A racing team crew chief outside Cedar Rapids called us in the middle of a build season with a specific problem: his crew was spending more time crawling than wrenching. They were fabricating headers and swapping driveshafts on a dirt late model and a couple of street cars, and the only car lift in the shop was a drive-on four-post they had bought used for storage. It held the car fine. It also put the frame rails right where the welder needed to be and blocked every angle on the transmission tunnel. That call turned into a two-hour conversation about capacity, rise, runway versus arms, and — because he had been burned once already — exactly what a warranty covers and how you file a claim without losing a week of shop time.

Start with the work, not the budget
Most people start shopping with a dollar figure in mind, and that is backwards. Start with the three or four jobs you do most often, because those jobs eliminate options faster than price does. Exhaust fabrication and driveline work share one requirement above all others: unobstructed access to the centerline of the vehicle from the front crossmember to the rear axle. You need to get a torch, a welding helmet, and both hands under there, and you need the vehicle high enough that you are standing rather than kneeling.
That requirement kills the drive-on four-post for primary use. The runways sit directly under the rockers and frame rails, which is exactly where you want to be when you are hanging a mid-pipe or dropping a two-piece driveshaft with a center carrier bearing. It also makes a low-rise scissor marginal — great for wheels and brakes, wrong for anything that needs you fully upright underneath. What is left for a fab-heavy shop is a two-post arrangement with swing arms and a full rise in the six-foot range, or a four-post with an open-center runway design if storage is a co-equal priority. When the crew chief laid out his actual job mix, roughly seventy percent of his hours were spent under the car, and that number made the decision for him before we ever talked money.
Asymmetric, symmetric, or overhead: the configuration branch
Once you land on a two-post, the next branch is column geometry. Symmetric arrangements place the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms, which distributes load evenly and works well for trucks and heavier vehicles. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses short front arms and long rear arms, setting the car back so the doors open past the posts. For a race shop where the crew is in and out of the driver’s seat forty times a day, door clearance is not a luxury.
Then there is clear-floor versus baseplate. Clear-floor runs the hydraulic hose and equalization cables through an overhead beam, leaving nothing on the ground to trip a cart or catch a floor jack. Baseplate runs everything through a low plate between the columns, which keeps the total height down for a shop with a low ceiling but puts a small ramp in your walking path. For exhaust work specifically we lean clear-floor, because you are dragging a pipe bender, a plasma cart, and a MIG unit around the vehicle constantly and every obstruction costs you. The one exception is a garage with under about eleven and a half feet of clearance to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler head, unit heater, or door track — where a baseplate or a versymmetric low-height design becomes the honest answer. We measure that number during the survey rather than trusting the ceiling height on the building plan, because those two numbers are almost never the same.
Capacity and rise: what the numbers actually mean
Capacity ratings get misread constantly. A 10,000 lb rating is the total load, not the per-arm load, and it assumes the load is distributed within the manufacturer’s specified front-to-rear split. A race car weighing 2,600 pounds is nowhere near a capacity limit, but the tow vehicle that hauls it might be. We ask every buyer what the heaviest thing they will ever put in the air is, then we size for that, because nobody wants to explain to a customer why their dually cannot go up. For a mixed race shop the sweet spot is usually 10,000 or 12,000 lb, which gets you generous margin on passenger cars and real capability on a three-quarter-ton hauler.
Rise is the number that matters more for driveline work and gets ignored more often. Entry-level equipment sometimes tops out around sixty-nine inches of pad height; the better commercial units reach into the mid-seventies. Four or five inches sounds trivial until you are holding a driveshaft over your head. If your techs are six feet tall, the difference between working with a straight back and working with a bent neck is measured in exactly those inches, and it shows up as fatigue and quality problems by the end of a long night before a race weekend. Also check the collapsed height of the arms and pads — a low-slung race car with three inches of ground clearance cannot get over a tall arm without ramps, and that is a daily annoyance. This is the layer of detail that separates a car lift you tolerate from one that makes the shop faster.
