If you farm along the Iowa-Missouri border and you are shopping for a car lift so you can quit crawling under the pickup on a creeper in January, the most important thing you can do before you spend a dollar is read the warranty. We install and service lifts across southern Iowa and northern Missouri every week, and the calls that go badly are almost never about the hardware failing. They go badly because nobody knew what the coverage actually said, who was supposed to file the claim, or whether labor was included. Oil changes, filter swaps, gear lube on the loader tractor, brake jobs on the grain truck — that is light-duty work, and a properly matched setup will outlive you. Start With What the Warranty Paper Actually Says

Every manufacturer publishes a warranty, and no two read the same. Rotary and Challenger, the two commercial brands we lean on hardest, typically split coverage into tiers: structure gets the longest term, hydraulic and electrical components get a shorter one, and wear items like rubber pads, cable sheaves, and lock dogs get little or nothing. BendPak and Atlas, which we sell into home and farm shops constantly, follow a similar pattern with different numbers. The mistake we see is a buyer reading “limited lifetime” on a web page and assuming the whole machine is covered forever. It is the weldment that is covered forever. The power unit is not.

Before you buy, ask the seller for the actual warranty document as a PDF and read three lines: the term for structural components, the term for hydraulic and electrical parts, and whether labor is included. A farmer near Lamoni called us two winters ago after a power unit quit on a five-year-old drive-on. The pump was covered. The four hours of drive time and diagnostic labor were not, because his coverage was parts-only. That is not a scandal — it is the industry standard — but he would have budgeted differently if he had known. Write those three terms on a sticky note and put it in the folder with your manual. That single sheet of paper has saved our customers more money than any accessory we sell.

Parts-Only vs. Parts-and-Labor: The Distance Problem

Out on the border counties, labor coverage matters more than it does in Des Moines, and the reason is mileage. If you are ninety minutes from the nearest qualified service tech, a parts-only warranty means the free pump comes with a bill for the trip. We are honest about this with every rural customer: the drive is real, the truck is real, and somebody pays for it. When you compare two machines and one includes labor for the first year or two, that inclusion can be worth more than a difference in sticker price.

There is a second wrinkle. Some manufacturers will authorize a local service company to perform warranty work at a set reimbursement rate that does not cover rural travel. When that happens, the shop either eats the difference or bills you the gap. We tell people up front which brands reimburse fairly and which do not, because we are the ones who have to make that phone call. Ask your supplier point blank: if this fails in year two, who comes out, and what is my out-of-pocket? If the answer is vague, that is your answer. A good supplier can name the process, the phone tree, and the typical turnaround in one breath. This is also why we push farm customers toward brands we actually stock parts for — a covered part that ships in three weeks is functionally an uncovered part when the loader tractor needs oil this weekend.

Installation and How It Can Void Coverage

The fastest way to lose your warranty is to install the machine wrong, and the second fastest is to install it on the wrong concrete. Manufacturers specify minimum slab thickness and compressive strength — commonly four inches of 3,000 PSI for light-duty two-post applications, more for heavier capacities. Your 30×40 pole building may have a four-inch slab, or it may have three and a half inches with fiber mesh and no idea what the mix was. We core-test when there is doubt. If a lift is anchored into thin or weak concrete and the anchors pull, that is not a manufacturing defect and no claim is getting paid.

We have also seen coverage denied because a homeowner cut and extended the hydraulic lines to reach a different post location, or wired a 208-volt power unit to 240 without changing the motor tap. Both are understandable. Both are documented voids. A farm shop owner south of Corydon did his own install on a drive-on and it never sat level; he then found us by searching for lift repair, and by the time we arrived the runway had taken a set. We got it usable, but the manufacturer would not touch the claim. If you are handy enough to do the install, at least have the anchor torque and the leveling checked and documented by someone who does it for a living. That paperwork is what makes a claim go through.

