We hear this constantly from farm shop owners around the Des Moines metro who call us after the slab is poured, the trusses are up, and the walls are closed in — only to find out the ceiling is six inches too short or the concrete won’t hold anchors under real load. We’ve walked enough of these jobs to know that the order you make decisions in matters just as much as the lift you pick. This checklist is built from actual site visits, not a spec sheet, and it’s meant to be used before you pour anything.

Step One: Nail Down Ceiling Height Before You Frame

The single most common mistake we see with a car lift for home garage installation is ceiling height that was decided before the lift was chosen. A typical 8,000-9,000 lb 4-post lift stands 11 to 12 feet tall fully raised, and you need clearance above that for the vehicle itself, plus a few inches of breathing room. If you’re planning a 3.5-car garage with a lift in one bay and storage above, framing at 10 feet leaves you stuck with a lift that can’t fully extend, which defeats the point of buying one.

We tell every rural shop owner the same thing: call us with your intended lift capacity before the trusses go up. If you want to store a truck or a project car on the top level and still work underneath it, you need real headroom — 11 to 12 feet minimum, more if you’re running a lifted pickup or a camper shell vehicle. Trusses, garage door tracks, and light fixtures all eat into that number too, so measure to the lowest obstruction, not just the roof deck. Getting this step wrong is expensive to fix after drywall; getting it right costs nothing but a phone call.

Step Two: Concrete Has to Match the Load, Not Just the Floor Plan

Standard residential concrete is usually 4 inches thick, and that’s fine for parking a car — it is not automatically fine for anchoring an 8,000-9,000 lb 4-post or 2-post lift. We’ve installed plenty of lifts on 4-inch slabs successfully, but it depends on the PSI rating, rebar or mesh reinforcement, and cure time. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for a car lift for home garage installation, we recommend 4.5 to 5 inches with rebar, poured at least 28 days before install so it’s fully cured.

If you’re doing serious wrenching — engine work, suspension jobs, anything involving leverage on the vehicle — we generally steer people toward a permanently anchored setup.

Step Four: Map Garage Access for Delivery

We’ve had customers assume the lift would ship in one small box; in reality, the columns, ramps, and hydraulic components arrive disassembled but still bulky. If your garage door is standard height and width, that’s usually fine, but if you’ve got a gravel driveway, a steep slope, or tight gate clearance, tell us in advance.

Some jobs need a forklift or skid loader to move heavy sections into position, especially on rural properties without a paved driveway. If you don’t have that equipment, we can bring it, but we need to know ahead of time so we show up with the right crew and machinery instead of discovering the problem on install day. This is a small planning step that saves hours of delay.

Step Five: Pick a Use Case, Then Pick a Capacity

Oil changes and fluid service don’t require the same lift as full engine swaps or heavy fabrication work. If your primary use is maintenance — oil, brakes, tires, undercarriage inspection — a 7,000-9,000 lb lift covers the vast majority of passenger vehicles and light trucks with room to spare. Farm shop owners sometimes assume they need maximum capacity because they occasionally haul something heavy, but most of the time that’s overkill that costs more without adding real value.

Think about what you’re actually doing week to week. If you want to store one vehicle on the lift and park another underneath — a common ask we get from home garage builders — that changes the ideal configuration too, since you need enough vertical clearance for the vehicle underneath plus the one raised above it. Be honest about your real use case before you lock in a capacity number.

Step Six: Sequence the Build Around the Lift, Not After It
