shorter hydraulic warranty is a smaller risk than it would be in a busy shop cycling forty times a day. Match the coverage to the duty cycle, not to whichever spec sheet has the biggest number printed on it.
Read the Duty Classification Before the Warranty Length
Warranty length is meaningless without the usage language buried underneath it. Nearly every residential-grade unit carries a clause limiting coverage to non-commercial, light-duty use. That is fine if you are the only person turning a wrench in your building. It becomes a problem the day you start doing side work for neighbors and someone gets hurt, or the day you file a claim and the manufacturer asks whether the equipment has been used for compensation. Be honest with yourself at purchase time. If there is any chance the equipment sees paying work, buy a commercial-rated unit from the start.

Manuals are specific for a reason. They tell you minimum concrete thickness and strength, minimum cure time on fresh concrete, anchor embedment depth, torque values, plumb tolerance on the columns, and cable tension procedure. Skip any one of those and you have created an argument the manufacturer will win. Professional installation, documented with a commissioning checklist, is what preserves the coverage you paid for. It also gives you a second benefit people undervalue: someone who has seen a hundred of these knows immediately when a column is a quarter inch out or a lock is not engaging on both sides. The Documentation You Need Before You Ever File a Claim
Here is the folder every owner should have and almost nobody does. The original invoice with model and serial number. Photographs of the data plate on the column, taken the week it was installed, before twenty years of grease and sun make it unreadable. The installation manual, physically, in the building. The commissioning or torque documentation from whoever installed it. And a maintenance log — dated entries for cable inspections, lock function checks, fluid changes, and anything you adjusted.
That last item is what separates a smooth claim from a fight. Manufacturers write maintenance obligations into the warranty: inspect cables periodically, check lock engagement, keep fluid at level and clean, grease what the manual says to grease. If a cable fails and you cannot show any evidence you ever looked at it, the denial writes itself. If you have three years of dated inspection notes, the conversation is about the part, not about you. Remember the caller with the vehicle stranded in the air on a leaking cylinder and no idea what brand he owned? That situation cost him a service call, an emergency lowering, and a full-price replacement cylinder, all because nobody ever wrote anything down. Ten minutes with a phone camera on install day would have changed the outcome entirely. Keep the folder. It costs nothing.
How a Claim Actually Moves, Step by Step
People imagine warranty claims as a form you submit and then wait. In practice, on the equipment we support, it looks like this. You call us and describe the symptom. We ask for model, serial, install date, and photos or a short video of the failure. Often we diagnose it on that call — a lift that stops three feet from the floor is usually a lock or safety issue, not a hydraulic one, and a unit that hums without lifting is often a fluid level or check valve problem you can address yourself in twenty minutes.
If it is genuinely a covered part failure, we open the claim with the manufacturer using the serial number and install record, they authorize replacement, and the part ships. Labor is the part homeowners misjudge. Most residential warranties cover the part but not the trip charge or the wrench time, so budget for that. Commercial coverage sometimes includes a labor allowance for the first year. Turnaround on common wear items — cables, cylinders, lock assemblies, power units — is usually days, because we stock them and because we would rather get you running than wait on a factory shipment. On the odd orphan brand with no domestic parts support, we frequently end up sourcing a compatible cylinder or cable and getting the equipment safe again outside the warranty system entirely. Questions to Ask the Seller Before You Pay
Print these and use them. What exactly is covered structurally, hydraulically, and electrically, and for how long each? Does the coverage change if I install it myself? Is there any labor allowance, or is it parts only? Who is the authorized service network in Iowa, and can you name someone within driving distance? Are cables, locks, cylinders, and power units stocked domestically, and what is typical lead time? What maintenance am I required to document to keep coverage valid? Is the warranty transferable if I sell the building?
That last one surprises people. Home shops change hands, and a transferable warranty is a genuine selling point on a property with a well-equipped garage. If the seller hesitates on any of these questions, that hesitation is your answer. We would rather lose a sale than put a customer on equipment we cannot support two years from now. Measure before you shop. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, including lights and heaters. Slab thickness if you know it, and slab age. Bay width and how the overhead door swings. Then write down every vehicle you own and every vehicle you expect to own in ten years, with curb weights. That list is what drives capacity, and it is why we so often talk people out of the 7,000 pound unit they came in asking for and into a 9,000 or 10,000 pound model — the price gap is smaller than people expect and the margin buys you peace of mind under a three-quarter ton pickup.
Then plan the electrical and the finishing details. A dedicated 220 circuit with the right breaker size, a decision about which corner the power unit hangs on, and a thought about where hoses and cables route so you are not draping them across a walkway. Budget for professional installation and for a spare set of cables at some point down the road.
