He wanted storage too. What followed was a genuinely instructive first year — the install headaches, the moment he realized rolling jacks weren’t optional, the first service call at month seven, and what he learned about resale when a neighbor tried to buy it off him.

Why exhaust and driveline work drives the whole decision
Exhaust and driveline jobs have a specific requirement that brake and suspension jobs don’t: you need the vehicle at full ride height, wheels loaded, with total unobstructed access down the centerline from the manifold flange to the rear axle. Driveline angles change when a vehicle hangs by its frame with the suspension drooping. If you’re chasing a vibration, measuring pinion angle, or shimming a carrier bearing, you need those angles to be the same on the lift as they are on the road. A two-post lifts by the pinch welds and lets everything hang. That’s fine for wheels-off work and wrong for driveline diagnosis.
That pushed him toward a four-post with open runways and a clear center bay. He went with a 9,000 lb model, which handled his heaviest vehicle with margin and cleared the 11-foot ceiling in his shop. Full-length exhaust replacement on a 1970s sedan turned into a genuinely pleasant afternoon instead of a fight with jack stands. He could sit on a creeper under the whole centerline, cut and fit hangers, and set the driveshaft with the suspension loaded exactly as it sits in the driveway. When people ask us what kind of car lift they need, the real question is always what kind of work they do most, and for this owner the answer pointed one direction from the start.
Install day: an 11-foot ceiling and a garage door in the way
Two problems showed up on the site visit. First, his ceiling was 11 feet at the trusses but he had a light fixture and a garage door opener rail hanging into the working envelope. Four-posts need clearance for the full rise of the runways plus the height of whatever’s on them, and the tallest vehicle in his fleet was a lifted pickup. We worked out a usable rise that let him get the sedans up to a comfortable working height without a runway strike, and he relocated two light fixtures before we came back with the equipment.
Second problem: slab. A four-post spreads load across four base plates and doesn’t demand the same anchoring depth as a two-post, but it does demand a level plane. His slab had almost two inches of fall across the footprint because it was poured to drain toward the door. We shimmed accordingly, which is completely normal, but the shim stack under one post was tall enough that we used engineered steel shims rather than the thin plates that ship in the box. Level matters more than people think on a four-post — an out-of-level frame binds the cables, wears sheaves unevenly, and makes the vehicle want to roll. If you’ve ever seen an owner-installed lift that won’t sit level, and we see those constantly from DIY installs, that’s the root cause about nine times out of ten.
Rolling jacks are not an accessory
He bought the lift without rolling jacks to save money. By month two he’d ordered a pair. Here’s why: even when your main use case is exhaust and driveline, you still need wheels off sometimes — rotating tires, pulling a brake drum to get at a parking brake cable, dropping an axle shaft to replace a seal. Without rolling jacks, a four-post means wheels stay on, full stop. With them, you get both modes from one machine, and that’s the actual argument for a four-post as a do-everything home lift.
Two things to know before you buy them. One, rolling jacks subtract from your usable capacity, because the jacks and their weight sit on the runways. If you’re at 9,000 lb rated and your heaviest vehicle is 7,000, that’s fine. If you bought right at the edge of your capacity, you’ve got a problem. Two, rolling jacks need the runways set at the right width for your narrowest vehicle, and they need the frame contact points to actually exist — some unibody cars want specific adapters. Buy the jacks at the same time you buy the lift and have us set the runway spacing once, correctly, instead of moving them later. Month seven: a leaking cylinder and a car stuck in the air
The call we dread came in October. Vehicle up, exhaust half cut off, and the hydraulic cylinder was weeping past the seal badly enough that the runways were creeping down. He did the right thing immediately: lowered onto the mechanical safety locks so the vehicle was resting on steel and not on hydraulic pressure, and then called us. That distinction is the whole ballgame. A four-post’s locks are what actually hold the load, and hydraulics only move it. Owners who don’t know that panic when they see fluid, and we’ve had genuinely urgent calls — one memorable one from Florida where a homeowner had a car in the air on an unbranded black four-post, a leaking cylinder, and no way to bring it down.
His fix was straightforward because he’d bought a brand with documentation. We pulled the serial number off the data plate, matched the cylinder bore and stroke, and had a seal kit and a replacement cylinder quoted the same afternoon. He chose the full cylinder over a reseal because the bore had light scoring. Two days later the lift was back in service. Total downtime, under a week. If that had been a mystery import with no legible plate, we’d have been measuring the old cylinder and hunting for a match, and he’d have had a vehicle parked in the air for a month. Maintenance rhythm that keeps a four-post honest
After the cylinder, he got religious about inspection, and his routine is now the one we recommend to every home-shop owner in eastern Iowa. Every time he uses it: eyeball the four cables at the sheaves for broken strands or fraying, look at the base of each post for fluid, and listen for the locks to click on all four corners before going under. Once a quarter: check the power unit reservoir level, wipe down and inspect the cylinder rod, look at the sheave bearings for play, and verify the lift sits level across the runways with a spirit level.
Annually: we come out. Cables get properly tensioned and equalized, locks get inspected for wear on the dog and the ladder, hydraulic fluid gets checked for water and contamination, hoses get inspected at the crimps where they always fail first, and anchors get re-torqued. On a four-post used mostly for storage plus occasional service, an annual visit is genuinely adequate. On a commercial installation running all day, we’d be there twice a year minimum. The one thing we push hardest: don’t store a vehicle up in the air for six months on hydraulic pressure. Lower onto the locks. It takes ten seconds, it removes the load from the seals, and it’s the single biggest factor in whether your cylinder makes it to year fifteen.
Trade-in and resale: what a used lift is actually worth
Month eleven, a neighbor with a new shop asked to buy it. That’s when he learned what we tell people constantly: a professionally installed, name-brand car lift with documentation is one of the best-holding pieces of shop equipment you can own. A well-maintained four-post from a recognized manufacturer typically resells for somewhere in the range of sixty to seventy-five percent of what it cost new, and that’s after years of use. Compare that to a treadmill or a table saw. The used market in Iowa is genuinely tight — every farm shop, every home restorer, every small independent garage wants one and there aren’t enough coming available.
What moves the number: legible serial plate and original manual, documented service history, original adapters and rolling jacks included, and cables that don’t look like a bird’s nest. What kills it: unknown brand, no data plate, visible cable damage, evidence of a DIY install into questionable concrete.
