Choosing a car lift for house alignment work is a different problem than choosing one for oil changes, because alignment demands a rigid, level platform and a set of arm restraints and safety cams that engage predictably every time. What arm restraints actually do

An arm restraint is the small toothed collar and pin at the base of each of a two-post lift’s four swing arms. When you swing an arm into position under a pickup point on a vehicle, the restraint engages and locks the arm at that angle so it cannot rotate outward under load. For a car lift for house alignment work the restraint doing its job is the difference between an accurate toe reading and a vehicle that shifts a quarter inch through the sweep.

The two common restraint styles are gear-and-pin (a serrated collar with a spring-loaded pin) and slotted-plate (a stamped plate with fixed radial slots). Gear-and-pin has finer angular resolution — usually about ten degrees per click — while slotted-plate is coarser but tolerates dirt better. For alignment work we prefer gear-and-pin because it lets you set the pickup point closer to the factory jacking location without splitting the difference between two coarse detents.

Safety-cam engagement and click interval

The safety-cam is the mechanical lock that keeps a car lift for house from lowering if a hydraulic hose fails. On a two-post that means a set of pins that ratchet up as the carriage rises and drop into notches in the mast. Common engagement heights range from about twenty-two inches at first click up to seventy inches at full lift, with intervals of three to four inches between clicks.

For alignment work you want a click at the working height you actually use most — usually forty to fifty inches for wheels-off, forty-eight to fifty-four inches for wheels-on plates. On the western Illinois installs we do for dealership service managers doing alignment on the side, we frequently swap the factory notch pattern for a fine-toothed replacement mast so we can find a click within an inch of the operator’s preferred height. A car lift for house alignment bay should absolutely lock at a working height every time.

Real dimensions to plan around

The dimensions we quote most often for a car lift for house alignment install are drive-thru clearance and overall width. A standard symmetric two-post gives you about ninety-eight inches of drive-thru clearance between the columns and about one hundred thirty-two inches of overall width from column base plate to base plate. Asymmetric two-posts are slightly narrower drive-thru but offset the load rearward for door clearance.

Rise height matters for alignment too. Most home two-posts rise to about seventy-two inches from slab to lifted pad, giving a working underside height of about seventy-eight inches when a typical passenger vehicle is on the pads. Add a set of stackable pad extensions if you have a lifted truck. For four-post alignment we plan to at least sixty-six inches rise so you can walk under the runway with a bar and dial gauges without ducking.

Rise heights that matter for alignment

Alignment work happens at three lift heights: wheels-on flat for the initial reading, wheels-free at mid-rise for suspension freedom, and full-rise for the tech’s back. A car lift for house alignment tool has to support all three cleanly. Wheels-on flat means the runways or plates read level under load — most manufacturers spec plus or minus one-tenth of an inch across the pair, and we set to that with shims at install.

Wheels-free requires a bridge jack that lifts the wheels off the runway a full inch or two, and a set of turntables that free the front wheels for the caster sweep. Full-rise gives back relief but has to still be measured for level; we check with a machinist’s level after every install. If any of these three heights are wrong, alignment readings drift, and you will chase your own tail through a whole afternoon.

Slotted-arm vs geared restraints in practice

For a car lift for house that will see both alignment work and general maintenance, we lean geared over slotted every time. Slotted restraints have coarser resolution and tend to walk if the arm angle is between slots — the arm feels locked but drifts a fraction of a degree as the vehicle settles. That fraction can absolutely show up on your alignment console as a shifting toe reading.

Geared restraints hold cleanly regardless of the exact angle, and modern versions have a spring detent stiff enough to survive a decade of daily use without wear. Torque specs and inspection cadence

Every arm restraint bolt, every safety-cam pin, and every anchor on a car lift for house install has a documented torque spec that we hit on the first install and re-check at ninety days. Column anchors on a typical two-post spec around 150 foot-pounds; arm restraint hardware is usually 60 to 75 foot-pounds. We tag every lift we install with the torque values in a sticker on the driver-side column so you can spot-check them later.

Inspection cadence for a home shop doing alignment work should be quarterly, not annual. That is more than the ALI minimum but appropriate for the load cycles alignment work adds. We come out annually, but we teach you the quarterly self-check: torque anchors, function the safeties three times, look at each cable, check the fluid level. Twenty minutes, four times a year, keeps a home lift honest.

Choosing between commercial and residential frames

For a western Illinois dealership service manager who wants a car lift for house alignment work, we usually steer toward a commercial-duty frame rather than the value-priced residential line. The frame difference is real: heavier gauge steel, better safety-cam machining, and finer arm restraint resolution. On a lift you may operate ten times a week the difference shows up in year eight, not year one, and by then the residential frame is due for replacement.

Commercial frames from Rotary or Challenger cost more up front, but the calculated cost per lift cycle over twenty years is often lower than the residential unit that you replace at year twelve.
