A mobile mechanic working out of Council Bluffs called us in the middle of a rough winter and said he was done crawling around on gravel driveways — he’d leased a small shop building and wanted a car lift in it before spring. His work had drifted over the years from roadside repair into restoration and metal work: patch panels, floor pans, rocker replacement, frame rust on cars people actually cared about. That kind of work is impossible on jack stands and miserable on creepers. This is the story of what we specified, why we specified it, what we found when we got to the building, and what it cost him in time and money to end up with equipment he trusts.

The Situation: Going From Truck-Based to Bricks-and-Mortar

Mobile mechanics who transition into a shop almost always underestimate one thing and overestimate another. They underestimate how much the equipment changes what work they can take in, and they overestimate how much building they need. This guy had been quoting rust repair for years and turning most of it down because he couldn’t get underneath a car safely on a customer’s driveway. He’d been running a floor jack, stands, and a lot of optimism. Once he had a rack, he could quote a full rocker and floor pan job with real confidence about hours.

His building was modest — roughly 30 by 40 with a 12-foot sidewall, similar to a lot of pole buildings we work in across western Iowa. He assumed that was too small for anything serious. It isn’t. That footprint comfortably holds a two-post with room to walk around it, a welding area, and a bench. The constraint wasn’t square footage, it was ceiling height and slab quality, which is nearly always the real answer. We asked him for three numbers before we quoted anything: lowest overhead obstruction, slab thickness, and door opening height. He didn’t know the slab thickness, which is normal, and finding out changed the whole plan. More on that below, because it’s the part most buyers skip.

Why Restoration and Metal Work Change the Spec

General repair and restoration work put very different demands on the same machine. In general repair, a vehicle goes up, someone pulls a wheel or drops a pan, and it comes down within a couple hours. In restoration, that car might live in the air for three weeks while somebody cuts rusted metal out of the floor and welds new steel in. That means the equipment is holding a static load for extended periods, sitting on its mechanical safeties, and getting hit with grinding sparks, weld spatter, and metal dust the entire time.

Practically, that pushed us toward a few things. A two-post rather than a four-post, because he needed the underside completely open — no runways in the way of a floor pan. Screw-pad adapters and a good set of stackable blocks, because a rusty unibody needs contact at the factory lift points and sometimes needs a little creativity when those points are the thing you’re replacing. Powder-coated columns rather than bare steel, because spatter and grinding dust are corrosive over time. And a strong preference for hydraulic hoses routed away from the work zone, with sleeving where they cross anything sharp. We also told him plainly: use jack stands or cribbing under the vehicle during heavy hammering and prying. Not because the equipment can’t hold it — because when you’re putting a body hammer and a slide hammer into a shell for hours, you don’t want lateral force living entirely in the arms.

What ALI Gold Certification Meant for This Install

He asked, reasonably, whether the certification was worth paying for on a one-man shop. Here’s how we answered it. ALI Gold certification means an independent lab tested that exact model against the ANSI/ALI standard — structural capacity, overload, safety-device function, load holding, and manual quality — and that the manufacturing plant is subject to ongoing audits. It is not self-declared. Any manufacturer can print “meets or exceeds standards” on a box. Only certified models appear in ALI’s directory.

For a one-man restoration shop, three things follow from that. First, insurance. When he called his carrier to add the building and equipment, the first question was whether the lift was certified — that answer affects the premium and, more importantly, affects whether a claim gets paid if something goes sideways. Second, customer confidence. He’s storing other people’s project cars in the air for weeks. If a client walks in and sees a certification label on a known brand, that’s a conversation he never has to have. Third, and this is the practical one: certified models from real manufacturers have real parts support. Cables, cylinders, lock ladders, arm pins — all available. We’ve been called out to uncertified imports where the only path forward was fabricating a part or scrapping the unit. That’s the difference in a nutshell.

