A collector in the Des Moines metro called us about a car lift in the middle of a frame-off project on a mid-sixties coupe, and the conversation started the way most of these do: he had the body on a rotisserie, the chassis on jack stands, and no safe way to get under either one for the hundreds of hours of welding and blasting still ahead. That is the exact moment most restoration guys stop tolerating creepers and cinder blocks. Why Restoration Work Changes the Buying Decision

Most people shopping for shop equipment think in terms of oil changes and brake jobs. Restoration is a different animal. You are not under a vehicle for twenty minutes; you are under it for six hours straight, running a grinder overhead, laying in floor pan patches, and letting sparks fall on everything below you. That changes what matters. Runway coverage matters, because on a stripped unibody there are almost no factory lift points left to trust. Access matters, because you need to swing a MIG gun and a die grinder without hitting a post. And duty cycle matters less than raw stability, because you are going up once and staying up.

For this customer we ended up recommending a four-post drive-on with a rolling bridge jack rather than the two-post he originally wanted. His reasoning for the two-post was wheels-free access, which is legitimate. Our reasoning against it was that a bare shell with cut rockers has nowhere safe for swing arms to land, and he also wanted to park a finished car on top of the machine when the project stalled for a season — which happens to every restoration ever attempted. The bridge jack gave him wheels-free when he needed it. The runways gave him a safe platform for a shell with no structure. That combination is the single most common recommendation we make to collectors in central Iowa, and it is almost never what they walked in asking for.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Means

ALI Gold certification is the label that separates equipment that has been third-party tested from equipment that just has a sticker printed at the factory. The Automotive Lift Institute runs the program, an independent lab validates the design against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, and the certification covers load capacity, overload behavior, structural integrity, and the safety devices that are supposed to catch the load when something fails. Certified models get a gold label with a serial number you can look up. Uncertified models get whatever the marketing department decided to claim, and we have pulled apart enough imported units to tell you the difference is not theoretical.

For a restoration shop the practical argument is simple. You are going to have a vehicle in the air, unattended, for weeks at a time. Certification is your assurance that the locks, the cables, and the welds were tested against a real standard by somebody with no financial interest in the outcome. Insurance carriers increasingly ask about it too, especially if you have anyone else in the building — a friend helping with wiring, a kid handing you tools. Our customer in the Des Moines metro did not care about ALI Gold when he called. He cared a great deal about it after we showed him photos of a failed cable on an uncertified unit that a homeowner in a neighboring county had bought online for what looked like an unbeatable price. Certification is cheap insurance on a machine that holds two tons over your chest.

Slab, Ceiling, and the Pre-Install Walkthrough

Before we quote anything we want to know three numbers: slab thickness, concrete strength, and clear ceiling height. Manufacturers publish minimums for a reason. A typical two-post wants four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at minimum, and most heavier configurations want more. Four-post units spread load across more anchor points, which gives you a little more margin, but margin is not permission — we still core-test or at least hammer-probe when the pour history is unknown. This customer had a newer pour in a pole building with a good base underneath, which made the conversation short.

Ceiling was the tighter constraint. He had roughly twelve-foot sidewalls with trusses above, which is a common central Iowa pole barn spec and workable for storage-height four-post models but marginal if you want a full-rise two-post plus a tall vehicle. We measured to the lowest obstruction, not the peak — that is the number that matters, and it is where people get burned buying online. Lights, garage door tracks, and radiant tube heaters all live in the exact space your load wants to occupy. We ended up relocating two light fixtures and a section of door track as part of the install, which took an extra ninety minutes and saved him from discovering the problem with a car halfway up. Install Day: What Actually Happens

Install on a four-post in a clean, empty bay runs most of a day for our two-person crew. The sequence is unglamorous: uncrate and inventory, lay out and square the columns to the runway spacing, set and shim the bases, drop the runways, route and tension the cables, plumb the power unit, wire it, then cycle the equipment empty a dozen times while checking lock engagement at every position. Squaring is where the time goes. If the columns are out by even a quarter inch across the diagonals, the cables will run unevenly and you will chase a level problem for the life of the machine.

Uneven rise is the single most common complaint we get from people who installed their own equipment, and we get those calls from all over — we had one from Indiana where a fellow found us searching for lift repair after his self-install would not level, and the fix was ultimately a cable tension and squaring correction that took us longer to diagnose remotely than it would have taken to do right the first time. On install day we also walk the owner through the daily routine: check the locks audibly, confirm all four are seated before you go under, never rely on hydraulic pressure alone, and keep the runway approach ramps clear. Then we load his heaviest vehicle, run it to full height, and let it sit while we finish paperwork. That first loaded cycle in front of the owner is the part that builds confidence, and we never skip it.

Living With a Car Lift Through an Iowa Winter

An unheated or intermittently heated pole building in Iowa is a hard environment for hydraulics. Cold oil is thick oil, and thick oil means slow rise, noisy pumps, and higher relief pressure on startup. Our advice to this customer, and to every collector we work with north of Interstate 80, is to run a hydraulic fluid rated for the temperature swing you actually see, and to cycle the machine empty a couple of times before you put weight on it on a ten-degree morning. That single habit prevents most cold-weather complaints we field between December and March.

The other winter issue is moisture. Vehicles come in wet with road salt, that brine drips onto runways and pools around column bases, and by spring you have surface rust exactly where you least want it. We told him to wipe the runways down after any salt-season drive-on and to keep an eye on cable ends and sheave pins, since that is where corrosion turns into a real problem rather than a cosmetic one. He also learned something we did not have to teach him: with a project car stored up top all winter, the fuel, battery, and tires need attention in a way they would not on a floor-parked vehicle. Storage is a genuine advantage in a small shop, but a vehicle in the air is a vehicle you are not walking past every day. Set a reminder to look at it. The First Service Call and What It Cost

His first service call came at month eleven, and it was not a failure — it was a preventive visit he scheduled himself after noticing the machine sat about a half inch lower on one corner than it had when new. That is normal cable stretch on a new unit. New cables seat and elongate slightly over the first year of duty, and every four-post we install gets a re-tension recommendation somewhere in that first-year window. We adjusted all four, inspected the sheaves and lock ladders, changed the hydraulic fluid, checked anchor torque, and cycled it loaded. Two hours on site.

Cost on a visit like that lands in the low hundreds for most central Iowa customers, and it is the cheapest money you will spend on the equipment. Compare that to what a neglected setup turns into. We got a panicked call out of Florida once from an owner with a vehicle stuck in the air on a seven-thousand-pound four-post, cylinder leaking, no idea what brand the machine even was because the previous owner had painted over the data plate. That customer’s problem was not that the cylinder failed. It was that nobody had ever looked at it, and he had no documentation, no serial number, and no parts source. Keep your manual. What We Would Tell the Next Collector

A year in, this customer’s summary was that he wished he had done it two projects earlier. That is the near-universal response, and it is not just about comfort. He estimated the equipment cut his time on floor pan and rocker work roughly in half, because he was no longer crawling out from under the car every ten minutes to reposition. Welding overhead from a rolling stool at chest height instead of flat on your back with sparks in your ear is a different job. The quality of the metal work went up because the access went up.
