Why Storage Restorers Buy A Different Car Lift Than Everyone Else
A production commercial shop optimizes a car lift for speed — how fast can a tech raise, work, and lower a car in a five-minute rotation. A restoration shop optimizes for something almost opposite. You need a stable overhead platform that can hold a valuable car for six months without drifting, without leaking a slow puddle onto the paint below, and without asking anyone to think about it every day. That is not the same equipment. Storage restorers buy for the two years the car sits, not the two hours a week they work under it.
The practical version of that is a four-post platform with a mechanical latching lock system on every column, storage-rated cables, and enough runway length to fit a long-body project without the front bumper hanging off the platform. Restorers who try to store a client Camaro on a two-post for a winter learn quickly why the four-post is worth its extra footprint. Two-posts want tension on the arms; storage wants tension on nobody.
Four-Post Wide vs Two-Post: A Straight Framework
The decision tree starts with a simple question. Are you working under the car more than you store it, or storing it more than you work? If you are storing more than working, four-post. If you are working more than storing, and storage is only a nice-to-have, a heavy-duty two-post with a good drive-on tray attachment can still do the job — but honestly, most restoration owners we talk to end up regretting the two-post choice for storage inside the first year.
Four-post wide models earn their name in a restoration bay because vintage door swings are enormous compared to modern cars. If you are dropping a client’s 1965 Lincoln Continental onto a standard four-post, the suicide doors clip the columns. Wide models solve that at the cost of some square footage. We measure door swing on the largest car you plan to store before writing the quote, because that measurement drives the model choice more than capacity does at these vehicle weights. Capacity Sizing For Project Cars And The Rare Heavy
Most restoration project cars fall well under 5,000 lb curb weight. A muscle car with an iron block and a heavy transmission sneaks up on 4,500 lb, but that is still a long way from a car lift’s 9,000 or 12,000 lb rated capacity. The reason we push restorers toward 9,000 lb rather than a 7,000 lb entry-tier is not the daily project car — it is the rare heavy. The client who calls in October about storing a diesel-swap Suburban for the winter is why you buy nine, not seven.
Rated capacity is not the same as continuous storage load either. Any storage lift should hold a car well below its rated capacity, on mechanical locks, with the cables slack. That is how you keep hydraulic seals healthy for a decade. Choose a car lift that leaves comfortable headroom on the capacity number and you will not resent the choice ten years in, especially when a customer surprises you with a heavier vehicle in year three.
Arm Restraints And Safety-Cam Engagement You Cannot Compromise On
On a restoration two-post, arm restraints are the single feature that separates a car lift you can trust with a client’s Ferrari from one that lives in your nightmares. The restraint locks the arm rotation when the pad is under load and prevents the arm from creeping off a pinch weld. Cheap lifts use a spring-loaded pin that can wear or bypass. Better lifts use a gear-tooth engagement that physically cannot back off under load. Ask for the gear-tooth design.
Safety-cam engagement is the four-post equivalent that matters even more for storage. When you raise the platform, mechanical latches drop into notched columns at defined heights. The hydraulic cylinder should be doing zero work once you park the car for storage — every ounce of load should be on those cams. On install day we cycle the lift up and down five or six times specifically to prove that every cam on every column drops cleanly and holds. If one cam is sluggish, we fix it before we leave the shop.
Ceiling Height, Column Spacing, and Storage Geometry
Restoration shops are often in older buildings, and older buildings have surprising ceiling geometry. Trusses drop, HVAC runs low, and the sprinkler head is always exactly where the roof of the stored car wants to be. Walk your ceiling before you order. Measure not just the peak but the clearance directly above where the stored car will sit at full height, and add three feet for the vehicle plus working headroom underneath.
Column spacing matters for entry and exit, especially with a long project car. Our default is to place the four-post columns so the vehicle can drive on and drive off — a drive-on installation makes seasonal turnover a ten-minute swap instead of a thirty-minute wrestle. If your bay geometry forces a drive-on-only-one-direction layout, that changes how you sequence storage during the winter. Plan the geometry before the concrete truck ever pours.
The Eastern Nebraska Install Reality
We drive west into eastern Nebraska regularly for restoration installs — Omaha, Lincoln, out to Fremont and Norfolk. The freight economics from a coastal manufacturer to a Nebraska shop are worse than they are to an Iowa shop, which is one reason regional installers like ours end up cheaper on the total number even though the equipment price is identical. We consolidate loads on our own trucks, uncrate on-site, and handle the anchoring and startup ourselves rather than subcontracting.
The other Nebraska-specific reality is winter install scheduling. If you want a lift installed before storage season, we book six weeks out in a normal year and longer if the fall is busy. Call in July for an October install. Waiting until September and hoping is how a client car ends up sitting on the shop floor through December while you wait on freight and an install date that no longer fits your calendar.
