A restoration builder in northwest Iowa hired us last fall to install a car lift in a new metal shop he had put up specifically for a growing frame-off project queue. The build was going to be metal work, media blasting, and eventual paint — the kind of work that needs a vehicle up on a lift for weeks at a time while the fabricator moves around it. What made this install interesting was not the lift itself, which was a straightforward Rotary two-post, but the freight, unloading, and forklift logistics that had to line up on a rural site fifty miles from the nearest interstate. The Site Survey That Saved the Whole Job
Two weeks before the truck was scheduled, we drove up to the site for a free walkthrough. The customer had built a beautiful 40×60 pole building with fourteen-foot side walls and a full concrete slab, but the driveway curved around a grain bin with an overhead auger arm hanging at about twelve feet six inches. A standard 53-foot dry van with the doors open is close to fourteen feet tall at the roof line, and the auger would have taken the roof off the trailer. We caught it on the survey, worked with the driver to swing the trailer around the bin from a different angle, and avoided what would have been an ugly redelivery.
Site surveys are not something we charge for, and they save real money on rural installs. We look at the driveway grade, overhead obstructions, gate widths, and turnaround room. On a shop like this, the difference between a clean drop and a redelivery fee is a five-minute drive out from Ames. We would rather burn the gas than send a truck back.
Choosing the Freight Method
Not every car lift needs to ship the same way. For this northwest Iowa job, we quoted two freight options — a full-service white-glove delivery from the factory with a liftgate truck, or an LTL freight ship to our Ames warehouse followed by our own truck delivery. White-glove sounds nice but does not actually solve the unloading problem, because the liftgate cannot handle a crate that weighs over two thousand pounds. Our own truck delivery let us stage the crate, arrange forklift unloading, and time the install for the same day.
The customer chose the Ames-warehouse route, and we scheduled the truck for the morning of the install so the crate came off our flatbed straight onto the shop floor with a rented forklift. That saved staging space in his shop and eliminated one handling step. Handling steps are where lifts get scratched and hydraulic hoses get kinked, so fewer handling steps is always better. Renting the Right Forklift
A two-post car lift crate is long, heavy, and awkward. The columns are typically ten to twelve feet, the crossbar is separate, and the packaging box for the arms and small parts is a fifth of the total weight. A standard warehouse forklift with a 5,000 pound rating and forty-eight-inch forks is fine for the columns, but the boom reach matters if you need to lift into a pole building with limited turnaround. For this northwest Iowa job we rented a rough-terrain forklift from a Sioux City yard, drove it to the site the morning of install, and returned it that afternoon.
Renting the right forklift is not the place to save money. We have seen customers try to hand-cart a two-post crate off a trailer with a pallet jack and it ends badly — either the crate slides off the trailer edge, or the pallet jack tires deflate under the load. The rental fee for a proper rough-terrain unit is a small line item on a lift install, and we include it in our quote at cost. On a rural install where the truck cannot back into the building, a forklift is not optional.
Sequencing the Install Around the Delivery
Timing matters more than most customers realize. If the freight truck arrives at 9 a.m. and the install crew is not scheduled until 1 p.m., the crate is sitting outside your shop for four hours — in weather, in view of anyone driving by, and taking up your driveway. On this northwest Iowa install we scheduled the freight truck and the install crew to arrive within thirty minutes of each other. The columns came off the trailer and into the shop building without ever touching the ground.
Same-day sequencing also means the customer only clears their schedule once. Our crew unloaded, laid out the pieces, drilled and set the anchor bolts, plumbed the columns to specification, ran the hydraulic hoses, wired the power unit, and did a functional test with the customer standing there. He was working on his first restoration project on the lift the following morning. That is what a well-sequenced install looks like when the freight side is handled properly.
What Restoration Work Demands from a Lift
Restoration builders use a car lift differently from a service technician. A frame-off project sits on the lift for weeks. The vehicle may have no drivetrain, no wheels, and no consistent lifting points — a bare unibody with the floor pans cut out lifts nothing like a stock car. We spec pad adapters and stackable frame extensions for restoration customers so they can catch the lift points that survive the tear-down, not the ones the factory designed in.
Long project times also mean the lift will hold weight for weeks at a stretch, which is a stress test on the safety lock mechanism. We tell every restoration customer to set the lift onto the mechanical safeties from day one and never leave it on hydraulic pressure alone. A hydraulic system will drift over days; the mechanical safeties will not. For the northwest Iowa builder, we walked him through the safety-latch procedure the day of install and he has used it religiously since.
What We Would Do Differently on This Site
The one thing we would change on this install is the position of the electrical drop. The customer had run the 220V drop to what he thought was the ideal wall — near the shop door for easy access — but that put the power unit exhaust vent about four feet from the media-blasting station he built later. Blast media is abrasive; the power unit motor breathes it. Six months in, we came back and relocated the drop to the opposite corner, which cost the customer a small electrician bill he did not need to pay.
When we survey a restoration shop today, we specifically ask about media blasting, paint booths, and welding stations, because all three send airborne contaminants that can shorten the life of a power unit motor. Position the lift so the power unit vents away from those work areas, and cover the vent with a filter sock if the shop cannot fully separate them. Small choices at install time save real money over the twenty-year life of a car lift.
What This Install Cost Compared to the Rumor Number
Customers hear rumors online about what a car lift install costs, and the rumor is usually wrong in both directions. On this northwest Iowa job, the all-in cost for a Rotary two-post, freight to Ames, our truck delivery to the site, a full-day install, the anchor package, and the forklift rental was competitive with what the customer would have paid a low-tier online seller for the lift alone — before he ever hired anyone to install it.