The Concrete Problem We Found on Site

We core-drilled two test holes before install day, which we do on any building where nobody has documentation. The slab came back at just under four inches in the area where he wanted the columns, over a base that had settled unevenly on the north side. That’s not adequate. A two-post at 10,000 lb capacity puts significant tension and shear into the anchors, and thin or cracked concrete is the failure mode that actually kills people — not the steel, not the cables, the anchors pulling out of a bad pour.

The fix was straightforward but it wasn’t free. We saw-cut two footing pads, dug out the base, compacted it properly, and poured reinforced footings at the required thickness and PSI, then waited for a proper cure before setting anchors. It added about ten days and a mid-four-figure line item to a project he’d budgeted purely for equipment. He wasn’t thrilled, and I don’t blame him. But this is the single most common thing we find in older Iowa pole buildings and converted farm shops, and it’s the one thing you cannot shortcut. If you’re planning a shop build from scratch, tell your concrete contractor where the lift is going before the pour and specify the footing then — it costs almost nothing at that stage. Installation Day and What It Actually Involves

The install itself took a crew most of a day. Columns get set, plumbed in two planes, and shimmed with steel shims — never washers, never wood. Anchors go in at spec hole depth with a cleaned hole and get torqued with a calibrated wrench, then re-torqued. Equalization cables get routed, tensioned, and adjusted until both carriages ride within tolerance of each other. Then the power unit, the hydraulic lines, the electrical connection, and the overhead shutoff bar.

Then testing, which is the part people watch impatiently and shouldn’t. We cycle the empty unit through full travel several times, purging air out of the hydraulics. We verify the safety locks engage on both columns at every rung, and we listen for them landing together. We run it loaded, check for drift over a hold period, and check every fitting for weep. We set the arm restraints and confirm they engage. Finally we walk the owner through daily and monthly checks, leave the manual in the bay, and put the inspection tag on. He asked how often it needed attention. Our answer: look at it daily — cables, hoses, pads, locks — and get a documented annual inspection. We came back at 30 days to re-torque anchors and re-tension cables after break-in, which is standard on every install we do and something a lot of buyers never hear about.

Choosing a Car Lift When You’re a One-Person Operation

The advice for a solo operator is different from the advice for a five-bay shop. You’re not optimizing for throughput, you’re optimizing for versatility and for not being stranded. Capacity: 10,000 lb covers essentially every passenger vehicle, light truck, and classic body-on-frame car you’ll see, with margin. Going higher costs you door clearance and floor space for almost no practical benefit unless you’re taking in three-quarter-tons regularly.

Style: for restoration, a two-post wins. If you also want to store a car overhead and park another underneath, a four-post is the answer, and some shops eventually run one of each — the four-post for storage and alignment-style work, the two-post for wrenching. Brand: stick with names that will still stock parts in a decade. Budget: expect the equipment to be roughly two-thirds of your total and installation plus any concrete work to be the rest. Finance options exist and are worth asking about — a lot of new shops spread the cost over the first year while the added work pays for it. One Year Later: What He’d Do Differently

We checked in with him after a full year. The short version: the equipment changed his business more than he expected. Rust repair and floor pan work went from something he declined to something that fills his schedule, and his average job value went up substantially because those are multi-day jobs with real margin. He runs the machine daily and has had zero issues beyond a hydraulic fitting that needed a quarter turn.

What he’d change: he’d have poured the footings correctly when he took the building, not after. He’d have bought the taller adapter set and the rolling air jack up front instead of buying them piecemeal six months in. And he’d have installed a second, smaller unit — a mid-rise scissor — for quick brake and tire work, so his main rack isn’t tied up for three weeks while a project car sits on it. That last one is the most common regret we hear from restoration shops. If you plan to keep long-term projects in the air, plan for a second position from day one, even if you can’t afford it yet — leave the space and the electrical for it. Everything else he’d do the same, including insisting on a certified machine from a brand with parts behind it. That decision looks smarter every year it keeps working.