The budget tiers, honestly described
We will not quote exact prices in an article because freight, configuration, and site conditions move the number too much, but the tiers are real and worth understanding. The entry tier is a home-and-hobby two-post, often with a shorter rise, lighter columns, a two-year structural warranty, and a shorter list of included adapters. It works for a guy doing his own maintenance on weekends. It is not built for eight hours of daily cycling.
The middle tier is where most serious shops land: a commercial-grade 10K or 12K unit from a brand with real ALI certification, a five-year structural warranty, one to two years on hydraulics and electrical, and a parts network that actually exists. The top tier adds heavier steel, higher capacity, taller columns, and options like rolling jacks, drip trays, and integrated air lines. For a race team we usually recommend the middle tier plus one option — either a taller column for rise or a set of truck adapters — rather than jumping to the top tier and skipping the accessories. The install cost is a separate line item, and so is concrete remediation if the slab tests thin. When we quote, all of that is broken out, because a car lift budget that hides the concrete work is not a real budget. We would rather have an uncomfortable conversation at quote time than a change order at install time.
What a car lift warranty actually covers
Here is where buyers get surprised. Almost every warranty in this industry is split into three buckets with three different terms. Structural — columns, arms, carriages, welded assemblies — usually gets the headline number, five years being common on commercial equipment. Hydraulic components like the cylinder, power unit, and pump typically get one or two years. Wear items are covered for essentially nothing: rubber pads, decals, arm restraint gears, and often the equalization cables are considered consumables.
Just as important is what voids coverage. Improper installation is the number one denial reason we see. We regularly get calls from people in other states who installed equipment themselves, discovered the arms do not level or the carriages bind, and then found the manufacturer unwilling to help because there is no documented install and no torque record on the anchors. Insufficient concrete is the second reason. Using the equipment outside its rated capacity or with unapproved adapters is the third. And a hydraulic cylinder that has been run dry, contaminated, or overheated because nobody ever checked the fluid level is not a warranty item — that is maintenance. None of this is unreasonable, but you need to know it going in, because it changes how you handle the install and the first-year service on your car lift.
The claim workflow, step by step
When something fails, speed comes from documentation you gathered before the failure. Step one is the data plate: serial number, model, and manufacture date, photographed and stored somewhere that is not a shop wall covered in grease. Step two is the install record — who anchored it, when, and the anchor torque values. Step three, at the moment of failure, is photos and video of the symptom before anyone starts taking things apart. A short clip of a carriage hanging up at the same height every cycle tells a manufacturer’s tech support engineer more than a paragraph ever will.
From there, we handle the filing for equipment we sold or service. We open the case, submit the serial and photos, and push for a parts shipment rather than a lengthy inspection cycle. On a leaking cylinder we usually know within a day whether it is a covered failure or a seal-and-rebuild situation, and we can ship a replacement seal kit or cylinder while the paperwork moves. The important part is not stopping work while you wait. We have gotten frantic calls — one from a shop with a car stuck in the air and a cylinder weeping badly enough that they could not safely lower it — and in that situation the priority is getting the vehicle down safely on the mechanical locks, not filing a form. The decision tree, condensed
If you do mostly exhaust, driveline, transmission, and suspension work: two-post, clear-floor if ceiling allows, asymmetric if you are in and out of the cabin, 10K minimum, full rise as tall as your building supports. If you split time between under-car work and long-term storage: consider a four-post with an open-center runway plus a rolling jack, accepting that fab work will be slightly less comfortable. If you have a low ceiling and only need wheels-free access: a mid-rise scissor is honest and inexpensive, but do not expect to stand under it. If you are lifting a tow rig as well as race cars, size to the tow rig.
Then, before you sign anything, verify three things: that the model carries current ALI certification, that the warranty terms are written down rather than described verbally, and that whoever sells it to you can service it. That last item is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters at 6 p.m. on a Friday when a lock will not release.
