A car lift in a European marque specialty shop lives a harder life than most people assume, and the arm restraints are usually the first thing to tell you about it. We spend a lot of time in central Iowa shops that work almost exclusively on Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Volvo, and the pattern is remarkably consistent: the columns are fine, the cables are fine, the motor runs, but the arm restraint gears are chewed, the safety cams are lazy, and the technician has quietly stopped trusting the click. That distrust turns into sloppy alignment work, and sloppy alignment work turns into comebacks. This article is about the myths we hear most often on those service calls, and what the reality actually looks like when we get the covers off.

Myth: Arm Restraints Are Just a Formality

The most common thing we hear on a European specialty floor is that arm restraints are a legal box to check rather than a working safety system. That belief usually comes from experience with worn hardware. When the restraint gear teeth are rounded off and the pin drops halfway, the arm still swings a little under load, so the technician concludes the restraint never did anything in the first place. It did. A healthy restraint locks the arm into a fixed radius the moment weight settles onto the pad, and that lock is what keeps the pad from walking off a pinch weld when the car shifts during a suspension pull.

European chassis make this more important, not less. A lot of these vehicles have narrow, precisely located jacking points with plastic covers, and the correct pad contact patch is small. If the arm can creep even a quarter inch while a technician is torquing a subframe bolt or leaning into a control arm, the pad edge loads the seam instead of the reinforced point. We have replaced restraint gears in central Iowa shops where the teeth were worn flat and the owner had never once considered them a wear item. They are. Inspect them on every annual, and replace them the moment the arm can be rotated by hand under load without lifting the pin.

Myth: If the Safety Cams Click, Everything Is Fine

A clicking safety cam is reassuring, but the click only tells you the pawl passed a tooth. It does not tell you the pawl seated, and it does not tell you both columns seated at the same height. That distinction matters enormously on alignment work, because an unequal safety engagement puts the car on a plane that is off by a fraction of a degree from side to side. On a straightforward brake job nobody notices. On a four-wheel alignment with a car that spec sheets to a tenth of a degree of camber, it shows up as numbers that will not settle and a steering wheel that comes back crooked.

The honest test is simple and takes ten seconds. Raise to working height, lower onto the safeties deliberately, then walk both columns and confirm the pawls are fully into the same corresponding tooth on each side. If one side is a notch high, the lift needs equalization service before it does alignment work again. We also check the pawl springs, because a stretched or corroded spring will let the pawl ride the ladder instead of dropping in cleanly. On older units the safety linkage rod can bind inside the column where nobody looks. Any car lift used for precision work deserves that check on a set schedule rather than the day something feels wrong.

Myth: Alignment Accuracy Is All About the Rack, Not the Car Lift

Shops invest heavily in alignment equipment and then run it on a base that has never been surveyed. The equipment is only as honest as the plane it sits on. If the runways or the four contact pads are not coplanar, the machine reads a chassis that is being twisted by the lift itself, and every correction chases a moving target. We have set up shops where the alignment numbers were blamed on the head calibration for two years, and the actual problem was a settled slab under one column with a shim stack that had rusted loose.

For European work we recommend surveying the pad plane with a laser or a good rotary level at installation and then again annually. Note the readings in the maintenance log so you have a baseline. If a column has moved, you will see it as a trend rather than a surprise. On four-post alignment setups, check runway level empty and then loaded, because deflection under a heavy sedan or a large SUV tells you more than a static reading does. Anchor bolts matter here too. A car lift with two loose anchors on one column will not fall over, but it will flex just enough under a lateral push to ruin repeatability, and that flex is invisible unless you put a dial on it.

Myth: Any Adapter Will Work on a European Chassis

This is where we see the most expensive damage. Shops buy a stack of generic round rubber pads, stick them on the arms, and call it universal. European jacking points frequently require a slotted pinch weld adapter, a tall stack for low ground clearance, or a flat plate with a specific relief. Using a plain round pad on a pinch weld crushes the seam. Using a short stack on a low car means the arm body contacts the rocker before the pad reaches the point. Both problems get blamed on the vehicle rather than the adapter kit.

Build an adapter cart and keep it organized by height. We usually recommend a set of slotted pinch weld adapters, a set of tall stackable extensions, and a couple of flat truck adapters for the occasional heavier chassis, all rated for the arm they mount to. Height matters for another reason: adapters raise the vehicle away from the arm, which increases the leverage on the restraint gear. If you run six inches of stack routinely, your restraints will wear faster than the shop across town that runs bare pads on pickups. That is not a defect, it is physics, and it means your inspection interval should be shorter. Keep spare adapters in stock, because a shop that runs out will improvise with a block of wood, and that is how cars come off lifts.

Myth: A Two-Post Is Always the Wrong Choice for Alignment

Plenty of specialty shops assume alignment demands a dedicated four-post rack with turnplates and slip plates, full stop. For high-volume general service that is true. But a European marque shop doing a dozen alignments a week alongside heavy suspension and brake work often gets more out of a well-anchored two-post plus a separate alignment bay than out of trying to make one machine do everything. The two-post gives wheels-free access for control arms, bushings and subframe work, which is the bulk of what actually generates hours in that kind of shop.

The trade-off is that a two-post demands more discipline on arm placement and restraint condition, because the load path is four small points instead of two continuous runways. That brings us back to the restraints. If you are going to run suspension work on a two-post, the restraint gears, pins and springs are not optional maintenance, they are the safety system doing its job every hour of the day. We service both configurations across central Iowa and we do not push shops toward one or the other on principle. We ask what the work mix looks like, what the ceiling height is, and whether the slab will take asymmetric anchor loading. Then we recommend the car lift that fits the actual business rather than the brochure.

What We Actually Check on an Annual Inspection

Our annual inspection on a European shop car lift starts at the floor and works up. We verify anchor torque on every bolt, look for slab cracking radiating from the base plates, and check shim stacks for movement. Then we go to the arms: restraint gear tooth condition, pin engagement depth, spring tension, and whether the arm has any vertical play at the pivot. Vertical play at the pivot is a bushing issue and it will make the restraint feel loose even when the gear is fine, which sends people chasing the wrong part.

From there we run the lift through full travel and listen. Safety pawls should click evenly on both sides at the same rate. Cables get inspected for broken strands, corrosion at the terminations, and correct equalization tension. Hydraulic lines get a visual for weeping fittings, and the cylinder rod gets checked for pitting that will chew a seal. We look at the power unit reservoir level and fluid condition, because dark, hot fluid tells us the unit is working harder than it should. Finally we test the overhead shutoff bar and the lowering interlocks. The whole thing takes under two hours on most units and it is the cheapest insurance a specialty shop can buy. Getting Parts Fast When Something Fails Mid-Job

The calls we take most often are not planned maintenance, they are a technician with a car in the air and something that will not release. A leaking cylinder, a safety that will not disengage, an arm restraint pin that seized in the up position. In a European specialty shop those emergencies are worse than average because the vehicle stuck overhead is usually a customer car with a scheduled delivery. The fix is almost always a part we already stock, but the delay is in identifying the right one when nobody knows the model or serial.

Do yourself a favor and photograph the data plate on every car lift in your building today. Serial number, model, capacity, manufacture date. Keep those photos somewhere the whole crew can reach them.