Sizing a Car Lift for Oil Changes and Fluid Service

For oil and fluid work on passenger vehicles, three-quarter-ton pickups, and the occasional side-by-side, a 7,000 to 10,000 pound capacity covers nearly everything a farm shop touches. The choice is really between a drive-on four-post and a two-post asymmetric. For fluid service specifically, we lean two-post, because the runways on a four-post block your access to the drain plug and filter on some layouts and force you to work around the ramps. A two-post gives you a clean, open underside and full wheel access when you add a rolling jack.

That said, most farm buyers also want storage — park the summer car up top, work on the truck underneath — and that is a four-post job every time. When somebody tells us they want both, we ask which one they will do fifty times a year. If it is oil changes, buy the two-post and put a cheap set of jack stands in the corner for storage. If it is storage with oil changes twice a year, buy the drive-on and accept the ramp geometry. With 12-foot sidewalls you have room for either, though a two-post with a top overhead beam will eat about 12 feet of height and may push you to a floorplate model. We measure this with people before they order, because a returned freight shipment on a heavy machine is a painful lesson and the warranty does not cover regret.

How a Real Claim Workflow Goes

Here is what actually happens when something breaks. You call us with a symptom — it drifts down overnight, one column lags, the pump runs but nothing moves. We ask for the serial number off the data plate and a photo of it. That serial is everything; without it, the manufacturer will not open a file, and a surprising number of owners cannot find their plate because it got painted over or the previous owner removed the column cover. Take a photo of yours today and email it to yourself.

From there we diagnose, usually over the phone first because half of these are a bleed procedure, a slack cable, or a lock release solenoid. If it is a covered component, we file with the factory on your behalf, they issue a return authorization or ship a replacement, and we schedule the swap. Turnaround on stocked parts is typically a few days; on a specialty cylinder for an older or off-brand machine it can be weeks. We had an urgent call from out of state where a vehicle was stuck in the air on an unbranded 7,000 pound drive-on with a leaking cylinder, and the owner could not tell us the make or model. We got the car down safely, but there was no warranty path at all because there was no traceable manufacturer. Buy a brand with a paper trail. Maintenance Records Keep the Claim Alive

Warranty language almost always includes a clause requiring reasonable maintenance, and manufacturers do read the records when a claim is large. For a light-duty machine in a farm shop, reasonable maintenance is not complicated: check fluid level monthly, grease the cable sheaves and slider blocks per the manual, inspect cables for broken strands and corrosion, verify the lock mechanisms engage on every latch position, and torque-check the anchors annually. That is maybe twenty minutes, twice a year.

What kills claims is corrosion in an unheated building. Condensation cycles through a Missouri-border winter will rust cables from the inside out, and a frayed cable that snapped from neglect is not a defect. We recommend a light oil wipe on the cables each fall and, if you can, a small amount of heat in the shop so the slab does not sweat. Keep a page in the manual where you write the date and what you did. Two lines a year. When we file a claim and the factory asks whether the equipment was maintained, we photograph that page and the conversation ends. We have watched that single habit turn a denied claim into a covered one on a cable set that would otherwise have cost real money. It also gives you a resale story — a documented machine sells for meaningfully more, and around here these things change hands within the county.

The Pre-Purchase Checklist, Condensed

Print this and take it with you. One: get the warranty PDF and note the structural term, the hydraulic and electrical term, and whether labor is included. Two: confirm who performs warranty work in your area and what travel costs. Three: verify your slab thickness and strength against the spec sheet, and core-test if you are unsure. Four: confirm ceiling height against the model’s overall height, including the overhead beam. Five: match capacity to the heaviest thing you will actually raise, then add margin. Six: confirm the electrical supply matches the power unit as shipped.

Seven: ask whether the seller stocks wear parts — cables, pads, lock springs, seal kits — or whether every part is a factory special order. Eight: get the serial number and register the equipment the day it is commissioned, because unregistered warranties are the most common denial we see. Nine: keep a maintenance log. Ten: buy from someone who will answer the phone in year six, when the coverage is long gone and you just need a cylinder rebuilt. That last one is not on any spec sheet, and it is the one our customers along the border tell us mattered most.
