Why Slab Thickness Is the First Question We Ask

Before we talk brands, weight capacity, or arm style, we ask about the concrete. A car lift for house use puts enormous point-loads through four small anchor bolt patterns, not evenly across the floor like a parked vehicle does. Most two-post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound range want a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete, poured correctly with adequate cure time, and ideally reinforced. Anything thinner, cracked, or poured over old fill dirt is a liability, no matter how nice the lift is.

On the Ames job, the homeowner’s garage had been poured five years earlier as a standard 4-inch slab without rebar, which is typical for a house that was never designed with a lift in mind. We cored a test area, confirmed thickness and condition, and verified there weren’t hidden cracks radiating from the columns before we bolted anything down. Concrete under 3.5 inches, or concrete with visible spalling near where the posts would sit, gets a hard no from us until it’s patched or replaced. Rebar doesn’t make thin concrete strong enough on its own, but it changes how the slab behaves under load once it’s properly cured. A reinforced 4-inch or 5-inch pour resists the kind of hairline cracking that eventually loosens wedge anchors over years of use. When we get calls from people building new, like a lead we worked with who was framing a garage from scratch specifically to house a BendPak-style storage lift, we always push them to add rebar and go at least 4 inches, ideally 5, especially if there’s any chance they’ll upgrade to a heavier lift down the road.

If you’re pouring new for a car lift for house use, tell your concrete contractor up front what’s going on top of it. It changes the mix design and the reinforcement schedule, and it’s far cheaper to plan for it now than to jackhammer and repour later.

Ceiling Height and Door Clearance Matter Just as Much

We’ve had residential installs where the customer needed us to bring a forklift because the columns were too heavy to muscle through a standard door opening by hand. Anchoring itself takes hours, not minutes, because we’re drilling, cleaning, torquing, and re-checking bolt patterns to spec, not just setting posts and walking away.

Every anchor bolt is only as good as the hole it’s set in. We use manufacturer torque specs and verify with a calibrated wrench, because an under-torqued anchor looks fine until the day it isn’t.

Mechanical vs Hydraulic for a House Garage

Some of our home garage customers care more about upfront cost than convenience, and that’s a legitimate priority. A mechanical two-post lift is generally less expensive than a hydraulic model and has fewer components to maintain, which appeals to owners who want something economical and low-maintenance for occasional oil pan and brake work rather than daily shop use.
